FOREWORD
The Jonathan P. Rosen Collection of 770 early Greek coins brings to this series an un-
usual concentration on the beginnings of coinage, and on pieces of great rarity many of
which remain iinattributed. While the collection contains denominations from all over
the ancient Greek world, the assemblage of small fractions is especially impressive. It is
hoped that the present compilation will become a useful source of reference for others
The basic format follows that of the Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum fascicules, differing
only in that it allows for dates, however general in many instances, and for greater discus-
sion of a given series, where this is deemed desirable. The catalogue is followed by five
indices: geographical; rulers, dynasts and tribes; obverse types; reverse types; and symbols.
In each section, references include relevant bibliography as well as individual mint studies,
where the latter exist. Previous publication of the coins is indicated, when known, al-
though no exhaustive search for the pedigree of each one has been attempted. The metal
is silver unless otherwise noted, and the weights are given in grams. Weights and die
positions have been supplied by Silvie Pey. The smallest fractions are immediately ac-
Robert J. Myers.
Sincere thanks are extended to several colleagues for their suggestions and criticisms.
Silvia Hurter and Margaret Thompson reviewed the collection in general. Others provided
invaluable assistance with regard to specific sections: Andreas Furtwangler for Massalia;
Denyse Berend for the Segesta bronzes; Herbert Cahn for the uncertain of Asia Minor;
Friedrich Bodenstedt for the electrum of Cyzicus and Phocaea; and Otto Morkholm for
the coins of Lycia. In the end, the author alone is responsible for any errors that remain.
