2-day GIS fast-track* Course

*Learn the basics of GIS on a 2-day intensive course

GIS?
GIS is a powerful tool for use in the terrestrial, coastal and marine environment, with applications
in sectors as diverse as transport and logistics to fisheries science and tourism and from disaster
management and conservation to planning and research.

This short ‘fast-track’ course will focus on practical applications of GIS. The course will be hands-on, giving the
participants the opportunity to gain GIS skills using a variety of data types. Participants will also gain
knowledge of specific applications such as visualisation techniques and Internet technologies. The course will
be run by the Coastal and Marine Resources Centre in conjunction with the Department of Geography, UCC.
Ideally, the participants will have good computer skills but do not need previous GIS experience.

The Course Target Audience

The course will include practicals and seminars
covering the following topics: Introduction to GIS;
Tables; Geo-Referencing and Digitising; Interpolation
and Integration; Buffering, Querying, Clipping &
Scripts; Web-Enabled GIS and Open Source Software;
Visualisation Techniques - 3D & 4D; and Metadata.
The course will run using ESRI GIS software, although
tutors also have MapInfo expertise.
This course is designed for technical staff,
researchers and industry professionals involved in
environmental management, remote sensing
applications, Water Framework Directive data
management, engineering, planning,
environmental consultancy, hydrography and
those from local Government agencies whose
remit includes data management.

CMRC Logistics Dept. of Geography

The Coastal and Marine Resources Centre
(CMRC) is a research centre within the
Environmental Research Institute of UCC. To
date, CMRC partnerships have involved
successful research collaborations with over
180 institutions from 25 countries. The Centre
currently has 30 full-time staff involved in
research, development, GIS service provision
and applied training.

The 2-day course costs 700
( 500 for registered students)
which includes a course folder
with handouts and other
materials, tea/coffee breaks, a
light lunch and a certificate of
completion.
The course will run from
9.30-5.00 each day.
The Department was one of the first academic
centres in Ireland to enter the GIS arena, having
acquired its first software in the mid 1980s and
has had GIS on its teaching curriculum in 1989.
Since then, it has built up a solid national and
international reputation for expertise in the
field. For the past 7 years they have delivered a
celebrated part-time Higher Diploma in GIS
that is aimed specifically at the needs of the
working professional.
