MiFiisawireless3Gaccesspoint,whichallowsseveraldevicestousea3GconnectionoverWireless.
TheHuaweiE585issoldbyThree(http://www.three.co.uk/Mobile_Broadband/MiFi)intheUK,and
ofcoursecomeslockedtothenetwork.
Therearedierentversionsofthesoftwareonthedevice,butluckily(atthetimeofwriting),the
unlockcodeisstoredunencryptedinthefirmwareinallcurrentversions.Youjusthavetoreadthe
codeourfromthedevice.
So,ontotheunlockprocedure.Youwillneedeitherone,ortwopiecesofsoftware(availablebelow),
dependingonthefirmwareversion.Newdevicesrequireoneextrastepandtheextrasoftware,which
isfree.
Firstly,thisprocedurecomeswithoutwarranty.Thechancesofyoubreakinganythingareslim,but
undertakeeverythingatyourownrisk.
Whatyouwillneed:
AMiFidevice,lockedtoThree(oranotherprovider,howeverthishasonlybeentestedonThree)
PSASAvailableHERE(http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11046179/E585/psas.zip)
DCUnlocker(forthenewersoftwareversions)AvailableHERE(http://dl.dropbox.com
/u/11046179/E585/dcunlocker_client1.00.0664.exe)
NotepadbuiltintoWindows
Step1,requiredforallversions:
Thefirstthingyouneedtodo,isplugintheMiFidevicetoyourPCusingaUSBcable.Makesurethat
nothingisconnectedtotheMiFiviawirelessforallofthefollowingsteps.LetWindowsautomatically
installthecommunicationdrivers.IfAutorunisdisabled,manuallyruntheautorun.exefileonthe
virtualCDdrivethatappearswhenyouplugtheMiFiin.Thesedriversarerequiredforthefollowing
steps.
Confirmthedriversareallinstalledbyunplugging,andpluggingthedevicebackinatleastonce.When
thedriversandsoftwareareinstalled,putadierentSIMintotheMiFi&turniton.Plugitintoyour
PCagainusingtheUSBcable.
Atthispoint,aquickcheckindevicemanager(clickstartandtypedevmgmt.mscintotherun/search

box)shouldshowsomeportsrelatedtotheMiFiwhichappearanddisappearwhenyouplug/unplug
thedevice.
Makesurethattheconnectionmanagerisntrunning(itmaynotbe,butcheckthesystemtraynearthe
clockjustincase).ClicktheSafelyremovehardwareiconinthetraytoo,anddisconnectthevirtual
CDdrive.
Step2,requiredbeforestep3,fornewerfirmwareversionsonly.Trystep3FIRST,andcomeback
hereifyoucantreadtheEFSdata.Ifyoujustreceivedthedevice,thechancesarethatthisstepwill
berequired,asyoursoftwarewilllikelybethenewversion.(1026.11.64.18.505sp01isanexampleofthe
newfirmwareversion)
InstalltheDCUnlockerclient.Afterithasinstalled,rightclicktheshortcutandchooseRunas
administratorifusingVista/Win7.XPuserscanjustdoubleclickit.
WhentheDCUnlockersoftwareopens,clickthesearch(magnifyingglassbutton).Afterafew
seconds,youshouldhavethedetailsofyourdevicelistedinthesoftware,asshownbelow:

Ifyoudontgetafullreading,checkagainthatdeviceison,theconnectionmanagersoftwareisnt
running,andthattheportsareshowingindevicemanager.Havingalreadyunlockedmydeviceusing
thismethod,theSIMLockstatusaboveshowsunlocked
Leavethesoftwareopenjustasitis,andmoveontothenextstep.
Step3,readingthefirmwarefromthephone.
InstallthePSAS(PhoneSystemAnalysisSoftware)toolfromthelinkabove.Runitasadministrator
fromtherightclickmenu.
ChooseHardwareForensicsfromthemenuatthetop,andselectUseMobilePorts
FromthedropdownIchosetheselectedoptioninblue,howeversomehavereportedtheother
Com10optionworkedforthem.Theportnumbermaynotbethesameforyou,butyoushouldbe
abletoidentifytheMiFideviceportforyourselfprettyeasily.Itwillbeoneofamaximum3options.
Forthebaudrate,115200,&57600allowedmetoreadthefilesystem,butbewarnedthatittakes
around5minutesorsotocomplete.
NowclicktheDiagPorttab,andclicktheSendbutton.Thisshouldreturnaresultsimilartothis:

Ifyoudontgetaresponsesimilartothis,youmayneedtogothroughStep2.IfyoufollowedStep2
withsuccess,trychangingtheport,orthebaudrateandtryagain.
NextchooseReadEFS&Usealternatemethodinthesoftwareasbelow:
Clicktheletsgobutton,andchooseafilenameandlocationforthefirmwaredumpthatyouwill
locateeasily(likeDesktop).
ThesoftwarewillsayPleaseWaitandtakeseveralminutestocomplete.Bepatient.Whenthe
processiscomplete,successfullyreadEFSwilbedisplayed.Ifyouhavetroubleandthesoftware
crashes,trysettingthelinesto250,butthisonlyworksforolderfirmwarewiththeunlockcodethat
isntattheend.Newfirmware(SP01intheversion)needsthewholefile.Thewholefileisaround
742kb.

Step4,findingtheunlockcode
Forthisstep,youwillneedthefileyoureadfromtheMiFi,andnotepadtoreadthefile.Openthefile
inNotepadClickstartandtypenotepadintotherun/searchbox).Itmaytakeawhileforthefileto
open.
Ifyouhavetheearlierfirmwareversions,thecodecanbefoundbyusingthefindfeatureunderthe
notepadeditmenu.SearchforPST,thenumberafterPSTistheunlockcode.
Forlaterfirmware,thecodeislocatedattheandofthefile,scrolltothebottomofthefilewithnotepad
maximised,asshownbelow(thecodeis54951935inthiscase)
Step6,Enteringthecode
ConnecttotheMiFiwithnootherinternetconnectionsonyourPC,andtheSimlockpageshouldshow
up.Simplyenterthecode.
Alternatively,typehttp://192.168.1.1/simlock.asp(http://192.168.1.1/simlock.asp)intotheaddressbar
andpressenter.
Ifthatfails,youcanfollowtheinstructionsandusethesoftwareHERE
(http://virginmobile.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/444/~/unlockingyoure5832mobile
broadbandmodem).
Thedevicewillnowrebootandisunlocked.
YouwillneedtocreateaprofileforthenetworkprovidersandinputtheAPN(includingThreeagain)
toconnecttotheinternet.

Thanksverymuchforyoureort,workedforme!Ifoundadditionalinstructionsonthenetthat
explainedthatthecodecouldalsosometimesbefoundnearthestringLTP(withoutquotes).It
turnedoutthatitwas,*and*itwasadjacenttothePSTstringaswell.Sothisprovidedauseful
checkIhadthecoderight,beforeusingupanyofmypreciousunlockattempts.

notnearPSTorLTPstring.
AllunlockednowitdoesnworkyetwithanO2sim,evenaftersettingtheprofile,itsays
ConnectingandthenDisconnected.
Anyadvice?CoulditbetheSim?
IwilltrywithwithotherSimsondierentprovidersandpostback.

littlewhileagosoIcantrememberexactlybutthePSTsequencewasntwhereitshouldhave
been.Otherdevicesuseothermethodsandyoumayhavetogoviathephonecompanyandpay.
Caveat:Ifsomethinggoeswrongitcanlockthedevice,youonlygetsomanygoes.Foranyone
buyingnewitsprobablyeasiertobuyonereadyunlocked.[]
