FOX515 with Ethernet over SDH services

NEBRO adds advanced LAN/WAN functionality

Broadband Ethernet services

New Ethernet Services
With the availability of the NEBRO unit
the FOX multiservice access platform
now offers further extended broadband
capabilities. Cost-effective Fast Ethernet
and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity is now
combined with the well-known reliability
and manageability of SDH networks.
This makes it ideal for bandwidth intensive applications like corporate Internet
access, office LAN interconnections, and
video over IP applications. Furthermore,
NEBRO can offer new services for
SCADA system related tasks.
How does it work?
The Ethernet frames are encapsulated in
SDH by using GFP and then transported
through the SDH network in a VC-12 or
VC-3 group. VCAT and LCAS enhance
the flexibility of bandwidth usage and
traffic protection based on the traditional
SDH protection schemes in combination with LAN/WAN based restoration
mechanisms.
Apart of the physical Ethernet interfaces
on NEBROs front side, the card supports
eight Logical WAN Ports (LWP) with
2 Mbps granularity toward the FOX
SDH trunk interfaces. These LWP can
be used to carry individual VLANs
with guaranteed bandwidth per service
or tagged VLANs sharing bandwidth
according CoS to definitions.
Standard Interfaces
NEBRO offers on its front side four 10/100
BaseT interfaces and two cages for optical
SFP plug-in modules. Having electrical
and optionally optical interfaces makes
the NEBRO suitable for a wide range of
mission critical applications. NEBRO fits
perfectly for utility networks with their
high expectations and commitments to
quality and reliability.

The electrical Ethernet interfaces (RJ-45

connectors) are implemented according
to IEEE Std 802.3. The two cages for plugin SFP modules comply with the industry
standard multi-source agreement.
The Ethernet over SDH transport using
GFP and VCAT opens new horizons in
terms of interoperability and standardization. They permit transparent operation
with legacy SDH equipment as well as
interworking with any other standard
compliant equipment.
Seamless Migration
The new NEBRO plug-in module is
fully compatible with the existing base
of FOX515 and FOX512 installations.
Therefore, FOX network elements can
be smoothly upgraded to support new
broadband Ethernet services all in
perfect combination with the traditional
services like teleprotection, emergency
phones, and SCADA. Using TDM
technology (PDH/SDH) on the trunkside assures the continuity of time and
mission critical services.
One Management System
The management of the various types
of services and transport functions is
all centralized under the umbrella of
ABBs Network Management System.
This enables the user to act in a familiar
environment, reduces further training
efforts, and accelerates the provisioning
of Ethernet / IP connections over the
valuable SDH network assets.

The diagram above shows details

of LANs for various Ethernet-based
applications connecting to NEBRO.
Packets are switched with a userdefinable capacity (n x 2 Mbps) to LWP
and afterwards mapped according to
GFP to concatenated VC-12s. These
VC-12s are transmitted via FOXs SDH
trunk card and the fibre-optic backbone
to remote stations (II & III). VC-12s of
one concatenated stream (e.g. the orange
Video stream) may travel on different
paths to their destination.

To establish a distributed LAN with a

logical ring structure (e.g. the blue VoIP
VLAN), the VC-12s of the related
concatenated stream are terminated in
each stations; the extracted Ethernet
frames are switched either to the
corresponding physical Ethernet port
or directly to the LWP that carries the
connection to the next station.
Traffic protection can be achieved either
on an Ethernet / RSTP base or with much
faster SDH ring and/or 1+1 protection.
