Merriam, Sharon B. and Ralph G. Brocke=. The Profession and Prac8ce of Adult
Educa8on. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 1997. Print.
Merriam and Brocke=, both scholars in the area of adult educa8on, make a point of discussing in
detail what counts as adult educa8on, how it has evolved over the years, and how the values
and beliefs of individuals and society determine which goals and purposes are considered
important in adult educa8on. They stress that adult educa8on must be dis8nguished from adult

Adult Literacy Teaching Careers, Jobs and Employment Informa8on. 8 February 2010.
Web. 7 February 2014.
Note: The author(s) for this ar8cle is not available due to the instability due to the instability of
the WWW. There are many part 8me teachers who teach adult literacy and remedial and selfenrichment classes for which they receive no benets, much like the unpaid volunteers who
teach the same courses. But a rise in the popula8on of limited English speakers is expected to
create many paying job opportuni8es for English as a second language teachers and adult
literacy teachers.
Wri8ng Instruc8on in American Colleges The Commitment to Educa8onal Quality.
Source: Conference on college Composi8on and Communica8on (CCCC), October
1999. Web. 9 February 2014.

The Conference on College Composi8on and Communica8on (CCCC) claims that our democracy
demands ci8zens who can read cri8cally and write clearly and cogently. They argue that in order
to produce ci8zens who can read cri8cally and write clearly and cogently, we need the highest
quality of instruc8on, but with the marginaliza8on of postsecondary rhetoric and composi8on
specialists/teachers, providing quality wri8ng instruc8on is highly unlikely.
Pooley, Robert C., University of Wisconsin. The Scholarly and Professional Role of The
Specialist in the Teaching of English. 9 February 2010. Web. 13 February 2014.
Robert C. Pooley, keynote speaker at a conference on English educa8on, makes a case for the
necessity of prepara8on and training of responsible teachers of English and Wri8ng, and of those
responsible for the development of the English curriculum. He states that those responsible for
teaching future teachers of the English and wri8ng discipline are not looked upon favorably or
accorded dis8nc8on.
Connor, Marcia L. Andragogy + Pedagogy. Teaching Adults. 11 February 2010. Web.
18 February 2014.
According to Connor, pedagogy is dened as the art and science of educa8ng children but is
oken used as a synonym for teaching or teacher-focus educa8on. Ini8ally, andragogy was
dened as the art and science of helping adults learn. Recently, the deni8on of andragogy has
expanded, according to Connor, to refer to learner-focused educa8on for adults.
