ANCIENT COINS IN NORTH AMERICAN COLLECTIONS

No. 5

,1

FOREWORD

The Jonathan P. Rosen Collection of 770 early Greek coins brings to this series an un-

usual concentration on the beginnings of coinage, and on pieces of great rarity many of

which remain iinattributed. While the collection contains denominations from all over

the ancient Greek world, the assemblage of small fractions is especially impressive. It is

hoped that the present compilation will become a useful source of reference for others

interested in the same period of coinage.

The basic format follows that of the Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum fascicules, differing

only in that it allows for dates, however general in many instances, and for greater discus-

sion of a given series, where this is deemed desirable. The catalogue is followed by five

indices: geographical; rulers, dynasts and tribes; obverse types; reverse types; and symbols.

In each section, references include relevant bibliography as well as individual mint studies,

where the latter exist. Previous publication of the coins is indicated, when known, al-

though no exhaustive search for the pedigree of each one has been attempted. The metal

is silver unless otherwise noted, and the weights are given in grams. Weights and die

positions have been supplied by Silvie Pey. The smallest fractions are immediately ac-

companied by their enlargements on a scale of 2 : 1. The photography is the work of

Robert J. Myers.

Sincere thanks are extended to several colleagues for their suggestions and criticisms.

Silvia Hurter and Margaret Thompson reviewed the collection in general. Others provided

invaluable assistance with regard to specific sections: Andreas Furtwangler for Massalia;

Denyse Berend for the Segesta bronzes; Herbert Cahn for the uncertain of Asia Minor;

Friedrich Bodenstedt for the electrum of Cyzicus and Phocaea; and Otto Morkholm for

the coins of Lycia. In the end, the author alone is responsible for any errors that remain.

The coin is related to those issued

jointly by "Siris" and Pyxus,

which carry the Pyxus ethnic

on the reverse. While the latter

are not common, coins with the

name of Sirinos alone are extrem-

ely rare. Two examples appeared

in the Sambon-Canessa Sale, 7

May 1903 (Maddalena), 400, 401.

One examiner of this specimen

believes there may be traces of

the Pyxus legend on the reverse.

Examination under the micros-

cope at the ANS, however, has

not revealed traces of an inscrip-

tion or of tampering with the die.

Until recently, the obverse legend

was associated with the city of

Siris. Now, with the discovery

of the site of Sirinos close to

Pyxus, Sirinos seems the more

likely mint. (See Kraay, ACGC,

ASIA MINOR: UNCERTAIN

The electrum coins from uncertain

mints in Asia Minor, nos. 244-370, are

grouped by denominations in descending

order, according to the following weight

standards: a) Milesian stater, 14.10 g;

b) Phocaic stater, 16.20 g; c) Aeginetan

stater, 12.50 g; d) Euboic-Attic stater,

17.00 g.

J. P. Barron (The Silver Coins of

Samos [London], 1966], p. 16) cautions

that while there is no reason to doubt

Babelon's thesis that no electrum coins

are demonstrably Samian uniess of

Euboic weight, Babelon's contention

that all early electrum coins of Euboic

weight are Samian remains open to

doubt. Hence, most electrum pieces of

presumably Euboic-Attic weight are

included in this section.

V. Fritze references for 411-513 are to

obverse types in H. Von Fritze, "Die

Electronpragung von Kyzikos," Nomis-

ma 7 (1912), pp. 1-38. The coins are

arranged according to his classification

and, in general, his chronological se-

quence, although the earliest absolute

dates may still be questioned. Friedrich

Bodenstedt was doing a revised study of

the electrum of Cyzicus before his un-

timely death. His own chronology had

not yet been finally established. How-

ever, he kindly provided enlarged ped-

igrees and additional references for

several of the coins in this section, where

his corrections and suggestions are em-

bodied. Types not in V. Fritze have

been inserted in accordance with Boden-

stedt's advised sequence.

Warren references are to Kurt Regling,

Die Griechischen Milnzen der Sammlung

Warren (Berlin, 1906).

Only obverse types are described; the

reverses are, by and large, four part in-

cuse squares sometimes bordering on a

"mill sail" pattern, except for Group I

which employs a punch of irregular sur-

faces within an incuse square.

E. S. G. Robinson, in NC 1958, cited

above for the Croesids, has convincingly

established the relative sequence of types

for the Persian sigloi: archer half length;

archer shooting with bow and arrow;

archer running, carrying spear and bow;

archer running, carrying dagger and bow.

of the third type, ca. 490/86 B.C. Nos.

erences are to O. Merkholm and Jan

Zahle, "The Coinage of Kuprlli," Acta A

43 (1972), pp. 57-113. Merkholm has

established that coins of the Lycian

dynasts were struck on three different

Lycian standards: intermediate, heavy,

and light. The intermediate range for

the staters is 8.50-9.50 g. Coins of light

weight appear to emanate from the

western region; while those on the

heavy standard were minted in the

central part of Lycia. The shadowy in-

termediate range, used especially for the

earlier groups, has yet to be located.

Staters nos. 710 under uncertain dynasts

through 720 under Khinakka were struck

to the heavy standard; nos. 724 under

Kuprlli through 732 under Tfiiiemi are

The names of Lycian dynasts in series

LYCIA?

It is debatable whether nos. 733-36,

should be assigned to Lycian dynasts.

No. 733 does not conform to any Lycian

standard, although the types are similar

to SNGvAulock 8475 (a Lycian third

bearing the name Uvug); and again,

although similar in type to SNGvAulock

8474, under the same dynast, the style

of the head on the reverse of 734 is al-

together different. Merkholm also

questions a Lycian provenance for 735-

36.
