The Importance of Giving Back?

Welcome to autumn! Fall is a beautiful time in Busan! I hope you and your family are able to enjoy the season.
This is my last article in this series that expounds on the BIFS belief statements. Over the course of this series, we
have reflected on the central role of our students in the education process, how education at BIFS is a shared
responsibility, about what it means to be a non-denominational family school, a school that also is unified and
respectful in our diversity, and that provides the very best inquiry based relevant education for each student.
This week, I would like to focus on our belief that BIFS students are to give back through community service.
Why is this important?
Research highlights the importance of giving back through community service. Community service provides
students the authentic motivating experiences that transfers into their academics and gives opportunities for
students to integrate and elaborate their knowledge and skills. Students that participate in community service
strengthen their personal, interpersonal and social development. It also increases students motivation,
engagement and school attendance which leads to new perspectives and positive behaviors.
What does giving back look like at BIFS? Service at BIFS takes many forms. From individual student efforts to
take care of our environment to class service trips to other countries. Our goal is for each BIFS student to have a
multitude of meaningful service experience so that each child can experience the joy of giving back to others.
How can you partner with us to help give even more back?

Parent-Student-Teacher (3-Way) Conferences

We would like to invite you to a Parent-Student-Teacher (3-Way) Conference on Tuesday, October 20, from
8:30-5:00.
Why will we involve students in these conferences? As an IB school, our charge is to develop students who are
integrally involved in their own learning. Involving students in reflecting on their own strengths and areas for
growth is one way we support the development of the learner profile in each of our students. As stated by the IB
Education for a Better World brochure:

At the heart of all our programmes is the IB Learner Profile, a

long-term, holistic vision of education that underpins the IB

continuum of education and puts the student at the centre of
everything we do. The Learner Profile is the IB mission
statement in action and provides a set of learning behaviours
which aims to inspire, motivate and focus students, teachers
and the entire IB School community, uniting them in a
common purpose.

Because all students and teachers will be involved in conferences, October 20 will be set aside for these meetings
only -- no regular school sessions will be held on this day. Please adjust your familys schedule accordingly.
For our Ulsan and Goeje families, we will run buses to and from school at predetermined times. An email will be
sent to you which will explain the routes, times, and how to reserve space on the bus.
For Middle and High School families, all teachers will be located in the gym from 8:00-4:00 so you can stop by
to visit with teachers at any time during the day. Due to the number of students each teacher has, MS and HS
will not be scheduling individual conferences, but rather allowing for families to be flexible with their
conferences.
For Elementary families, including ELC, we ask you to schedule a 20 minute conference slot per teacher visited
(Homeroom, EAL, SEN, and Specialists). Click SchoolBookings.net to access the Conference Booking system and
enter event Code: BJTSK
Registrations will close at 8:30 on Monday, Oct 19 to allow teachers to prepare for the meetings
If you have several children in the elementary, please note that while there is no childcare on this day, siblings
are welcome to sit just outside the door with a book or game, or inside the siblings classroom during the
conference, if you prefer.

ABRSM Exams
ABRSM Music Theory Exams will be held here at school on Saturday November 7th, 2015 in C5.1 (5th floor Hall) at
2:00 pm.
All candidates should be here at school and ready for the exam by 1:45 pm.
ABRSM Practical Exams have been confirmed for Tuesday November 17th, 2015 in C5.5. (Middle and High school
building C, 5th floor).
The exams will start at 9:00 am and run throughout the school day. Each candidate has an individual exam time
that has already been shared with the candidates parents. We ask that all candidates take some time to warm
up and go through their exam pieces prior to their exam time.
As these exams can be demanding for some students, please make sure your children have a good nights rest
and a healthy breakfast.
The ABRSM visiting examiner is Mrs. Caroline Diffley. Mrs. Diffley was born in the Brighouse and Rastrick area of
Yorkshire, U.K. She attended Badminton School, Bristol, after which she went on to study the piano at the Royal
College of Music in London. While at the College she gained diplomas in both piano teaching and piano
performing; her teachers were Lamar Crowson, David Parkhouse, and Malcolm Binns. She also spent a term at
the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, studying with Guido Agosti and the famous pianist Arturo Benedetti
Michelangeli. As well as specialising in piano, she has also studied the recorder, viola and tuba with varying
degrees of success!
During a teaching career spanning four decades, she has taught in Kent (at the Kent Music School), in Oxford (at
the Dragon School), and widely in the South West. She taught piano at Wells Cathedral School and Dartington
College of Arts for twelve years, and is now a mentor and tutor at the South West Music School. She continues
to run a busy private teaching practice. Caroline is an ABRSM examiner and is a Music Medals moderator. She
has been a mentor on the CT ABRSM course and is currently a busy adjudicator for the British and International
Federation of Festivals. She has also published articles on various aspects of piano teaching and learning, and
was a member of the working party of A Common Approach 2002, published by Faber.
She has two grown up children and lives in Exeter with her husband, who is a professor of Italian.
Good luck to all our candidates!!!

NWEA MAP Testing for Grades 2 - 9

During October, children in grades 2 - 9 will take tests called Measures of Academic Progress (MAP). We give
MAP tests as a measure of individual student instructional levels, to measure individual academic growth from
year-to-year, and as a reflective tool on our programs in the areas of mathematics, reading, and language
usage.
MAP tests are unique in that they are computerized and adapt to be appropriate for each childs level of
learning. When taking a MAP test, the difficulty of each question is based on how well a student answers all of
the previous questions. As the student answers correctly, questions become more difficult. If the student answers
incorrectly, the questions become easier. In an optimal test, a student answers approximately half the items
correctly and half incorrectly. The final score is an estimate of the students achievement level. As a result, each
student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing.
Over the next few days, your child will spend a total of about three hours completing these tests. Following the
testing period, you will receive a report showing your childs growth. For more information on resources for
parents, we encourage you to download the Parent Toolkit here. The toolkit includes information on how the
MAP is run and scored, as well as tips for parents to support their child at home.
The following is excerpted from the toolkit.
Ways to help your child prepare for testing:
Meet with your childs teacher as often as needed to discuss his or her progress. Ask the teacher to
suggest activities for you and your child to do at home to help prepare for tests and improve your
childs understanding of schoolwork. Parents and teachers working together benefits students.
Provide a quiet, comfortable place for studying at home.
Make sure that your child is well rested on school days and especially the day of a test. Children who
are tired are less able to pay attention in class or to handle the demands of a test.
Give your child a well-rounded diet. A healthy body leads to a healthy, active mind.
Provide books and magazines for your child to read at home. By reading new materials, a child learns
new words that might appear on a test.

Image Rights Permission

Our assumption is that by joining the school parents give us their permission for any photos, videos, and audio
files featuring their child or themselves to be published on the school's website, blogs, and in other marketing
materials belonging to the school. Please notify Miyoung Kim at miyoungkim@bifskorea.org if you do not wish

Our students in Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2 went to a farm in Ulsan on Monday. Some of the activities
involved picking pears, digging for sweet potatoes, riding a tractor, and harvesting rice.
Students enjoyed eating Hobakjan (pumpkin pancake) and commented on how bumpy the tractor ride was.
They thought the fruit trees on the farm were very beautiful and enjoyed taking photos next to them. One
student exclaimed, Sweet potato digging is hard work!

Halloween Celebrations in Elementary

Grades KG-5:
On October the 30th from lunch time onward, the Student Council will be running a Halloween celebration for
Kindergarten to Grade 5. Students will have the opportunity to dress up, play games, and participate in a
Halloween parade.
In order for the day to be a success, it would be fantastic if all students could find or create a costume to wear.
They may choose to wear a Halloween costume, or another costume that isnt related, for example a Spiderman
or Fairy costume. Please do not choose costumes that contain fake weapons, such as guns, swords etc, as these
items will not be allowed at school.
In the morning, there will be a professional photographer taking photos of individual students and classes for
our Yearbook. Therefore, students are NOT to come to school in the morning dressed in their costumes.
Students will be given time to change into their costumes after lunch.
As part of the festivities, the Student Council would like to hold a Halloween-themed bake sale during lunch
time. All money raised will go towards running the event, and future Student Council events. If you would like to
contribute to the bake sale, please fill out the Google Form that was sent this week. -- Student Council, Mrs.
Melville and Miss. Toouli
ELC:
The ELC will have a small Halloween celebration in the morning on October 30. ELC students may come to
school in costumes, or change after arrival. Please send regular clothes in case your child wishes to change out
of their costume. The ELC students will have a variety of activities in the three classrooms, and will have
opportunities to work visit the different classrooms to see each others costumes and play together.

Learning about Learning and Thinking about Thinking

We were very fortunate to have Lance King at BIFS to work with students, staff, and parents this week. His
workshops talk about how we learn and the strategies we use to think through situations we encounter. The
overall workshop talked about resilience and having an inner strength. Lance has a great deal of experience
working in education and the presentations were OUTSTANDING!
During the workshops with students, Mr. King helped students look at patterns in the world. They noticed the
many patterns we see in numbers and also did an activity where we drew something by only looking at parts of
the image. The face that is drawn in the image below, was created in 5 different pieces starting at the top. The
students were only given part of the picture to focus on and they looked for patterns or shapes that they know.
The students also worked on what to do when they struggle or deal with situations that they may not be
successful at. Students learned to juggle (some a little more successful than others) and then talked about
strategies we can use in our daily lives to help us overcome barriers. A phrase that I heard quite often was "It is
not that you can't do it, it is just that you haven't done it yet!"
The staff and parent sessions had a similar focus to what the students encountered in their lessons. Mr. King
helped teachers and parents with strategies for assisting students with this inner strength. It was a wonderful
learning opportunity for all of us and I hope you were able to access this knowledge in some way. If you are a
parent of a 6th, 11th, or 12th-grade student, be sure to ask them if you can see their work or talk about their
insights.

SKAC HS Volleyball Final @ BIFS, October 5th

Congratulations to the boys and girls varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams!!! Both teams competed in the

SKAC Volleyball Championships held on October 5th and BIFS. As last years defending champions, both teams
had to battle all day long to defend their titles. Teams played head to head with teams from Handong
International School, Daegu International School, Global Prodigy academy and Busan Foreign School.
Both the girls and the boys swept the tournament going undefeated and winning the final match. It should also
be mentioned here that our JV teams also deserve huge amount of credit as they both placed in the top two of
their pools and competed in the semifinals. A great job was done by all schools and all student athletes. Thank
you to all of our coaches who make these events a success: Ceejay Jader (Varsity Girls), Martina Plicka and Jamie

Counselors Corner
It has been a busy week on the college counseling side of my job
as a high school counselor. On Monday, October 5, I traveled up
to Seoul to represent BIFS at the Linden Tour Reverse Fair.
Universities present at the fair included The University of
Maryland, Central Penn College, Central College, Fairleigh
Dickinson University, Felician College, George Mason University,
Marymount California University, Purdue University, University of
California at Santa Barbara, University of California at San Diego,
University of La Verne, University of Pittsburgh, University of
Missouri at Kansas City, Middle Tennessee State University,
University of Redlands, University of Washington, and the
University of Connecticut.
October 6 saw BIFS hosting the first UK University Fair at BIFS. Represented at the fair were Arts University
Bournemouth, Bournemouth University, Cardiff University, Falmouth University, Goldsmiths University of
London, and the University of Sheffield. The fair was a success and was attended by several BIFS students and
their parents. The universities also hosted two information sessions concerning the personal statement for the
UCAS application and how to put together a portfolio for application to art related programs of study.
