DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:
The project will develop a training program for industrial safety in Jordan to assist in meeting the requirements of
Jordanian national legislation. Providing a suitable bases for more advanced or specialized training models,
technical assistance will provide sufficient flexibility to allow for both in-house and external delivery models.
Environmental protection will be taken as an integral component of personal safety through the development of the
framework required to train safety officers, I.e. training of trainers, development of resources, materials, and the
procurement of required capital equipment. The project will result in improved safety conditions of employees and
the workplace in Jordanian industry. It will also allow flexibility for adjustment to anticipated future legislative
requirements.

DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES PROVIDED:
Lakeland College and its Canadian partners undertook this project with their partner institutions in Jordan, in order to
increase their capacity to respond to Jordan's human resource development needs. The College provides education
and training to plan and implement sustainable human resource development activities in partnership with the
overseas participants. The College provides administrative, coordination and management services including:
project planning, implementation and monitoring.
DESCRIPTION OF RESULTS:
(Individual Results)- Developing country personnel were trained to utilize the DACUM process to develop an industry
safety officer competency profile; OSHI and other VTC personnel (approximately 10) improved skills in curriculum
development to the level of major topics using the competency profiles; VTC/OSHI management and staff enhanced
skills in Health and Safety Program Management, Administration and Marketing; six OSHI instructors gained
Canadian field experience with a safety officer, were able to apply and relate real situations in instruction;OSHI
administrators improved knowledge regarding testing of personal protective equipment.
(Institutional Results)OSHI wasable to develop better curriculum specific to Industry Safety Officer program;OSHI
improved ability to deliver courses on how to develop and manage industrial health and safety programs; OSHI
improved ability to provide a more practical approach to activities pertinent to the role and responsibilities of an
industry safety officer; OSHI improved systems in program management and student selection.
(Clients Results) Students received training necessary to succeed in the Industrial Safety milieu as a result of more
directed program;Industry received institute graduates whose employment skills will provide increased benefits to
their company having taken a validated program; industry received graduates able to carry out training in a more
effective and cost efficient manner while also meeting their regulatory requirements; students within industry
received better service in their training as safety officers.

Government and Society Changes


- Jordanian government has developed new Labour health and safety regulation. Canadian project personnel have
had some impact on the direction taken. The Social Security Department (incorporates aspects of workers'
compensation) plans to restructure their system as a direct result of input from this project.
- More women are attending workshops/seminars/training courses. Improved receptions to ideas of women
instructors/students. Women becoming more aware of both on and off the job health and safety issues.
- Jordanian government inspectors more knowledgeable of subjects that are governed by Labour Regulations.
