Danum House, Overstrand, Norfolk

On Saturday September 26th, along

with good friends from Lincoln, Bob
and Sue Parker, we spent a delightful
evening on the Nth Norfolk Railway
all dressed up to take enjoy a murder
mystery on the steam train.
After a drink on Sheringham platform
we joined a packed train to Holt and
back, twice, to enjoy dinner while we
witnessed a couple of murders and
tried to work out Who Done It.

Crab Tales web site: www.crab-tales.co.uk

From Philip Keddell

Since 2002 my wife Lis and I have been running

the Crab Line then after selling it to see it close
down after only a few months, I decided to set
up the Crab Tales about 12 months later rather
than see it die.
It is been both hard work and I would add good
fun getting to know several hundred great local
people who have either advertised or featured in
articles, along with those who have submitted
photos, articles, letters & events for the paper.
I have now decided to hand over the Crab Tales
and from the next issue out on October 30th the
paper will be run by Liz King, Dennis & Sal.
I wish them all the very best in running this
popular local
free paper.
Lis, who has been
setting the paper
since issue 04 of
the Crab Line has
done a great job
doing the layout
& design of most
of the ads as well
as dealing with all
the Regular and
Special Events
for each and
every issue.
Above: At the Election count in May.

Above: Sal, Liz & Dennis learning the ropes.

It has been a great deal of fun getting to know
the advertisers that we have attracted into the
paper over the years, but I have been doing it
long enough to hand over to another team.
Since I stepped back, when Liz King took over
more of the Advertising work, my poor wife has
had to do a lot more work, not only doing the day
to day bookeeping as well as all the typesetting
and proof reading and she has now decided it
has become too much especially as she is due
shortly for a hip operation and long hours on
the computer do not help.
I am very pleased to say that the new team who
will produce future editions of the Crab Tales
will be keeping to the format & content that our
readers are used to and will not be making any
changes, there may well be fewer mistakes in
the editorial as Dennis will be in charge of

that and as someone who has written and

published several books he will find it easy.
Liz King has been doing excellent work with us
for almost a year by finding new advertisers who
are all very pleased with the response they are
getting and she will continue her good work.
Sal, Dennis wife will be helping him to cover
events by taking photos and checking names.
I wish them all the very best for a long and
happy future of many more Crab Tales in
the years to come.
Meanwhile I will be contacting all our loyal
advertisers, many of whom have been with
us since day one, with new bank details
and contact names and addresses.
We will also supply the new team with all the
contact details for those readers who regularly
send us articles, photos and press releases.
For new submissions please use contact details
below. We will forward e-mails on but it will
save us work & ensure that copy dates are not
missed to use the NEW contacts.

Dear Editor,

I have launched a campaign called Every Child

Deserves An Advent Calendar. I also launched
the campaign on Facebook, under the same name.
With the support of Morrisons in Cromer and the
Cromer & District food bank, which covers all
of North Norfolk I am aiming to add an advent
calendar for every food parcel over Christmas
because every child deserves an advent calendar!
I am asking people to help the campaign by
donating an advent calendar and taking it to
one of the collection points.
Calendars can be dropped off from now until
Friday 13th November at these collection
points: Morrisons in Cromer, Panache Hair
Salon in Cromer or at your local food bank.
Children whos parents rely on donations from
food banks may not get one for 2 simple reasons.
The first is that people dont think to donate
advent calendars as they are considered a
luxury item and secondly they simply
cannot afford to buy one.
In this ever changing economy none of us know
when we may need to use a food bank and as a
parent, how would I feel if something that I have
always managed to give my child I cannot
afford any longer. This is my reason for
this campaign.
Although this campaign covers the Nth Norfolk
area, anyone can donate or contribute to their
own local area.

The Campaign has been running since October

1st and runs until November 13th so that the
Cromer and District Foodbank have time to
distribute to their clients all over the area in
good time so that the children can use them
from 1st December. Once this area has been
covered any extra calendars will be passed
on to the neighbouring food banks.
The campaign has so far received a great response
that is growing & growing but I need your help
to get this out there and to make a difference.
We need to educate our children that not every
child has what they have, which is why my
daughter has decided to have one advent
calendar this year and donate the others
that she receives to this great cause!
Kind Regards
Kerrie Wisbey

Dear Editor,

Isnt it funny how those who are most nostalgic

about the second Great War are those people
who didnt live through it. My parents did
and they said it was rubbish.
The report of the Sheringham 1940s nostalgia
weekend by Dennis and Sal has prompted me
to share with your readers something written
about the English by John Bright in 1853.
According to Bright we had allowed ourselves
the comforting delusion that we were a

peace-loving people. On the contrary, he
argued: We have been the most combative and
aggressive community that has existed since
the days of the Roman dominion. Since the
revolution of 1688 we have expended... millions
of money upon wars, not one of which has been
upon our shores, or in defence of our hearth
and homes. For so it is, says a not unfriendly
foreign critic, other nations fight at or near
their home territory: the English everywhere.
If Dennis and Sal are to be believed many folk
at Sheringham were looking forward to a third
Great War. Oh dear. There will be no more
nostalgia weekends after that.
Yours sincerely
Philip Graham.

The work of Dreamstones Productions, run by

Jo and John Berry from Mundesley was simply
brilliant with nearly everyone dressed in Fortys
gear and very much taking part in this Who
Done It mystery of fun.

Within a matter of half an hour I decided that

Michelle Le Appy (above) was guilty of these
murders before they ever happened.

An hour later I changed my mind and decided

that Private Frank Spencer (Above) had shot
one of the victims on the platform in Holt
and the other at Weybourne Station.
All the actors and actress did a very misleading
but great job of trying to decide who did it even
more impossible to work out. Meanwhile we
enjoyed a delicious dinner with a couple of
bottles of wine.
No one near us got it right and on our return to
Sheringham just after 10.30 we were told that
Michelle Le Appy, played by Lorna Miller-Fink
had murdered both Capt Waryman (Ian Miller)
and Col (Lord) Blithering-Platt.

These Murder Mystery evenings are great fun

even if you dont guess who the culprit is.
The next 3 evenings on the Poppy Line this year
are booked up but visit Dreamstones website:
www.dreamstoneproductions.co.uk for next
years dates and do go to one of these brilliant
productions and enjoy taking part.
Thank you everyone involved for a great evening
of fun. It really is a 10 out of 10 event, as these
photos (mostly by) Chloe Baker-Cooper show.

Sheringham Tourist
Information Centre

The NNDC has handed the Information Centre

over to North Norfolk Railway, paving the way
for a newly redeveloped TIC and toilet
facilities & improved opening hours.
The transfer was dependent on a successful
Coastal Communities Grant bid by the NNR
for 450,000 for a wider development of the
site at Sheringham, awarded in January 2015.
Following the handover, NNR will demolish
the toilets at Station Approach together with
the TIC and rebuild a new shop, office, TIC
and toilet facility. NNR will run the TIC and
the toilets and has committed to re-opening
the facilities in April 2016.
It is expected that the new TIC will be run by
railway staff and will open throughout the year.
Temporary toilets that have been installed on
the Station Approach car park will be available
for the duration of the project (subject to
opening hours).
Work will start immediately to ensure the new
facilities & new shop for the Railway will be
available from April 2016.
The project will also see the buffet on the station
doubled in size to help provide better facilities
for the growing number of passengers.

Californian Fun
Fun Fun

The group is made up of Ian Baker, whose brother

Adrian is, at this moment, in America touring
with the American Beach Boys; Dacre Peck;
Ben Whiston and the drummer Paul Johnson.
The sound they produce without the aid of
backing tapes or other paraphernalia that so
demeans live acts, (lip-synching anybody?)
is truly remarkable.

We enjoyed a fantastic night of California summer

harmonies when we attended a sold-out show at
Woodland Camp Clubhouse to see and hear the
wonderful UK Beach Boys.

The UK Beach Boys are as good as the real thing

and one of the few tribute bands that have
actually appeared on stage with the originals.

If one closed ones eyes, one could be transported

to the sandy beaches and balmy winds of the
western state, the sound being so true to
the original.

We look forward to a possible return for this

internationally successful band so that we
can all, once again, sing along with the
songs and enjoy the days of youth.
Thank you to them and all those
who organised the evening.

My Story

The Catering Manager Mike Watson was then

appointed the General Manager and we carried
on throughout the season with lots of organ music
played in the ballroom by myself, horseshoe
pitching & swimming galas...where I would
always get thrown in the pool fully dressed.
What used to infuriate the entertainers was the
admin staff who at times would blatantly walk
across the dance floor stage area while we were
performing.........it was the height of ignorance.

by Paul Long

In mid January1992, I went for an audition as a

resident entertainer with then the holiday group
company Holimarine UK. The auditions were
held at Bridgwater Bay, Somerset.
I was greeted by the Regional Entertainments
Director, Mervyn Francis, who after discussing
what I could offer the park, decided that I would
be better received at an over 50s Holiday camp
due to the brand of entertainment that I offered
which was sing along type Reginald Dixon
music on the organ.

I eventually returned home to tell my parents that

I was to be posted off to a seaside town named
Mundesley which I had never heard of.
Several days later I received my rehearsals
schedule and my arrival date on the camp.
My father drove me from my home town in
Loughborough to Mundesley but on turning
right off the Paston Road, I asked my dad to
stop the car and as we came to a halt on this
dusty old road freezing cold in early March
I wondered what I had let myself in for....
I had second thoughts.
Never the less we continued along the road and
my father bid me farewell....much to his delight
Im sure and I was shown my accommodation
by the housekeeper.
Several hours later having settled in, I received
a knock on my door, a middle aged gentleman
entered my chalet and introduced himself to me
he was my entertainments manager for the season.

more and more in love with this little camp

and its occupants and in Mundesley.
Sadly the camp was placed into receivership and
Holimarine and its assets were frozen so it was
then hit and miss whether our jobs were safe.
Thankfully we saw the whole season through
and finished our contract with pride in
November after a very long season.
The next year, 1993, I received a call from John
Carr asking me to return, back to the camp, but
headlined with 2 new Entertainment Managers
Richard & Sonia Taylor, who in a previous
capacity, were Entertainment Managers
here a few years before me.
Of course I accepted and yet again off we drove
for my 2nd season. When I was introduced to
the team of Bluecoats it was quite clear they
had never performed the role of holiday host
and I was promoted to Chief Bluecoat, as I
previously performed this role for at least
15 years at Butlins as a Redcoat.
As the season started I heard a rumour that John
Carr had been relieved of his duties as General
Manager, which saddened me, he was a fine
upstanding honest man who saw the camp sink
and brought it back to the surface. Ill never
forget John, he was a true inspiration to me
and in how to manage people.

Some of the staff were fab though like Otto the

lifeguard who couldnt swim who was a bit of a
womanizer & Derrick the maintenance manager
who used to go crazy if we had the ballroom
lights on during the day time.
Ray Dent was the bar manager and a really
nice gentleman to know.
We finished another season with pride and were
under the impression we were to return but
sadly none of us were asked.
I continued as a organist back in Loughborough
until the season started and progressed onwards
to entertainments directors level.
My mother Diane loved the town and the camp
and its people and so it was agreed that she and
my dad should retire to Mundesley but sadly
I lost my mum in 1999 but the memory that
I hold of her is in this quiet sleepy place
and the camp.....
God Bless Mundesley folks.
Thanks to Paul Long, Organist Entertainer, for
this article. I gather that Paul will soon be
visiting Mundesley so hope he enjoys it.

WHERE CAN I GET MY CRAB TALES?

We decided to go for a drink in this quiet town

and ended up getting totally bladdered at the pub
and ended up arm in arm walking back to the
camp singing Good Night Campers.
The rest of the team arrived the next day and
rehearsals began for two weeks in freezing
conditions as the heating was switched off.
Just as the season started we were introduced to
the General Manager, a giant of a man, named
John J Carr...I had a fabulous working relationship
with this guy who I understood very well.
The season began in earnest and the shows....
although a little tacky, due to stage fright,
did become better and well timed.
My parents frequently visited me although they
did stay off the camp at The Royal Hotel.
We starred in all our shows which were 7 days
a week. The team consisted of two dance girls,
a sports organiser, an organist and drummer for
sequence dancing, show work and as assistant
to the manager. As the season progressed I fell

Aylsham Food
Festival

An extraordinarily warm October morning on

Friday 2nd, found Liz, Sal and Dennis, along
with Beryl, at the 10th Aylsham Food Festival.
Parking was difficult but all found suitable spots
before we entered the Town Hall to a small display
of goods fresh and delicious, along with many
fresh jams, marmalades and chutneys.
We chatted for some time to Linda Cletheroe, of
Lindas Veg, who explained that everything was
grown on her plot at home in Edgefield and in
the best spirit of the Festival explained that she
was absolutely devoted to fresh, local produce.

Town Hall

Following directions from Jill, each child made

a cake mix decorated with fruit and then the mixes
were whisked away for baking in the ovens of
the Aylsham Co-op, who also supplied all the
ingredients for free.

The smartly dressed children were excited at the

prospect of actually baking something and led
by Jill Willis, whose husband Roger is the ringmaster of all events, and her volunteers they
were, in short order, dressed in protective
clothing and standing over bowls of mix.

In less than 30 mins the cakes were baked, the

children screeched with joy at their accomplishment and Den & Sal were very proud of them.

From there, the intrepid trio walked to Aylsham
Parish Church to watch schoolchildren being
taught how to bake cakes.

And so the cake is made.

On Saturday 3rd October and in the marquee
cookery demonstrations were held featuring
Derrol Waller, a proper Norfolk chef, and
by Mark Sayers, Head Chef at the Saracens
Head, Wolterton, where Den and Sal can
confirm that the food is delicious.
There were also demonstrations from Daniel
Smith, Chef Patron at the Ingham Swan and
from Vanessa Scott and Mary Kemp, coauthors of Everything Stops For Tea, a
Norfolk cook book.
There was further cookery from Charlie Hodson,
Executive Chef at the Great Hospital in Norwich.
Entertainment in the Town Hall came from
Gordon Blur, The Juggling Chef and music
from One Foot In The Groove.
There was face-painting for children and wine
tasting for adults (not for Den & Sal, however,
neither of whom drink very much, which is
amazing considering both of them worked
for years in Public Houses!).
All in all this was a very proper food festival,
with proper food cooked by proper chefs and
next year we will get there earlier and eat
more of the food (well, at our age you
cant give up everything!).

Mundesley Independent Lifeboat is looking for more volunteers to join as Boat crew or
Shore Crew to assist and save lives between Walcott and Overstrand. They would ideally
need to live or work within 15mins of the Mundesley Lifeboat Station and be able to
respond by pager callout when required. Regular training takes place on Sundays between
9am and 1pm and Mondays between 7pm and 9pm at the boathouse. The service works
closely with HM Coastguard, Search and Rescue helicopters from Humberside, East
Anglian Air Ambulance and other lifeboat services along the coast. As well as providing a
specialised coastal flood rescue team on the North Norfolk Coast. Full training takes a year
and is funded by donations & income from the Mundesley lifeboat charity shop in Station Rd,
Mundesley. For more information email the coxswain on: waynemilb@yahoo.co.uk or
visit the boathouse on a Sunday morning. You will be made most welcome by a dedicated
team of volunteers who will be pleased to show you round the facility and have a coffee.

Opposite the Church and next door to

Budgens in the High Street you will
find CROMER EYECARE.
Cromer EyeCare provides a Comprehensive
Professional Fully Insured & Qualified Eye
care Service for the North Norfolk Area.
Julien Nelson the Managing Dispensing
Optician and his team of Ken Seaman,
(Resident Optometrist), Lorraine, Helen
and Lynn offer you a warm welcome to
the practice.
Ken has over 35 years experience in the
profession and you can be assured that your
eyesight will be in safe hands with his
acquired knowledge, and he will always
allow the time to achieve the best results.
You only have one pair of eyes the old
adage of prevention is better than cure
is very true for any age especially with
Glaucoma and UV exposure.
Julien has Dispensed spectacles for over 30
years and takes time to find out your visual
needs and requirements before commencing
a dispensing, as sometimes you cannot expect
one pair of spectacles or contact lenses to do
it all. He also makes sure the spectacles meet
a high standard of accuracy.
Julien is assisted by Lorraine who is
a Qualified Ophthalmic Dispensing
Assistant and carries out the Retinal
Photography and Field Screening,
whilst also helping in frame selection,
fitting & reception. Helen and Lynn
are the front of house on reception

always ensuring a
warm welcome
either in person
or on the phone.
They will offer you
an appointment
time to suit your
requirements.
Appointments range
from 9.00am - 4.25pm
on weekdays.
8.00am - 12.30pm
on Saturday.
We will soon be offering an evening clinic
once a fortnight to
start with.
Cromer EyeCare has always kept up with
the latest equipment and has been offering
Retinal Photography for many years now.
We have a full and varied frame stock with
prices ranging from 15.00 upwards, and
are able to access any particular lens that
your prescription may require.
We also stock many accessories and a
range of sports spectacles to compliment
your hobby.
Cromer EyeCare has an on-site workshop
managed by Julien whereby 90% of the
spectacles are made on the premises this
enables a very fast service on stock single
vision lenses with many produced on the
same day.
For more complex spectacles it is usually
within a week to 10 days.

From Julien Nelson

I am running the Great Ethiopian Run in

Africa for Vision Aid Overseas on the
22nd November 2015, as it is the 30th
Anniversary that Vision Aid has been
going and it is a major fundraiser for
on going projects.
Vision Aid Overseas is a registered charity
whose overseas volunteers are qualified
members of the optical profession in the
UK whether they are Optometrists or
Dispensing Opticians or Technicians.
I have been a member for 25 of the 30 years
and my first overseas trip was to Sierra Leone
in 1992 this was before the civil war that
was to cause so much devastation, this trip
was to set up a clinic in a suburb called Bo
near the gold mining area on the borders
near Liberia, part of this trip was to set up
a workshop so for the first time they had
the ability to cut a lens to fit a frame.
The equipment we took from England had
been donated to the charity by my father,
this was the first workshop Vision Aid set
up in Africa there were many challenges
due to very poor electricity and water
supplies,but this equipment was perfect
as it only required a bucket of water
rather than running water.
The charity has always collected donated
spectacles and continues to do so, these are
forwarded into a program called Specsort
which cleans & grades the powers, broken
spectacles are used for re-cycling as it is
better to not supply anything that is damaged in case of breakage so soon after being
given the gift of sight for the first time.

part of a loyalty customer program whereby
you pay a monthly fee by Direct Debit
from 10.00.
For this you can be seen by our Optometrist
as and when you feel the need, and for your
commitment, you will get up to 30% off all
spectacles that you buy regardless of how
many pairs you purchase, therefore
enabling you to express yourself
a bit more!!
Your monthly fee also includes spectacle
insurance with limited excess to pay.
Please call in and enquire about this

will prove very popular and rewarding.
is levied as it has been proven that if they
pay for something they look after it, if it
is free they expect more.

From very humble beginnings of mass

clinics in very remote areas the charity
has formulated a very thorough teaching
program wereby many students are taught
the basics of conducting an eye-examination so when the volunteers are not there
work can continue, another set of students
are taught how to make the spectacles so
people can have exact spectacles rather
than nearest match from donation.
The donated specs are still a very big part
of the charities work as the outreach clinics
in areas that have little or no money they are
still required, a small cost of about 0.20p

Vision Aid Overseas has now set up fully

funded courses and workshops in 5 African
countries now, I have been to Sierra Leone
3x, Ethiopia 2x, Ghana, Burkina Faso and
India each and every one has many different
and wonderful memories ranging from:
Twins aged 50 seeing each other for
the first time.
A mum being able to see her baby.
Farmers being able to go back to work as
they can see therefore being able to feed the
family and let the children attend school.
Seeing a tree for the first time.
The list is never ending.
I am approaching 50 early next year and the
challenge to run a race in the third highest
capital of the world and the highest in Africa
and support a cause which has helped shape
my working career and brought joy that you
wouldnt think a pair of spectacles could
bring to a person by the simple gift of
sight something which many of us take
for granted and dont act upon until it
is to late, prevention is better than
cure for many eye conditions.

Increase Of Inheritance
Tax Allowance to 1 million

where home inherited by descendants.

Written by Miranda Marshall
Director at Hayes + Storr

A family home is likely to remain the primary

asset for many middle-income taxpayers.
Fortunately there are new provisions in the
Finance Bill 2015 that provide significant
potential benefits to tax-payers leaving
their home to descendants.
So says the Governments preamble to the Finance
Bill 2015. It must, of course, be passed by
Parliament in order to become law.
The small print is far from straight-forward
and this is not the universal panacea that it
might first seem.
The Finance Bill 2015 inserts a new section
into the Inheritance Act 1984. It will provide
an extra Nil Rate Band if the home passes
to descendants. It will apply only to deaths
after 6th April 2017.
The effect should eventually be to increase the
Nil Rate Band for a home-owning married
couple (or civil partners) to 1,000,000.
The relief will start to take effect in April 2017.
It will be phased in, starting with an additional
100,000 in 2017, 125,000 in 2018, 150,000
in 2019 and then the final 175,000 in 2020.
The ordinary Nil Rate Band of 325,000
will remain frozen until April 2021.
The home must pass to a direct descendant of
the deceased, which includes step-children
but not unmarried partners who lived at the
property with the deceased.
Any unused band will be transferable to a spouse
or civil partner. There is tapered withdrawal of
the new band for estates valued at more than
2,000,000.
To avoid those who sell their homes, to
downsize or to move into care or to live with
relatives, being treated unfairly, it is proposed
that legislation will be included in the 2016
Finance Bill to extend this relief where the
deceased downsized or ceased to own a
residence on or after 8th July 2015.

home in the interim.

Stay Well This Winter Get Your Flu Vaccination

GP Practices in Nth Norfolk & rural Broadland

are urging patients to book in for a free NHS
flu vaccination.
People with serious health conditions, adults
over 65, some carers and healthy children
between the age of 2 and 4 all qualify for
one free from the NHS.
Pregnant women & children in primary school
years one and two are also eligible.
GPs and nurses at your local medical practice
are geared up to vaccinate patients over the
coming weeks. Many have arranged special
flu vaccination sessions.
The clinics are usually very busy and wellcoordinated affairs. Teams of doctors and
nurses are on hand to vaccinate a patient
every two minutes or so.
The flu jab for adults and nasal sprays for
children can be a lifesaver. It is safe and
it cannot give you flu, because it does not
contain live viruses.
Flu is not like a bad cold, it is a debilitating
condition which affects the whole body.
It can increase the risk of developing more serious
illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia, or
can make existing conditions worse.
Serious cases of flu can result in being admitted
to hospital, and in some instances could be fatal.
Your GP practice, health visitor or school
nurse can offer more details, or there is
much more detailed guidance at:

History Tales - Bodham

Domesday Book

Bodham has an entry in the

Domesday Book of 1085.
In the great book Bodham is recorded
by the names Bod(en)ham & Botham.
The main landholders were Hugh de
Montfort and Walter Gifford. The
main tenant was said to be Ralph.

All Saints Church

All Saints Church, Bodham, is an

interesting flint built building, consisting of Nave, Chancel, South
Porch and a square tower.
There is evidence of Saxon remains
in the fabric of the church. The font
is of plain, octagonal structure and
stated to be from the 15th century.
In the porch are the remains of a holy
water stoup, showing original glazed
tiles. The pews & pulpit and several
memorials were originally in the
chapel of Beckham Workhouse.
There is also a royal arms for
Queen Anne.

Congratulations to Polly Primrose, aged 3, from

Leicester, who found the crab on page 2, in the
Norfolk Poultry advert & to Mrs C Fitt, from
Necton, who spotted the Cod on Page 9
in the advert for Extra Hands.

The Teacher ....

...asked her class to write down on a piece of

paper the type of work their Dads did.
The children, very excitedly, scribbled their
answers. One by one, the teacher asked each
child to stand and describe the job.
There was much laughter & screaming,
apart from little Tommy.
Tommy why do you look so sad?
asked the teacher.
Tommy rose slowly to his feet and replied:
My Dads a stripper in a Gay Bar
The other children remained silent as Tommy
continued: Sometimes he doesnt come home
and my Mum sits crying. Sometimes he sells
his body for other mens pleasure.
There were gasps around the classroom.
The teacher acted quickly and dismissed the
children, telling them to go out and play.
She then walked up to little Tommy, put her
arm around his shoulder and asked:
Is all that true Tommy?
No not at all Miss. He really plays Rugby for
England, but I was too embarrassed to say.
