Power Controller Unit incorporates a microprocessor which carries out automatic self checking,
continually monitors all readings received and indicates operational errors for the ships personnel.
Data received can also be stored for output later onto computers or hard copy log sheets.
There is also a built-in facility for connecting the system directly to the ships computer or into a separate
data logger/chart recorder.
Our ICCP systems can be provided for any size of vessel. A new
design is now available for small, specialized craft, such as tugs, fishing
boats, supply boats, ice breakers and FPSO, whose cathodic protection
requirements can be more demanding and require specialized system.
In icebreakers, for example, exposed galvanic anodes on surface of the
hull would be extremely vulnerable to damage or loss, particularly in the
bow section. Coatings on icebreakers are also quickly damaged,
exposing large areas of bare steel which require high current densities
for adequate protection. Wilson Walton Koreas specifically designed
impressed current systems can meet these demands. In FPSO, for
another example, which require very high grade system and longer
lifetime as 20~25 years.

Marine fouling and biofouling commonly occur in Seawater circulation systems. This involves
the Establishment of marine plants and animals, and Bacterial growths. These fouling
organisms enter the system in microscopic and macroscopic form, eg. Larvae and spats, settle
and develop into adult forms wherever favourable environmental condition exist.

Sacrificial Anodes

SHAFT gROuNDINg DEvICE

Traditional chemical methods of water treatment to prevent fouling are now less favoured.
Particularly, Chlorine accelerates corrosion rates, usually by causing pitting attack on steel, is
environmentally unacceptable and treatment requires continuous monitoring and control.

WWK's MGPS employs a variation of the well established impressed current Cathodic
Protection principle. Direct current applied to the Copper anode(s) releases a controlled
quantity of Copper ions into the system to create an environment in which primary forms of
marine life do not grow current applied to the aluminium anode releases a floc, a precipitate of
aluminium hydroxide.

Operation
The millivoltmeter normally reads 250mV full scale. If needed to read the enlarged scales of below 50mV,
indicate proper grounding, If readings are above 50mV, clean the surface of slip-ring and the contact face
of brush with a clean cloth. The millivoltmeter will read 0 when shaft is at rest because of the current
entering the propeller will return to the hull through the bearing and turbine reduction rears.A millivoltmeter
reading of 0 when shaft is turning at sea indicates a faulty millivoltmeter installation. Checks for

WWK's MGPS is automatic, requires minimal maintenance and is environmentally friendly.

Mussels are not killed by the system. The environment it creates prevents them settling or
developing. A further benefit of WWK's MGPS is that potable water distillation plants can be
operated without interruption.

connections of all the terminals and tightness of all the fittings are required.

Maintenance
This grounding assembly should be checked every seven days for cleanliness. If there has been a buildup of oil on the slip-ring face this should be removed with a degreaser. Inspect and clean the brushes and

down springs on the brushes should be adjusted to ensure good electrical contact.

Cathodic protection can be also applied if the metal to be protected is coupled to the negative pole of a
direct current (DC) source, while the positive pole is coupled to an auxiliary anode. Since the driving
voltage is provided by the DC source there is no need for the anode to be more active than the structure
to be protected. In fact, it is possible to use anodes which can remain
inert (non consumable) during impressed cathodic protection. This type
of anode supports other anodic reactions on their surfaces. In
environments where water and chloride ions are present, chlorine
evolution and oxidation of water are possible. It is also possible to use
semi-consumable anodes such as graphite and high silicon iron or
consumable anodes such as scrap iron, for example.
All items to be protected shall be electrically connected and should
have a welded or brazed connection to an anode. For bolted or
clamped assemblies without an all welded brazed electrical grounding,
the electric resistance should be less than 0.10 ohm. Coating on
contact surfaces shall be removed prior to assembly.
In the impressed current CP, the large electrochemical is formed

safety caps. Such anodes will have a design life coinciding with dry dock schedules.
In-board fitments in the pipeline or in strainers when anodes can be replaced at any time are
also possible. The anodes are all wired to one or more common control panels that can also
have connections to the pump controlling the water flow.
The worldwide nature of WWKs operation means that Anfomatic anti-fouling systems can be
designed and fitted to vessels wherever in the world dry docking is available. Whilst installation
is a straight forward procedure, WWK staff are always on hand to provide specialized advice
and to assist with commissioning.

Features and benefits

Corrosion in Sea water

Seawater systems are used by many industries such as shipping, offshore oil and gas production, power
plants and coastal industrial plants. The main use of seawater is for cooling purposes but it is also used
for fire fighting, oil field water injection and for desalination plants. The corrosion problems in these
systems have been well studied over many years, but despite published information on materials behavior
in seawater, failures still occur. Most of the elements that can be found on earth are present in seawater,
at least in trace amounts. However, eleven of the constituents alone account for 99.95% of the total
solutes, chloride ions being by far the largest constituent.

Instruments

Simple installation.
Pressure tested safety cofferdams
Reliable, automatic operation with minimal attention from the crew.
Complete protection against biofouling.
Reduced corrosion.
Minimal power requirements.
Modular electronic control panel using one module per flow line.
Easy system expansion by adding modules.
Anode save feature controls current to the anode based on there being or not being flow in the pipeline.
This considerably increases anode life when flow is intermittent.

Dissolved oxygen, the principal gas present in water, is responsible for costly replacement of piping and
equipment by corrosive attack on metals with which it comes in contact. The origin of all water supply is
moisture that has been evaporated from land masses and oceans and subsequently precipitated from the
atmosphere. Depending on weather conditions, this may fall in the form of rain, snow, sleet or hail.
As it falls, this precipitation contacts gases comprising the atmosphere and suspended particulates in the
form of dust, industrial smoke and fumes, and volcanic dust and gases.

Anti-Fouling Cu Anodes

Soil corrosion is a complex phenomenon, with a multitude of variables involved. Chemical reactions
involving almost each of the existing elements are known to take place in soils, many of which are not yet
fully understood. The relative importance of variables changes for different materials, making a universal
guide to corrosion impossible. Variations in soil properties and characteristics across three dimensions
can have a major impact on corrosion of buried structures.

These anodes are widely used. HSCI anodes contain about 14.5% silicon and certain alloys have 4.5% chromium.
Chromium has now replaced molybdenum as an alloying element in this type of anode. The high silicon content ensures
that the alloy forms a protective film containing silicon dioxide, SiO2.
A prerequisite for the formation of this film is that the anode must initially corrode during the first few hours of operation.
The mechanism of this passivating film is not well understood.
The high electrical conductivity of the film is believed to be due to the presence of iron oxides.
Silicon dioxide is highly resistant to acids but it is readily dissolved in alkaline conditions.
High Silicon Cast Iron anodes are extremely hard and cannot be machined easily.
They are generally cast and then stress relieved by annealing.
Although brittle these anodes have superior abrasion and erosion characteristics compared to graphite

Type

Engineering Service

HSCI Anode Standard Composition

Sacrificial Anodes

High Silicon Cast Iron anodes are widely used usually in conjunction with carbonaceous
backfills in soils.
They have also found limited use in marine and freshwater environments. The maximum
operating current density is determined by the type of alloy and the environment.
For instance, in groundbeds with backfills the current density is limited to between 10 and
20 A m-2 because of problems caused by gas entrapment.
In marine environments, a high iron chromium anode can be operated up to 50 A m-2. As
for graphite, the maximum operating voltage is limited by excessive consumption and
brittleness of the material.
The consumption rate of these anodes is influenced by the operating current density and
the nature of the environment. Generally, a lower current
density reduces the consumption rate. Wastage rates range
from 0.10 to 0.50 kg A-1 y-1. Sulfate ions in particular have
been noted to enhance the dissolution rate of these
materials.

Hybrid System for Cathodic Protection for

Complex Concrete Structures
Contrary to common belief, concrete itself is a complex composite material. It has low strength when loaded in tension and
hence it is common practice to reinforce concrete with steel, for improved tensile mechanical properties.
Concrete structures such as bridges, buildings, elevated highways, tunnels, parking garages, offshore oil platforms, piers and
dam walls all contain reinforcing steel (rebar). The principal cause of degradation of steel reinforced structures is corrosion
damage to the rebar embedded in the concrete.

Sound concrete is an ideal environment for steel but the increased use of deicing salts and the increased concentration of carbon
dioxide in modern environments principally due to industrial pollution, has resulted in corrosion of the rebar becoming the primary
cause of failure of this material. The scale of this problem has reached alarming proportions in various parts of the world.

The two most common causes of reinforcement corrosion are

- localized breakdown of the passive film on the steel by chloride ions.
- general breakdown of passivity by neutralization of the concrete, predominantly by reaction with atmospheric carbon dioxide.

SACRIFICIAL
ANODES

SACRIFICIAL ANODES

Introduction to Corrosion in Concrete

why Hybrid Cathodic Protection System

When a concrete structure is often exposed to deicing salts, salt splashes, salt spray, or seawater, chloride ions from these will
slowly penetrate into the concrete, mostly through the pores in the hydrated cement paste. The chloride ions will eventually
reach the steel and then accumulate to beyond a certain concentration level, at which the protective film is destroyed and the
steel begins to corrode, when oxygen and moisture are present in the steel-concrete interface.
Installations & construction

Hybrid Cathodic Protection System-using titanium mesh anodes -provides the ultimate and permanent solution to stopping
reinforcing steel corrosion in the structures, as long as associated rectifiers and electrical wiring are properly maintained.
Electrochemical chloride extraction provides an alternative rehabilitation method for stopping steel corrosion in contaminated
concrete, albeit less permanently. This alternative has the advantage of having no rectifier or wiring to maintain after the
treatment.

Instruments

We offers the MAGNOA high potential magnesium anode.

The MAGNOA anode is manufactured from high quality, primary magnesium
under strict, state of the art production techniques, anode chemistry, testing
and certification.
Production techniques and chemical composition insure that the MAGNOA
produces a driving potential that exceeds other sacrificial anodes, such as
standard potential magnesium, aluminum or zinc. As a result, the MAGNOA
can produce more protective DC current for cathodic protection purposes.
As normally required, the anode is packaged in a cloth bag with a prepared
backfill mixture that works to maintain moisture around the anode and lowers
the anode to earth resistance.

Installations & construction

In cathodic protection, the most widely used sacrificial anodes are magnesium anodes. When high potential magnesium
anodes are required for high current applications. Magnesium has an equilibrium potential of -2.61V vs. SCE and
therefore theoretically can provide a very large driving voltage. However, practical measurements indicate relatively
more noble corrosion potentials probably due to the electrochemical inefficiency of the metal as a sacrificial anode. The
low efficiency (50-60%) has been attributed to hydrogen evolution at local cathodes and complex surface chemistry at
the anode surface.
The theoretical current capacity for a magnesium anode is approximately 2200 Ah kg-1 whereas actual measured
values are in the range of 1200 Ah kg-1.
Alloying elements (Al, Zn, Mn) have been added to reduce the rapid activation of magnesium. Magnesium alloy anodes
because of their large driving voltage are principally used in soils, water tanks, and similar high resistance media. In high
conductivity environments, such as seawater, magnesium anodes are generally not recommended because of risk of
overprotection and high consumption rate.
