Over the past several weeks, weve explored the rhetorical dimensions of humor. Specifically, weve
examined some theories of humor alongside rhetorical theory, discussed some social functions of
comedy, and examined some of the devices employed by a satirical film to invite commentary. Your
next assignment asks you to apply some of the strategies weve discussed, using humor, exaggeration,
and satire to offer commentary on a focused issue of importance to college students and/or members
of the Notre Dame community. Specifically, you will produce a short satirical video PSA (Public Service
Announcement) that offers your own modest proposal to an issue relevant to your audience. You
are encouraged to work in a small group for this project. DUE 3/21 (11:55 p.m.) in Sakai.

Requirements

Your video should be 2-3 minutes in

length (not including any credits).

Your video should borrow from the

expected conventions of a
PSA/proposal.

Your video should demonstrate

awareness of a specific context,
issue/problem, and audience.

Your video should anticipate and

respond to counterarguments.

Your video should use evidence (visual

and otherwise) to develop the
discussion and impact. (note: any
borrowed material MUST be cited.

Your video should use humor and satire

for its argumentative impact.

Additional Materials
In addition to your completed essay, you must turn in:

A companion paper (4 pages, MLA format) describing the context

motivating your project, your intended audience, the overall
concept of your piece, and the response you hope to garner from
viewers. You should integrate at least two scholarly sources in
this discussion.

A storyboard and script (to be completed over spring break)

If working in a group, each member should submit a brief (1-2
paragraph) description of their personal contributions to the
project and overall assessment of the collaborative process.
