done i n the past, or do something because a guy with a black belt told me ta doit. Th at is ali
bullshlt. Belt rankings in real fighting don 't m ean anything. 1 have Black Bel ts ln Tae Kwon Do
(second degree) and in Kyokushin Karate (a lso second degree), so 1 know what 1 am talking
about. Practlclng something one hundred times in a d ojo and being i n a real fight are two
comptetely different th ings!
But let's get back to what r was saying eartier. r really thought a great deal about flghtlng and
wanted ta put those thou ghts here. l've trled ta look at every angle, ta make my dream
system come ta Il fe. 1 thlnk that l'vecome really dose ta making that a reality.
l've always wanted to test out everything to find out if it works under pressure. 1 never
though t something was right just because somebody said so or because 1 read lt ln a book or
because [ saw iton a vid eo. Anybody in the whole wide world can make a book or a video, and
that doesn't m ean that t he things in the book or video are necessarily t rue or effective. A Iso, if
a certain style of combat does the sa me thlng for the last 100 hundred years wlt hout chonge,
1 say t hat they are doing it wrong. Everything changes and should get better. cars get better,
people gct better, tennis players get better techniques, and soccer players get better
techniques. 1 can go on and on here. Vou see what l'rn gettlng at? Most t hlngs l n llfe are
e volving ali the ti me, so do not stick with an old tradition blindly. Da re t a change when it reels
rlght. l'm not saylng stop your respect of old tradition. No, DO respect tradition and keep
clolng lt, but If you are training for flghtlng
must change and/or lmprove ln arder ta stay
ahead of your competition because everybody else does. And believe me, they, your
co m1;otltln, a r cormantly getti ~O btter and tlly ,.,a nt to M bett:er tMan VOU! So stay 011
vour toes and move forward. Oon't stand stlll or the wortd mlghl pass you by. l t's possible
that even t his book will get old eventually and there probably will be something better. 1
doubt this will happen but lt 15 possible, because tlme marches on and eve1ytl\lng changes.
l stlll llke ta walk through ka tas (a Japanese term meanlng a set arrangement of martial arts
maves and techniques), or Pum Se's {Korean katas). ltls an old tradition and 1 think that lt ls
good l oryour brcathlng rhythm, your techn lcal skllls and your memory. But pleasc don't tell
me t hat lt will make you a good flghter because ltdoesn't. Vou need to spar for t hatl
So, the sa me as 1 am golng to tell you ln Vol ume 2, spar a loti l t ls the closest thlng to a 1-eal
flght . Thcre ls no preparation better for an actual flght than sparrlng. For condlt lonlng you
should do the Thal Pads AFTER you spa ri
vou
l
1
There are a number of simple thlngs that 1 will remlnd you of ! h roughout the book. Llke
"Aiways keep your eyes on your opponentl" Sounds pretty loglcal and simple, rlght ?
Weil, lt lsn't. The punch or kick that you don't see comlng will probably be the one t l\ at ki\Ocks
you ou tl
Stay calm and use energy only when you need lt. If you are flghtlng wlth a lot o f stress, t hen
you will be tense. This alone will cause you to loseall your power and stamlna .
One of the nrst t imes r saw a true study ln effective relaxation was wlth a good frlend of mine
(and a SUPER Thal Boxer) named PeterAerts (aIso from Holland). lwas amazed. He isalways
com pletely relaxed. It doesn't m atter for him if he is going into t he super market or lnto a
flght, he ls always very calm and free oftension. Keeping relaxed like this definitely improves
his stamina. Another good example, but this time in the world of NHB fighting, is Kazushi
Sakuraba from Japan. He is ahm~ys super cool and because of this he will have a lot more
energy than the people he foghts who ARE Slfessed and not relaxed. Belng relaxed can make
the maglcal and devasta t ing maves of the martial arts effortless.
Good luckl 1 know you are going to enjoy yourselfl

Use your shln as a strlklng target when you klck your opponents legs

otherwose you have to be so close to your opponent and be very

Front Kicks
Make sure th at you pull your kneo up lirst beloro you k1ck. With this

Forwardl Llke you are pushlng him away. Almosllike a righi stralghl

If you kick upwards thore is the ch..,_ thal you'A hit his elbow wnh

What can 1say about this chapter1 Just lly not to gel hill Il sounds ctillicull and
trust me. il is cfiffcult. But, wlth real dedicalion and by practiclng a few basic
ptinciptes, anyone can leam to have good defense.
1lhink the best lhing is to at.vays stay out ot reach ol your opponenl's hands. You
don't have to be real lar away. just barely out ollfleir danger zone. So even when
you block, and you If miSs thal block. he shll can't reach you. But if you are too
lar away Il wlll tako longer to gel close enough to your opponentto deriver an
oHensive or counter anack.
Wilh kicks this distance ls more dlllicult because the legs are longer thon the
arms. But because the legs are elower !han the hands you Will see kicks coming
easier than punches. Kicks thal are set up with a punchlng combo are more
dilffcultto read. But here 1go agaln; pmci1Ce wll do the tnck.. . and lots of sparring.
Standing on the balls of your leet wiU mako sure thal you rnovo !aster lorward
and backward, so thatrs very rmponant.

Wh alever you do, keep looklng at your opponent! Never tum your head away.
11 yoo keep looking and you get hit, atleast you can move wilh \hal punch, or
punches, or you can get ready for \he impact. The punch thal you don1 see
comlng is the KO punch or kict<. A f1ghter who JUSI has been KO'd will olten tell
you: "1 dldn'l sce the punch or kick, wllat id heM me 1'lilh?'
So thal is the most Important thing, eyes on your opponent, whatever happons.
DO NOT T\JRN AWAYI tf you gel lnto trouble trom slrikes you can always grab
your opponent. lie up tho arms and clinch.
Also, keop your hands ln Iront of your lace and your olbowS low to protecl your
body. The best place to keep your hands is just below your oyes or just above
your eyebrows, depending on the attack that IS happening Do not hold your
hands direclty 1n front of your eyes because If your opponent hlts your hands you
will hlt yoursellln your own eyosl
tf you btock kicks and puncheS, make sure \hat your hands and olbows stay in
pre"y much the sa me position. This is for kicks and punchos to tho upper body
plus head of course.
Il you start bfoel<riQ kicks to the body l'or\11 your hands, you wlllloavo you1head
opon. If your opponontts a smart one, ho can uso thatto sot you up w1th a com
blnat1on whe<e he kiCks to the body and folows up w1th a punch to tho head.
Atso, if you leave your hands in front ol your lace and your olbows tow to protoot
the body, you will have no "pante roactJOns" Vou are 1n a good posrtiO<'I to just

Vou see me maklng the counter combinabons lor punches. Vou can use ali of those
combinatioos aer different punches thal you bklck or slip. 1wiV grve you an example.
If 1block a loft stralght from hlm fike 1dld ln the picluros, and 1countor lhalleft straight
wlth a felt stralgh~ righi stralghlleft hook. nght 1ow luet<. put my foot back, and another
righi straight. Vou canuse thal exact combtnaboo every tlfno after your counter bagins
wlth a lefi stralght. So Il he altocks me wrl h a nght hook and 1move backwards, 1con
counter exactly the same: a loft stralghl righi straight. loft hook. righi low kick, put my
foot back. and another nght straJghl
Another exemple:
Il somebody attacks me wllh a loft hook, llaan back, let hlm miss and counter attack
W1lh: a nght &ttalght, lelt hook, nght straogtu and a left low kick onsido. 1can do exacUy
tho same comblnatlon whon ho woold anock me woth o rlght stralght, 1block tho righi
strolght (llke 1show ln tho plctures) and thon countor wlth; a righi otralglu. lelt hook.
righi straight and a lelt low luet< insode. See? The seme Vou can do this with ali the
snacks of course.
This will also count for the next chapter, BLOCKS AND COUNTERS AGAINST KICKSI
Lets use thatlest oxample thotl showed hore. Il now an opponent would attack me
wlth a leU kick to the body, 1could ALSO counter woth oxoctly the samo counter thol
l iust used: o righi stralght, loft hook. righi atralght and a loft low kick tnslde, samo
thlng aga ln. Or he attacks me Wllh a nghtlow klck, 1check the kick AND count or wllh;
a righi stralght. loft hook. righi sttaight and a lefl tow lock lnsode.
So that's wh y you see me dolng onty dolng a lew combo's at the ond ollhls chapter,
you can use ell lhe counter ellacks lhatl Showed balore when ho attacked mo wlth
diHorent punch oombirlauons
Anolher noto, once vou start a counter wllh a, lefs say, loft low kick lnslde, you can
counter with ali the offensrve ellacks !hall mal<e in Chapter 9 lhal slart with a leltlow
kick inside. Plesse keep lhiS on mondll Th os way you wt get more out of this bookl

You're on your back. Your opponent escapes from your guard and
stands up, but leans over yoo w ith his hands down. What should
you do? KnocJ< him out with a kick to the head. lhat's what. There
have been severa! dasslc examples ol thas: Renzo Graoe (Braz)
took oui Oleg Taktarov (Russla) with this kick. So dld Munlo
Buslamante (Brazll) when ho st opped Jerry Bohlandor (USA).
And one ol tho greatest showcase for d1fferen1 ways to kick yoor
opponent when ho os standang and you'ro on your back is wh on
Allan Goes (Braz1l) lought Kazushi Sakuraba (Japan). Allan klcked

Allhough 1 am not known as a take dawn artist. 1am real!y getting into il and as a
resul! am gel better and better at it. llove takedowns and the little things thal you
can do to achleve them.
Takedowns are very lmportanllo know. especialy when yoo are a grou nd llghter.
Take tor instance 1he f~t belweef'l Roy Graoo and Kazushi Sakurabe Roy's
ma1n style is Ju J11SU. Mean1119 he's greai al groLnd ftgh!Jng and going for submsslon ho ids. Woll. ln thal fllJhl. he couldn'llake Sakurabe down whoch beeame the
reason thal he was defealed. Sakurabe kepi kicking his logs and didn't go 10 the
ground unloss he wanted to. Royco had to stop beeause he couldn't walk anymore.
1wished thal they had wreslling ln Holtand ika they have he re ln the Statos
because thon 1 would have beon bener at rt. ln HolltJnd yoo don't have many
wresding schools and cena""y do not have rt 11 oolege
Dcfending aga1nst takedowns IS atso of equallmp0f1anco. ESPECIALLY when
you are a atrlkor. Vou want 10 koep the f~l on your feet Look at Jons Pulver,
ho's got great hands. his kicks oro ge111ng belier ali tho lime and 110 ls vory hard
to lake down. If ho were to llght eomoono who ls a superlor strlker, hko K-1 leval,
he wouid sim ply Jake him dol'ln because Jens 15 also a very good wro&llor This
glves him o c:ompete set of tools to wm a fight whstovor way ho Chooses.
Vou see. 11 you know how 10 wre~>tle and yoo know how to stnke and ground figtlt
you hava mon y options! Loarn lllkedew.ns and tho defense agonsttakodowns.
They are a must!

Tradltlonal Roots:
That's me side klcking as a young Green Belt in Holland. 1started
in traditional martial arts and hold ranking Black Belts in Mas
Oyama's, Japanese Kyokushinkai Karate and Korean Tae Kwon
Do. Traditional martial arts offer a great foundation for mixed
martial arts and it upsets me when people put down the value
traditional training. Everyone has to start somewhere and
traditional martial arts training is a great way to begin before
moving on to NHB or other styles of mixed martial arts combat.
The combination of traditional techniques with takedowns and
submission grappling is sure to give you an unbeatable fighting
system. To be successful keep an open mind to ali the fighting
arts and what they have to offer.

Both the UFC and PRIDE allow punches, l<icks, knces, wrestling, grappling, takedowns and
submlsslon holds; fighters canwin by knockout, referee or doctor's stoppage, submission,
judges decision or disqualification . lllegal techniques in common are: eye gouging, bi ting,
headbutts, striking behind the head or spi ne and fish hooking. If tho action on the grou nd
sl ows down the referee has the option to nostartthcfighters standing. Bothshows now have
welght divisions and no-tournamont, single fight championship matches. Both require
alhletes to wear glovcs when they compele. And yes. both events have ring girl si
Main Differences:
Tho UFC has five welght divisi ons: 111eavywelght (over 205 pounds/93 kilos), llghl
heavywelght(18S204.~ pounds/9Z,9~3,ll k!IOI ), mil!lllewelghl (170-184.9 pounqs/77.1-83.9
kilos), Welterwelght (155169.9 pounds/70.3-77.1 kilos), llghtwolght (154.9 pounds/70.3).
PRIDE curronlly has two wolght divisions: heavyweight (over 205 pounds/93 kilos) and
mlddlowolght (under205 pounds/ 93 kilos), UFC undercard match os are holdwith a duratlon
of 311ve minute rounds. UFC tille flghts are held for a duratlon of 5-flvo minute rounds. Ali
PRIOE llghts are held for a du ration of 3 rounds: one round of 10 minutes and IWo rounds of
five minutes each.
PRIOE ls held ln a boxlng ring whllethe UFC l s held ln an octagon shaped cage.

A Final Thoughl About MMA
If you look back at the fights in 1993 and see howthey stack up !othe contests oftoday, wi th

for instance; there are about a half dozcn basic ways to throw punches. Then it's up ta you

a doorman really cramped his competition career, not to mention his training. Now it was time for
tessons only leamed from the schoot of hard knocks. As Bas describes il, " Aller four years of
partying and bouncing somebody asked me on New Year's Eve if 1was interested in Rghling
against Frank Lob man, a very dangerous fiQhter at that time with no tosses and a 90% KO rate. He
had just come out of jail and wanted to fiQhl again. 1was drunk and sa id, 'OK, no problem.' TI1ey
started to promote the fight and about fourweeks before the fig hl they asked me if everythlng was
stiJl on. 1had completely forgotten thal conversation 1had on New Year's eve. But they refteshed
my memory and 1thought thal there was no way thal 1coutd refuse this. OK, 1said, tet's try it. So
now 1needed a good school to train at. My p4cll was Maeng Ho in Holland. Thal is the gym where
Ramon Dekker (one of the greatest leons in Muay Thai)trains. 1atways looked up to him. My first
workout there 1couldn\ even finish the rope skipping. 1should have had trained mu ch longer for a
Rght)ike thal but hey, the bestlessons are the cnes you learn the hard way. llost thatfight."
"Another tlme 1had a fight against an upcomlng guy named Renee Roze. lt was a real good first

"My next fight was agalnst a French guy. t trarned reallywell but the lest week lgot an infection. And
on top or !hat 1was invited to stay a couple e>f clays ln 'The Police Hotel' rree of charges because l

they let me go and stupid me l fought thal fight. The first round l knocked the guy down ttlree limes

Why bother and try to entertaln these dumb people, ls what lthought and l swore never to flght ln

But El Guapo stlll had the martial art feeling deep ln his bones and wanted to do somelhlng else,
somethlng new. Ever the natural entertalner. Rutten started to perform martial arts shows set to
music ln discotheques. This simple concept began to lake off and he soon found 111mself at larger
venues and eventually television. At one of these shows Bas was approached by a man named
Chris Dolman . Dolman had a reputation and being one of the forefathers of mixed martial arts ln
Holland, whlch at the time was called free llght. He asked Bas if he would like to fight in Japan for
him. Soon Rutten was getting his first teste of grappllng. ln the first class he was confident thal he
coule! withstand a chokehold. The result was his throat got so sore th at he couldn'l eat for about
four days! He livecl80 miles from the gym andwhlleclriving home he had to cali his wife and tell her
he was so ti red that he would have to sleep in the car next to the road. She laughed and asked if he
was ever golng togo back. He said he would not only go bacll but in the coming months tap out ali
the guys who submltled him. ln his words the change came quicker th an he expected, " 1couldn'l
train a lot, 1was still bouncing and teaching and Amsterdam is 80 miles away from my home town.
ln Holland, 80 miles is a fot, the whole countryis maybe 200 miles big. Also 1had sorne injuries and
thal kept me away from training. Then one day Chris Dolman gave me a cali and he told me t11at
there were Iwo Japanese guys corning to watch the training and that they were searching for
fighters for a new organization called Pancrase (at the time Japan's cuHing edge mixed martial
arts event, also known as 'hybrid wrestting'}. They were Masakatsu Funaki (a gifted martial arts
