TH Summary

The Holy Longing

SUMMARY
God asks us to act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with our God.
To act justly requires us to know what social justice is and how to apply it in our
lives as Christians. Justice is not private charity. Justice means going beyond our
capabilities to try to solve the problem instead of just thinking of a short-term
solution to the problem. It is not enough simply to be a good person within our
private lives. Ultimately, our goal should be to change the SYSTEM and not just
the event. Instead of just looking at abortion on the surface, we should dive
deeper into the fact that we live in a system where men and women engage in
intercourse without the assurance of being committed to each other or without
them wanting a child. Another example could be that of the poor. Instead of
knowing what we can do for them short term, we must try to change capitalism.
The system of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.
REFLECTION
The reading focuses on defining what social justice is and the impact it
has on society. We should change the worldview we have. I think the problem
nowadays is that everyone wants to help but they do it short-term. We need more
people to think about how to change the world long-term. We need people to be
more concerned about changing the system than just putting on a good front to
show that they are helping. I feel like this is an important trait that politicians
should have because to change the world, to make it a better place, requires a
change in system.

Chapter 2: Learning Spontaneity

SUMMARY
Everyone talks about freedom to the point where it is so ironic that we live
in a world which is haunted by a strange lack of freedom. More and more people
have a sense of entrapmentmentally, physically, economically etc. The reading
tells us that we have our choices and Christianity gives us the freedom to
choose. But what really is it to be free? Human lies are so complex that we make
our own loopholes to skirt away to do what is morally right. However, there are
also times when we need to choose from very ambiguous teachings. For
example, in the case of divorce, if you meet someone you love, do you marry
again? Or in the case of abortion, if you were raped, can you perform abortion?
These choices give us freedom but to be truly free, we need to be conscious that
we need to do whats morally right, we need to do what is selfless.

REFLECTION
I think I agree with the author that right now, with the many choices we
have we feel so constrained to the point that we do not feel free anymore. We
lose our sense of freedom because all of us are focused on having the best or
having the perfect choice. But we forget that there is no best choice for us. The
best choice is the one where we become selfless.
