CERTIFICATION
Aggregate Testing Technician
Fine and coarse aggregate comprise 60 to 75% of a concrete
mixture. Because the aggregates occupy such a large percentage
of the volume of a concrete mixture, and can dramatically influence
the properties of the concrete in both a plastic and hardened state,
it is important that the aggregate be sampled and tested properly
to ensure it is appropriate for use in the designed mixture. At the
request of State Departments of Transportation, and with their
assistance, ACI has launched a national certification program to
address the need for personnel adept at conducting acceptance
tests on aggregates and soils in both the field and laboratory.

Tilt-Up Supervisor
The tilt-up concrete construction industry has enjoyed
unprecedented growth in recent years. What was once a specialty
form of construction used primarily for one-story plain facilities is
now used in a wider variety of applications and locations. Effective
and efficient tilt-up construction relies heavily on planning,
scheduling, and the orchestrated movement of many types of
equipment, tools, and personnel. ACI, with the expertise and
assistance of the Tilt-Up Concrete Association, has developed a
national program to certify individuals who are proficient at
coordinating the elements of tilt-up construction projects.

Roller-compacted concrete (RCC) is an accepted and
economical method for construction dams and pavements.
Achieving adequate compaction is essential in the development
of the desired properties in the hardened material. The compaction
depends on many variables, including the materials used, mixture
proportions, mixing and transporting methods, discharge and
spreading practices, compaction equipment and procedures, and
lift thickness. The best performance characteristics are obtained
when the concrete is reasonably free of segregation, well-bonded
at construction joints, and compacted at, or close to, maximum
density. RCC offers a rapid and economical method of construction
where compaction practices and equipment are a major
consideration in both design and construction.

Concrete mixed, transported, and placed under conditions of
high temperature, low humidity, or high wind requires an
understanding of the effects such environmental factors have on
concrete properties and construction operations. When these factors
are understood, measures can be taken to eliminate or minimize
undesirable effects. The most serious difficulties are experienced in
weather and types of construction that are unusual in the experience
of those performing the work. This report defines hot weather, lists
possible unfavorable effects, and presents practices intended to
minimize them. A selected bibliography is appended.

Fast-track concrete paving helps contractors improve profits
with time-of-completion incentives. It also helps public agencies
combat increasing public impatience with traffic interruptions during
pavement repair or replacement. But successful use of this powerful
technology requires agencies and contractors to change traditional
construction specifications and processes.
Accelerated Techniques for Concrete Paving describes the
needed changes and also applications for roadways, airfields,
and other pavements. Youll get recommendations for planning,
concrete materials and properties, jointing and joint sealing, curing
and temperature control, concrete strength testing, and opening
the pavement to traffic. An appendix gives flexural strength
requirements for opening to traffic. These requirements vary with
pavement class (municipal or highway), foundation support value,
and expected loading, expressed as equivalent single-axle loads.
With the new accelerated techniques, concrete pavements can
be opened to traffic in 12 to 48 hours, while traditional techniques
require waits of 5 to 14 days. This fast-track approach allows
transportation officials to complete projects that under normal time
frames would simply not be feasible.

Dispersant of polymers and water have been in use for many
years as admixtures to portland cement mortar and concrete. These
dispersants are commonly called latexes. The proper ty
improvements from this family of admixtures includes increased
bond strength, reduced permeability, increased resistance to
freezing and thawing, and increased flexural strength. Applications
of these materials include tile adhesive and grout, floor leveling,
concrete patching, and bridge deck overlays.

Equations for both the spectral response method and the
equivalent static load method are systematically presented and
several additional design examples for computing the base shear
force, confinement, probable moments, and a full shear-wall
design example for a high-rise building are included.
In addition to the prolific number of analysis and design
examples in the book, there are numerous flow charts and
extensive design tables. Other significant features are the
inclusion of examples in SI Units in most of the chapters and a
listing of the relevant equations in SI format. This book will serve
as a valuable guideline to the practicing engineer who has to
keep abreast of the state of the art in concrete structural design
and material behavior as mandated by the latest codes, as well
as the designer who is interested in a concise treatment of the
fundamentals.

Repair, Protection and Waterproofing of
Concrete Structures
By: P.H. Perkins, 1997, 233 pp.
Order Code: RPWCS.CT02
$95.00
Investigation, diagnosis, and subsequent specifications for
repair work are quite different from the steps taken in designing
new structures. Thus the need for information related specifically
to repair. This thoroughly revised and updated edition deals mainly
with reinforced-concrete repairs intended to restore long-term
durability and prolong the useful life of a structure. Such repairs
typically wont increase structural load-carrying capacity to any
significant degree. But one of the first and most important steps in
investigating a deteriorated structure is a decision on whether
structural strengthening is required, and, if so, whether the result
will be cost effective. This must be done by an engineer with
considerable experience in reinforced concrete investigation and
repair. Chapter 4 covers detailed inspection sampling, and testing.
Other chapters include information on:
Basic characteristics of concrete, mortar, and other
building materials;
Factors affecting reinforced-concrete durability;
Nonstructural reinforced-concrete repairs;
Structural reinforced-concrete repairs;
Coatings for reinforced concrete;
Concrete floor and roof repair; and
Repairs of liquid-retaining, water-excluding, and
marine structures.
The concrete repair market has grown dramatically in recent
years, and so has the need for reliable repair guidance for
engineers, contractors, and owners. This book gives you the
needed guidance.

This edition covers everything the home builder needs to know
about high-quality concreting. While not a training manual, the
book describes the basic techniques and provides guidelines
for ordering ready-mixed concrete; working with admixtures (such
as accelerators, retarders, water reducers, and high-range water
reducers); forming; jointing; curing; and controlling basement
leakage.
Special attention is given to new developments in finishing
walls, expansion joints, and bending and lapping rebars. A list of
sources for additional information and a glossary of basic concrete
terminology have been expanded.
