Birth:

Mentioned in Matthew and Luke only –

Matthew tells the story of the Magi coming to see Jesus.
Matthew 2:9-12 “After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them
until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw
the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with
gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country
by another route.”
Luke tells the story of the shepherds coming to see Jesus.
Luke 2:8-12, 16-20 “And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of
the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not
be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you;
he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." So they hurried off
and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning
what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up
all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard
and seen, which were just as they had been told”

What is the take-away?

Both Magi and shepherds came to see the Messiah and found Him in a manger. These two Gospels tell different perspectives of the
same event – one focuses on Magi from the East, the other focuses on local shepherds. Both groups came to see the newborn King.
