4. Description of CE events/activities and Sub-committees

Civil and Environmental Engineering Day (CEE Day)
CEE Day is an annual event organized for everyone in the NUS CEE family, including the
undergraduates, graduates, professors, staffs and laboratory technicians from both Civil
Engineering and Environmental Science and Engineering. It is a day to reward everyone for their
hard work in the past academic year. CEE Day serves to provide everyone in the community and
alumnus an opportunity to interact with each other. Activities on the day may include Carnival
Games, BINGO, BBQ, Lucky Draws or a signature competition to test our CEE practical skill. It is
also a well-known tradition among the Engineering Faculty that the CE Club gives out free Tshirts to the CE community on this event to reinforce the CE identity and to promote a strong
sense of ownership of the industry.
Since 2013, the CE Club have been co-organising the CEE Day together with the Environmental
Science and Engineering Student Club (ESESC) and the Department to bring about more exciting
activities for the CEE community.
Operation Orion
Operation Orion is a student initiated community service project organized by the CE Club. In
this Overseas Community Involvement Project (OCIP), we seek to put our Civil Engineering
knowledge into good use for the benefit of the less fortunate. Having an impressive 13-year track
record, Operation Orion seeks to explore new dimensions in community service and push the
boundaries of engineering innovation, practicality and resilience. Operation Orion 2010 and 2009
did projects in Mount Hope Training Centres (MHTC) at Balai Karangan, West Kalimantan,
Indonesia. Operation Orion 2013 will be doing a project in Laos in December.
Orientation
Having been through life as NUS students, we understand the hectic schedule during school
terms and the need to take a break and interact with our peers, seniors and juniors. Having a CE
Orientation camp in June/ July is beneficial to the student community in terms of networking
and simply to have fun. This camp serves as a valuable opportunity for current students to forge
closer bonds and promote interactions with other participants. CE camp also caters to the need of
the incoming year ones. The fun activities and informative sessions will give our freshmen
confidence to start their University life as civil engineering students.
Safety and Health Day
Safety Health Day serves to promote safety awareness among CE students. Activities planned for
the upcoming Safety Day include safety poster design, scaffolding modeling, interactive Q&A
session and a talk by the Workplace Safety and Health Council (WSHC).
Site Visits
As part of the undergraduates career development, CE Club organizes several Site Visits during
the academic year. This keeps the undergraduate in touch with the construction method
developments in Singapore. This activity also serves to bring the CE undergraduates closer to
some of the companies in Singapore.
Welfare Activity

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

To foster closer relationships among CE students, CE Club organizes Welfare Activities. This
event gives undergraduates the chance to exercise and be healthy. Furthermore, participants can
also bond together as they overcome the physical challenges together. The CE Club is innovative
and always tries to bring in fresh ideas to NUS. We were the first to organize a Lasertag game at
night in NUS in 2009 and 2010. In 2008, we organized a night cycling expedition.
Club Operations and Development Sub-committee
This sub-committee forms the core operations of the Club, operations that are essential for any
events or initiatives that the Club spearheads. Members of this sub-committee are specialised in
their own field and should constantly strive to upkeep good practices and improve on the current
system within their own domain. Members will also be responsible for reviewing the clubs
structure and documentation system and improve it if necessary.
Career Development Sub-committee
The sub-committees objective is to create career awareness by working with students from the
cohort and implementing a series of programs. The members are responsible for arranging site
visits and talks by industrial partners. They will also arrange avenues for undergraduates who
have returned from industrial attachments (IA, VIP) and overseas programs (SEP, NOC) to share
their experiences with others. The sub-committee will also assist in the organization of Safety and
Health Day in order to inculcate safety values into the CE community.
Student Affairs & Welfare Sub-committee
The sub-committee focuses on issues regarding academic progression and student life of the
undergraduates. The members will create avenues for the undergraduates to feedback on such
issues. They will investigate and recommend policies to the club and to the Civil and
Environmental Engineering Department through the Chairperson. The sub-committee will also
facilitate the transition of undergraduates from the common engineering stream, polytechnic
track and overseas exchange programs into the Civil Engineering program.
The sub-committee is also to look after the wellbeing of the undergraduates. They will also help
to organize the welfare activities and CEE Day.
