Use of English Part 1

For questions 1-12, read the text below and decide which answer (A, B, C or D) best fits each gap.

Voluntary Work
Lots of young people want to travel and see for themselves what life is like in cultures very different from their own.
And once they have visited a new region, and 1 to know its way of life, many of them feel that they would like to
2
something back, by helping local people. The result has been the development of what is sometimes 3 .. as
voluntourism.
The idea is nothing new. It has been possible to 4 a holiday or a travel experience with voluntary work for a long
time. Some people choose to do work in the area of nature conservation, 5 others prefer to work with local
people, 6 teachers for example, or acting as sports coaches
with local children.
What is new, 7 , is the choice of both destinations and types of
project which are available. A number of companies have spotted
the 8 demand for such trips and have specialised in 9
them up for people who might not have had the resources to do so
on their own. In this way, young peoples dreams of not only visiting
other cultures, but also of being useful to them, can 10 . a
reality. 11 .. a recent survey, around 50,000 British people now 12
part in such schemes each year.

Reading Part 1
You are going to read an extract from a novel. For questions 1-7, choose the answer (A, B, C or D) which you
think fits best according to the text.

line 12

line 37

As Chelsea walked out of the school gates, she felt a sudden rush of adrenaline. So that
was it it was over. She could see some of her classmates hugging each other, some in
tears, some looking regretful. She had no time for such emotions. It wasnt as if they were
all leaving town theyd be meeting up often enough just not in that building.
The school principal had just given them a very predictable lecture on the theme of
success. Shed stressed upon them the need to make the most of their lives and uphold
the reputation of the school. Chelsea wondered if those two things were always the same.
She rather fancied making a success of her life in a way that would do the opposite at
least in the principals eyes.
Chelsea had never shone academically. She was, it seemed, destined to be average,
not unnoticed by her teachers, but not singled out for praise either. But then why should
she be? Shed noticed that some of her friends played up to the teachers, showing how
keen they were so as to get more attention. She didnt blame them, but had no such
ambitions herself.
But success could come in other ways. Maybe she would become a celebrity made
famous overnight by a television appearance, or if her name became linked romantically to
that of a star. Chelsea was a fan of reality TV, but had never felt the urge to take part
herself. And anyway, she didnt feel that fame and success were one and the same thing.
On the contrary, she was looking for some other kind of success in her life.
When she got home, the house was pleasantly empty. She wondered if she was meant
to be getting the meal for her family, then remembered that they would all be out that
theyd agreed to do their own thing. It was a shame, cooking was something she didnt
mind doing. Shed said something about an end-of-year party with her mates and her
mother had smiled pleased to think that her daughter was joining in.
She went to her bedroom and pulled out the magazine article. Shed read it a number of
times and kept it folded in the back of her dictionary for safe keeping. Her mother would
never look there. It wasnt that the article was something to hide it wasnt offensive or
unsuitable in any way. It was just that she had a habit of seeking out anything that made
the place look untidy, and disposing of it without checking what it was.
The principals words had brought the contents of the article back to her mind in a
startling way. What was success? Matt Allen was her kind of hero. According to the article,
Matt had spent his twenties doing odd jobs in restaurants and factories, making enough
money to fund his passion, which was music. One summer, needing to make some money,
hed bought an ice cream cart and sold ice cream on the beach.
At the end of the season, he was left with a lot of stock, so he announced on a college
radio show that he would be giving it away. Quite a crowd gathered in the college car park
and queued for up to half an hour for the very ordinary ices. Even this didnt spoil the fun,
however, and everyone left smiling. Matt realised that this was what he wanted to do with
his life and had been doing it ever since.
Matt now travels to rock music festivals in different places in an ice cream van. Once
there, he gives away ice creams to whoever wants one. He has made a name for himself,
become a feature of these events, has even managed to make a living out of it although
Chelsea wasnt quite sure how something to do with sponsorship she imagined. She felt
inspired every time she read the article, and now after hearing the principals opinions, was
even more so. This was the kind of success she wanted.

A Good Night Out

We spent four reporters out to sample the delights
of a night out in our town
A Amy
It was my first visit to the
multiplex. The type of movies I
like tend to show at the smaller
independent places, but I tried not
to have preconceived ideas. In fact,
the place had some definite plus
points. Reserving a seat on the
website was easy and I was able to
see a couple of trailers for other
films. There was quite a good
choice of different films on offer
actually, and though very little of it
was to my taste, one of the blockbusters came with
rave reviews so I went for that. Once inside screen
four, where my choice was being shown, I was amazed
at the cosy intimate feel that the compact sloping
seating managed to achieve. A good architect had
obviously been at work. My view was not impaired by
the heads of those in front and my knees werent hard
against the seat in front.

C Clare
I had never been to see a show on
ice before, so I didnt really know
what to expect. Youre told to wear
a coat, of course, and I was glad Id
had the warning because its a big
expanse of ice youre right next to.
The building itself is extremely
large and although the show uses
the whole of the arena, there were
plenty of empty seats on the night
I went, so the atmosphere wasnt
that great. The place attracts a
mixed crowd, more so than Id imagined, and there
was a nice laid-back feeling in the foyer as we waited
to go in beforehand. The waiting area is a bit cramped,
however, and I wasnt tempted by anything on offer at
the bar, though the prices seemed reasonable enough,
if coke and popcorn are your thing. As it was so cold,
it would have been nice if they had had some hot
snacks as well as cold ones.

B Barry
I remember going to The Grand when I was a kid but
then I hadnt actually been along since its
refurbishment. Clearly quite a lot has been invested in
bringing the place into the 21st century, but I was
surprised how dated it still looked inside. Id booked
on the Internet, so it was a bit of a let down finding I
still had to queue. My seat upstairs in the gallery was
not cheap, and the view of the stage was not exactly
brilliant. I think the economics of the theatre must
rule out adequate seating. I had to fight with the
person sitting next to me to keep my elbows on the
armrest, and I couldnt really relax. The show I saw
was a musical, which was fun, but the sound didnt
exactly fill the place, and at times I couldnt really
make out what was being said in the dialogue between
the songs. Id also suggest taking your own drinks and
chocolates those from the bar cost almost as much as
the seat.

D Darius
There is something about the idea of a comedy club
that had always put me off. A whole evening listening
to people telling jokes didnt seem like a very exciting
prospect to me, but I was mistaken. I guess theres
something about being in a group of people that
makes you laugh even if the jokes arent that funny
anyway thats what I found myself doing. The place
itself is not what youd call smart, and could do with a
good lick of paint, but it attracts a predictably young
crowd and so its quite lively. The only drawback is
that its a bit off the beaten track though, so you need
to either drive or take a taxi. We took a taxi, which was
a bit of a nuisance, and a little expensive, and I was
amazed to find theres no chance to book any taxis
online. Anyway, all in all Id recommend it for a fun
night out, even if Im not sure whether Ill be going
back myself.
