Deadliest Stats For Car Accidents

ichard Read of The Car Connection drives us to the brink with this piece explaining..."We've spilled a lot of ink discussing the most congested cities for
drivers. But what about the most dangerous states for auto-related deaths?
Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle of the University of Michigan Transportation
Research Institute asked themselves the same question -- and unlike us, they decided
to find an answer.
To do that, they looked at traffic fatality stats from the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration for calendar year 2013 (the most recent year available). And just
to make things interesting, Sivak and Schoettle did a little fancy math to see how highway fatalities compared to deaths as a whole.
Their findings were eye-opening.

About Leather Dresses?

o you know that when a woman wears a leather dress, a man' s heart

Ever wonder why?
My Guess...Its because she smells like a new Football !!!!

Thought of the Day... Reality Check:

eep within a forest
a little turtle began
to climb a tree. After
hours of effort he reached the
top, jumped into the air waving his front legs and
crashed to the ground. After recovering, he slowly
climbed the tree again, jumped, and fell to the
ground. The turtle tried again and again while a couple
of birds sitting on a branch watched his sad efforts. Finally, the female bird turned to her mate. Dear, she
chirped, I think its time to tell him hes adopted.

Famed Hollywood
Writer Brings
Seal Beach Past to Life
D
By Chris MacDonald, Writer/Photographer,
HB Ambassador/The Local News Columnist

uring Seal Beach's 100th Anniversary Year, famed Hollywood TV

writer Larry Strawther has been giving fascinating tours of the fabled city about
28 miles east of Los Angeles and a few miles
north of Huntington Beach, off Pacific Coast
Highway. Seal Beach has definitely had its
share of stardomboth fame and infamy.
In the 1860s, it started out as "Anaheim
Landing" (the first seaport in what would become Orange County) where famous wines
grown in the Anaheim area were loaded on
ships for distribution. The Landing later became one of the first major seaside resorts in
Southern California, until the Navy took over
the area and removed 300 houses in the
1940s. A naval weapons station remains there
today.
The area has always been known for its
surfing and surfers. One of the first surfing
contests ever was in 1914, Strawther said. It's
still home to the famous Harbor Surfboards
and helped develop Surf Champions like
Jack and Mike Haley.
It became known as "Bay City," as developers attempted to sell lots and houses between 19041912. Promoters and city
leaders later helped change the name to "Seal
Beach" in an effort to attract tourism in their
constant competition with Long Beach and

the Beach, then remodeled in 1947. Although

shuttered in 2012, it became known far and
wide for its unusual films and silent movies
(complete with popular organ music played
"live"). Steven Spielberg loved coming here
to see foreign films when he was a student at
Long Beach State in the 1960s. According to
Strawther, several movies have been filmed
at the theater or in other businesses or on the
streets in Seal Beach. These include, Clint
Eastwood's mega-hit, "American Sniper"
(bar scenes were shot in O'Malleys on Main
and the stars are seen walking down the
Pier); part of the 1923 hit, Cecil B. DeMilles'
"Ten Commandments" and a 1966 movie, "A
Born Loser" (Billy Jack's first film) shows
Main Streets and its businesses.
Strawther said Stegens Automotive, 16th
and PCH, is the city's oldest business; Bay
Hardware is the oldest establishment on
Main (1950), and The Abbey on Main became world famous when Home Run Baseball Champion Mark McGuire, wore Abbey
hats at his news conferences, prompting
thousands of orders for "the hat." Seal Beach
also has a "fiddling priest" and served as
home for several celebrities, including twotime Olympic gold medalist Diver Pat McCormick, NBA Basketball Champ Jack
Haley and Robert August, hit of the classic,

other places that had piers and pavilions. Seal

Beach had a pier, pavilion, roller-coaster
(from the World's Fair in San Francisco) and
a "Joy Zone," which included bowling.
The volunteer Fire Department bought
their first hose in 1915 but could not afford a
fire engine until 1924, according to
Strawther.
In 1915, the city incorporated, in part, "to
make it legal to drink alcohol." "For years, it
was known by many as 'Sewer City,'" said
the writer, who has created scripts for Happy
Days, Jeopardy, Laverne and Shirley, Night
Court and Sinbad. The recent author of "Seal
Beach-A Brief History," said it was known
for its gambling, alcohol and prostitution.
"There even were six gambling ships offshore."
"Since some of the other cities around it
were 'dry,' drinkers loved to come here," he
said.
He told how the La Burdette Building on
Main Street at one time had a school upstairs
and a saloon downstairs; how popular Walt's
Wharf had a brothel upstairs and how the
Tank Farm building at 212 Main used to have
Masons meeting upstairs. "The ashes from
one of its presidents were placed in the wall
and discovered after a remodeling,"
Strawther said. With increased pressure from
people to do away with the "dark element"
in town, some of Seal Beach's gambling
leaders moved on to Las Vegas and became
even more successful.
The iconic Bay Theater near Main and Pacific Coast Highway was originally built as

"The Endless Summer."

Going on the street tour with us were
Ron and Stacey Juler of Seal Beach. She
said her dad, who would become Dr. Gerald Fresonke, DDS, as a kid would climb
the closed Joy Zone roller coaster (with
friends), pushing a car to the top, then ride
down for free. Stacey is part of local lore
as well. As a 14-year-old Seal Beach Swim
Team member, she set a record that holds
to this day as the youngest female to swim
from Catalina to Palos Verdes Peninsula in
1971. She started her swim at 8pm and hit
shore at 8:30am. Another local swimmer,
Andy Taylor, 12, set the male record for
the swim.
One of my friends, Norma Brandel Gibbs,
90, as a single mother became Orange
County's first woman mayor in Seal Beach
(1960). This amazing civil servant migrated
to Huntington Beach and became a City
Councilwoman there in 1970. She later became Mayor and helped create beautiful
Central Park in HB.
Getting back to Seal Beach, it's one of my
favorite places to visit because there's almost
always a cool breeze on the Pier. If you'd like
to find out more about its incredible past, you
can get this insightful book, which includes
some dandy old photos, by going
amazon.com and typing, "Seal Beach-A
Brief History" by Larry Strawther. Thanks
you Larry, vice chair of marketing for the
Seal Beach Centennial Committee, and
everyone else who is helping keep this city's
unbelievable history "alive."

Francis insists just the opposite. To say he is

adamant is an understatement.
Gender ideology is demonic! Pope
Francis insists. He says that it militates
against the order of creation. He sees it as
so toxic, so destructive, that he has compared gender ideology to the educational
policies of Hitler.
In Italy, Francis has become the spiritual
inspiration for a nationwide movement to
banish gender theory. This culminated in a
huge demonstration in Rome this summer.
As one article reported, Hundreds of thousands of people from all over Italy responded to Pope Francis repeated warnings
about gender ideology, by taking part in an
enormous demonstration in the square of St.
John Lateran in Rome on Saturday. The
Family Day was aimed at defending the

pope carefully enough. If they did, both

sides would be surprised, shocked, and one
sideliberalswould be horrified.
Im referring specifically to this popes remarkably staunch criticisms of the things he
sees as threatening the family: What he calls
the throwaway culture of abortion, the
ideological colonization and deforming
of marriage, the Satanic adoption of children by homosexual couples, and the demonic cult of gender theory.
Yes, those blistering descriptions all belong to Pope Francis.
I could detail any of these here at length
and shock liberal sensibilities and claims that
this leftist pope is one of them. After all,
Ive yet to meet a liberal who thinks that
same-sex marriage is the work of the Father
of Lies.
But Id like to expend a few words on this
popes ongoing war against gender theory
specifically, and namely its attempted introduction in Francis home diocese of Rome
and throughout Italy. This has greatly upset
Francis, the extent to which we Americans
(Francis critics and admirers alike) are completely unaware. Now that he is back in
Rome, Francis battle against gender theory
will recommence with zeal.
Of course, gender theory, gender ideology,
gender studies, even entire gender programs,
have been all the rage in American academia
for decades. Pope Francis, for one, despises
the very concept. He has argued constantly,
consistently, that men and women are not
only vitally different, but that these differencesordained by nature and Godconstitute an essential complementarity that
husbands and wives bring to marriage and
family relationships and responsibilities.
Under Francis direction last year, the Vatican held an international-ecumenical conference solely on this complementarity. In a
world and culture that arguesand, in fact,
teachesthat men and women and husbands and wives and dads and moms are interchangeable, if not inconsequential,

traditional family and stopping the spread of

gender ideology in schools.
Some estimates were higher, as organizers
hoped to draw a million marchers. Its fantastic, said one attendee, a father of six from
northern Italy. Finally, people have gathered to fight this terrible ideology. One organizer celebrated from the stage, The Holy
Father is with us, as indeed he was.
The speaker held forth under a giant banner that read in Italian: Difendiamo i nostri
figli. STOP GENDER nelle scuole. Translation: Defend our children. STOP GENDER in the schools.
We must understand that Pope Francis
views gender theory as not just some feminist thing he doesnt like. He sees it as a direct threat to family and marriage. And as he
said to the joint session of Congress during
his recent visit, I cannot hide my concern
for the family, which is threatened, perhaps
as never before, from within and without.
Fundamental relationships are being called
into question, as is the very basis of marriage
and the family. He told President Obama
and the crowd that greeted him at the White
House that he had come to the country
specifically to celebrate and support the institutions of marriage and the family at this
critical moment in the history of our civilization.
Well, to this pope, gender theory is a
major threat to the institutions of marriage
and family at this critical moment. In this,
and still more, liberals might want to pause
a bit before transforming Pope Francis into
their poster boy.

Editors note: A shorter version of this article first appeared in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
ope Francis has returned to Rome
after a historic trip to the United
States. It was a fascinating endeavor.
There have been many papal visits to
America in my lifetimein fact, nearly all
have been in my lifetime, the first occurring in 1965, the year before I was born.
None of these, however, were so heavily
marked by political-ideological battle lines
among liberals and conservatives. Really,
those lines have been drawn boldly on the

"WHO WE ARE--California Gov. Jerry Brown (D)
signed California's right-todie bill into law Monday, allowing
terminally
ill
residents of the nation's most
populous state to end their
own lives with the aid of their
physician.
"The crux of the matter is
whether the State of California should continue to make
it a crime for a dying person
to end his life, no matter how
great his pain or suffering,"
Brown said in a signing statement. "In the end, I was left
to reflect on what I would
want in the face of my own
death." (Photo left: California

Brown continued, "I do not
know what I would do if I
were dying in prolonged and
excruciating pain. I am certain, however, that it would
be a comfort to be able to
consider the options afforded
by this bill. And I wouldn't
deny that right to others."
California's End of Life Option Act passed in the state
Senate and Assembly last
month, marking a huge victory for the "death with dignity" movement. The law will
allow terminally ill patients
to seek medical aid in ending
their lives as long as they
have been given six months
or less to live by two doctors,
provided a written request

aid-in-dying is currently in
dispute in New Mexico's
courts.
The California bill was inspired by Brittany Maynard,
the 29-year-old San Francisco
Bay Area resident who gained
national attention for her decision to move to Oregon to
take advantage of the state's
longstanding aid-in-dying
law. Maynard had been diagnosed with terminal brain
cancer, but as a California
resident, could not pursue
end-of-life options at home.
"I am heartbroken that I had
to leave behind my home, my
community and my friends in
California. But I am dying
and I refuse to lose my dignity. I refuse to subject myself and my family to
purposeless, prolonged pain
and suffering at the hands of
an incurable disease," Maynard said in a message to legislators recorded several
weeks before her death. "No
one should have to leave their
home and community for
peace of mind, to escape suffering and to plan for a gentle
death."

Brittany Manyard's mother,
Debbie Ziegler (photo left),
appeared at a news conference announcing the reintroduction of the right-to-die bill
in August.

family took up the helm of
her activism after her death

Brittany fought to the end

for expanded availability of
end-of-life options in California, Ziegler told reporters in
the state capital earlier this
year. I will make my daughter proud by standing up and
telling her story, even if my
voice shakes. Even if I choke
back tears.
Lawmakers initially tried to
pass the bill during their regular session, but the effort fell
flat in the state Assembly,
where legislators from heavily Catholic districts abandoned the bill in committee.
Right-to-die legislation was
reintroduced during a special
session on health care later in
the summer, and passed after
its authors added a sunset
provision requiring lawmakers to vote on renewing the
bill in 10 years.
The
Catholic
church
strongly opposed the bill.
Brown, who studied in a Jesuit seminary prior to his political career, gave no
previous indication whether
he would sign the legislation.
In his signing statement, he
noted he discussed the issue
with a Catholic bishop, in addition to his friends, former
classmates and two of his
doctors.
The law will go into effect
next year.

Political Correctness: No Common Sense

t. Trump is not the first New Yorker

to say things in an abrasive manner,
but at least he's being honest about
the world as it is instead of the world as we
would like it to be and a lot of folks find that
attractive.
Donald Trump says: "I think the big problem
this country has is being politically correct." I
agree with him.
Political correctness is the practice of refusing
to acknowledge the truth or the facts of a situation because your words may be considered offensive to some people. This is not the same as
being purposefully rude or hurtful although
some may interpret it that way.
For example, I was reading an interview with
John Langley, the producer of the show COPS,
where he said this:
"I show more white people than statistically
what the truth is in terms of street crime. If you
look at the prisons, it is 60-something percent
people of color and 30-something percent white

he overwhelming majority of immigration to the United States is

the result of our visa policies. Each
year, millions of visas are issued to temporary
workers, foreign students, refugees, asylees,
and permanent immigrants for admission into
the United States. The lions share of these
visas are for lesser-skilled and lower-paid
workers and their dependents who, because
they are here on work-authorized visas, are
added directly to the same labor pool occupied by current unemployed jobseekers. Expressly because they arrive on legal
immigrant visas, most will be able to draw a
wide range of taxpayer-funded benefits, and
corporations will be allowed to directly substitute these workers for Americans. Improved border security would have no effect
on the continued arrival of these foreign
workers, refugees, and permanent immigrantsbecause they are all invited here by
the federal government..."

people. If you look at COPS is it 60-percent

white and 40-percent other. It's just the reverse.
And I do that intentionally because I do not want
to contribute to negative stereotypes."
This is a classic example of political correctness. It's a concerted effort to deny reality in the
name of a greater good. But
in most cases the proponents
of political correctness are
not so up-front about their
motives. I would ask Mr.
Langley: "So why don't
you care that you are disproportionally portraying
white people in a negative light?"
Besides, statistics are
the just cold hard facts.
Facts and statistics
don't create a false
"stereotype."
Political correctness also silences
public discourse
on some very important
issues
and
certainly
thwarts public policy discussions in that no public official wants to become embroiled in a controversy that results in
being labeled a bigot, racist, xenophobe, etc.
There are a few groups, however, that a public
person can offend without getting into trouble
with the politically correct police. You are safe
if you stick to maligning whites, Christians
and/or males. Southerners in general are also
fair game but we don't seem to care because it's
been that way forever. And if you happen to be
a Southern, white, Christian
male, well then you are the
scum of the earth and need to
apologize for even being born.
Another glaring example of
political correctness is the way
President Obama and the liberal
media elite absolutely refuse to
acknowledge the problem
within the Islamic faith that is,
the doctrine of jihad that has
led to chaos and murderous, violent attacks against innocent
people here and around the
world. What these Muslims do
is take Koranic verses and historic Islamic teaching and live
them out with the belief that
they are pleasing Allah. These

people even tell the world openly and clearly

that they are intentionally committing these
atrocities for the cause of advancing Islam.
These folks are not mentally ill. They are evil.
Yet, the politically correct crowd continues to
pretend they have no idea why these people do
what they do. It would be like the KKK conducting a cross burning in the front yard of
a black family back in the
1920s and then
the

media reporting it
like this: "We have no idea what
motivates these people. Could be a lack of good
jobs. Could be a fascination with white sheets.
It's a mystery."
We have a serious situation with millions of
people invading our country from Mexico
with absolutely no respect for our laws. Yet we
are paralyzed as a country from dealing with
the issue of how to stop this from happening
(such as building a fence) because we are
afraid of being called anti-Hispanic. This is
nuts. When ISIS, or a group like that, crosses
our porous border and sets off a bomb in
downtown Dallas or Houston that kills thousands of people, watch how fast our government can build a wall.
We have to be honest about the world as it is
instead of the world as we would like it to be.
Donald Trump may be abrasive with the way
he says things sometimes (he would not be the
first New Yorker to do this), but his candor,
bluntness and disdain for political correctness
is attracting a lot of supporters right now.
Tim Wildmon (contact@afa.net) is president of
the American Family Association in Tupelo, MS.

The charge carries a possible maximum sentence of life in prison if Muller is convicted.
A cell phone Muller allegedly left behind
during an attempted home invasion robbery in
Dublin on June 5 led authorities to evidence allegedly linking him to the kidnapping.
Last month, Muller pleaded no

Alameda County Superior Court
on charges of attempted robbery,
burglary and assault with a deadly
weapon in the Dublin case.
Vallejo police initially said in
March that they believed
Huskins and Quinns account
of the kidnapping was a hoax
and that the couple had led police on a wild goose chase.
After Muller was charged in
the federal criminal complaint,
Police Chief Andrew Bidou
sent the couple a letter of apology in July. Wagner said in a statement
today, The bizarre circumstances of the
events in Vallejo in March complicated the
investigation of this matter. But the Vallejo
Police Department, the FBI, and our law enforcement allies in Alameda County have
done excellent work in recent months to
bring this investigation to a conclusion, the
U.S. attorney said.
Muller graduated from Harvard Law School
and worked for a time as an immigration attorney. He was disbarred as a California lawyer
earlier this year." BIZARRE...

according to U.S.
Attorney Benjamin
Wagner. Matthew
Muller, 38, of Orangevale in Sacramento, will be
arraigned on the

He is accused of breaking into a Mare Island

two days before dropping her off near her

The single count of kidnapping is the same

the grand jury action clears the way for a future

The Game of Bridge Just Might Be More

of a Contact Sport Than One Might Think,
at Least Intellect to Intellect, Mind to Mind
it Still is a Contact Sport!

port: An athletic activity requiring skill

or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis,
golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting,

fishing, etc. Dictionary.com

Bridge is a card game played by tens-of-millions of people around the world,
in private and in public tournaments. The game has complex rules, national and
international governing bodies and a loyal following. But is it a sport? We're
about to find out. Her
Majestys High Court
of Justice in London
will soon decide once
and for allmaybe
if bridge is indeed a
sport.
According to Dictionary.com, it sure
doesn't appear as if
bridge is a sport.
While physical exertion alone isn't sufficient to constitute a
sport, lest we are
forced to include recreational activities such
as gardening and walking the dog, most definitions of sport do
require some element
of physicality. And the
physical exertion in bridge is limited to shuffling and dealing cards, then laying
them on the table.
One attorney in the case argued that the sports councils are entitled to separate

Kobritz

on

Sports

mind games from physical activities when deciding who to recognize. However,
that view ignores the reality that virtually every sport includes a mental aspect or
mind games. Anyone who has ever played a sport knows firsthand that the mental aspects are important, sometimes more important, than physical exertion.
Whether strategizing your next shot in golf, outthinking your defender in basketball or psyching out an opponent in tennis, the mind has a direct impact on ones
success.
Should the fact that bridge emphasizes the mind more than the rest of the body
preclude it from being defined as a sport? Isn't the brain part of the body, just another muscle? If so, then why can't it be argued that mind games involve muscle
power, i.e., physical exertion?
There is more than nomenclature and pride at stake in the outcome of the bridge
lawsuit. In England, as is true in many other countries, sports are eligible for government funding and receive a number of tax benefits that aren't available to recreational activities. In fact, the lawsuit stems from the denial of the English Bridge
Unions request for state funding. But if the court determines that bridge is a sport,
will chess, checkers, scrabble, solitaire, fantasy sports, and tiddlywinks, among
other activities, be lining up at the public trough?
We may already have passed that divide. The International Olympic Committee
allows a number of sports to participate in quadrennial competition, yet recognizes
additional activities as sports although they are not allowed to participate in the
Games. Included in the latter category isbridge.
Regardless of how the High Court rules as a matter of law the decision won't
put to rest the debate over what constitutes a sport. It will only determine who
gets a slice of the government pie.

OMG:
Chewing Gum
Good
Amy Shira Teitel -TestTube
"It's long been told that chewing
gum is great for your teeth, but is
it? Could it be a replacement to
flossing?
Chewing gum's got a bad
rep, and perhaps deservedly so: It's a vulgar
habit of the ill-mannered, it rots your
teeth, and there's
nothing more disthan
gusting
reaching under a
desk
and
touching a
petrified
blob of
chewedup gum.
Fed up with
wads of gum being
discarded everywhere and
the costs associated with its removal, the Prime Minister of Singapore banned chewing gum in his
country in 1992 (although you can
chew it if you have a prescription
from your doctor).
A study just released in the journal
PLoS ONE, however, shows that
chewing gum may be as beneficial to
oral hygiene as flossing. Researchers

had five subjects chew gum for different lengths of time. When they
were done, they analyzed the bacteria in the gum. They counted up to
100 million bacteria per
piece--which is more or
less the same
amount
of
bacteria
r e moved
from a
good flossing!
What say
you about gum?
Does this change
how you feel about
it? Do you always
have a piece in your
mouth or do you steer
clear of the stuff? Would
you rather floss after every
meal, or just pop a piece of
gum in your mouth? For those
out there who do chew gum,
what do you do with it when you're
done chewing it?
"Chewing gum has already been
shown to boost cognitive function
and suppress appetite. Now scientists
have provided another reason to do
it."

The last gun store in San Francisco
says its been driven out of town by proposed new regulations.
Under the proposed new rules, holdout
High Bridge Arms would have been required to videotape all firearm and ammunition sales and store them for at least
five years time. Data on ammunition
sales and transferswho bought or
transferred what, and when, along Daniel Rivero
with other personal informationwould have to be
turned over to the San Francisco Police Department at
least once a week.
Calling these unprecedented and intrusive burdens, High Bridge announced it is ready to close its
doors. As of next month, the shop will be shutting
down its storefront in the citys gentrifying Mission
District, a move which will make San Francisco the
largest city in the country without a single gun shop,
according to a Fusion analysis of the top 15 cities in
the U.S. by population.
Its with tremendous sadness and regret that I have
to announce we are closing our shop, read a post on
the High Arms Facebook page. It has been a long and
difficult ride, but a great pleasure to be your last San
Francisco Gun shop.
This year, its this [law] and next year will probably
be something else, General Manager Steven Alcairo
told Fox News. We dont want to wait for it.
Previously, the business had been made to comply
with regulations requiring it to fortify the buildings
security and to set up video surveillance. The shop
currently has 17 cameras. Its managers say they turn
footage over to police when required.

Mark Farrell, the city supervisor who is bringing the

new proposal to vote, says despite the fact that the city
already has some of the strictest gun laws in the country on the books, more can be done on public safety
as it relates to guns. SFist recently reported
that so far this year, the city is on track for its
highest homicide rate in years, mostly attributed to gun deaths.
Easy access to guns and ammunition continue to contribute to senseless violent crime
here in San Francisco and across the country,
Farrell said in a statement. We should do
everything in our power
to give local law enforcement the
additional tools they need to prevent crime and keep our neighborhoods safe.
The stated goal of the draft legislation is to prevent and detect
the sale of firearms and ammunition by dealers to persons who are
prohibited by law from possessing these items, in addition to
other public safety concerns,
reads the statement.
But owners argue it would subject lawful gun owners to intrusions of their personal data, while
criminals continue to buy their
guns on the black market.
The element were concerned
with, they dont shop here. They
dont, manager Alcairo told a
local CBS affiliate. I mean youre going to get video
surveillance of people who are coming in here legally
buying stuff with their identification, criminals are not
doing that.
The closure of the shop will be historic, as its

By Harold Pease Ph. D

erguson, Detroit, Baltimore and
now the willful unloading by an
angry black man of 15 bullets into
a Texas Sherriff who was innocently fueling his automobile. Each seemingly
has one thing in commonpent up
anger directed first at their own race and
now at law enforcement. Black lives
matter some chant but most black
homicides are by black perpetrators, not
white. Blacks, we are told, now do half
of all murders in the United States. It
seems that the black communities are on
fire and it seems driven mostly by young
angry black men.
The problem has deeper roots than
this. Well-meaning progressive policies
of the last fifty years, most notably
those encouraging dependency, have
done much to return the blacks to a very
real form of slavery. What is said in this
article applies also to other races taking
the route of dependency for problem
solving, but they are not the focus of the
choice of violence as in the above instances. They have not yet turned on
themselves and then upon law enforcement.
Today unemployment for blacks is
nearly twice that of whites and
for black youth in
t h e

inner
cities it has been
known to soar to as high as 60
percent. Moreover, the U. S. Census
Bureau listed the overall poverty rate in
2011 at 15 percent, but for blacks it was
27.6 percent. Overall household income was $50,054, but for blacks it was
$32,229. The Heritage Foundation
found that only 56 percent of blacks
graduate from high school. The average black man has little to hope for in a
world where seemingly all other races
appear to have much more.
It did not used to be this way. According to black economist, Walter
Williams, prior to the progressive socialist policies of the last 50 years,
black unemployment was lower and
blacks were more active in the labor
market than they are today. In 1910,
for example, 71 percent of blacks over
nine years of age were employed, compared to 51 percent for whites. This
trend stayed strong through the 1960s,
black male labor force participation in
every age group was equal to or greater
than that of whites, he says. Although
black schools, prior to the 1960s, were
characteristically modest in funding and
supplies, they often produced student

bodies with high average IQs and graduated scholars of note.

Black economist Thomas Sowell, in
his book Education: Assumptions Versus History, agreed, In short, no stringent elitism is necessary to achieve
high-quality education. It is only necessary to exclude the tiny fraction (of
students) who are troublemakers.
Black poverty was steadily and noticeable declining.
What destroyed all this? It was destroyed by the socialist notion that the
government will take from those who
have and give to those who have less.
The War on Poverty is the philosophy
that largely led a race into the same type
of dependency that they had worked a
hundred years to escape after the Civil
War and had made notable advancement. A trillion dollars a year now feeds
this monster15 trillion since the program was begun by President Lyndon
Johnson in 1964; but unfortunately,
with no measurable end to poverty as
promised. Statistics show poverty to be
proportionally about the same as when
the program was begun.
Kurt Williamsen in a article, Do Progressive Policies Hurt Black Americans? described how this played out.
Welfare spending contributed to overall black poverty by encouraging singleparent, female-headed households.
Young black women
often had children out
of wedlock, beginning
a cycle of enduring
poverty and welfare,
wherein they relied on
welfare as a main source
of income, as did their
children. Welfare provided
more money for young
women with fatherless children, on average, than the
same young women could
have made if they were employed. It also destroyed families. If she got married she
would lose the benefits. Today,
73 percent of black babies are
born to unwed mothers and well
over a third of the race is on welfare. Unfortunately, welfare provided an incentive for young black
women to raise fatherless children
and collect welfare, leading to the
epidemic problems with black crime,
black schooling, black unemployment
and black poverty. She may be a fantastic mom but odds of productivity in
all these areas is more often improved
in a full family setting.
So we return to the angry black young
man tempted to use violence against his
own race, then against authority to obtain what he wants. With the media on
sight, almost encouraging this activity,
he is rewarded in his violence and performs on cue. And the major point of
this column is overlooked. Have we, in
effect, returned our black brother to
slavery by setting him up for a dependency that is as real as the slavery of his
forefathers? I think so.

STRONG WOMEN
Audrey Hepburn

udrey Hepburn was born to an English

father and Dutch mother in Belgium,
May 4th, 1929. Her fathers job as an
insurance agent meant the family often moved
between England, Holland and Belgium. In
1935, her parents divorced; one reason for this
was that her father was a Nazi sympathizer. The
divorce was very traumatic for six year old Audrey; she would later say it was the most traumatic incident of her life. After the war, despite
suffering under the Nazi occupation, Audrey
later tracked down her father to Dublin and supported him financially. From 1935-58, Audrey
went to boarding school in Kent; in 1939 her
mother moved the family to Arnhem in the
Netherlands, where she thought it would be safe from Nazi invasion.
However, in 1940, the Netherlands was overrun and the country
fell under Nazi occupation until liberation in 1945. During this time,
Audrey went to school at the Arnhem conservatory where she studied and also learnt ballet. At one time she
considered taking ballet as a serious career
occupation. During the occupation, it was
said she would often dance in various locations, helping to raise money for the underground movement.
Towards the end of the war, the occupation of Netherlands became increasingly
brutal. After the D Day landings of 1944,
the Germans took most of the pitiable rations of the Dutch, leaving many to starve
or freeze to death. Reprisals and shootings
against the local population were common.
As a young girl, Audrey saw her uncle and mothers cousin shot in
the street by the Germans. She also recalls seeing a train load of Jewish children being herded into cattle trucks for deportation.

in the oven and toast for 6 minutes.
Once toasted, place in an extra large
mixing bowl. Add peanut butter, sugars,
honey and butter to a medium
saucepan.Stir until dissolved, then remove from heat. Add in vanilla. Pour the
sauce into oats in mixing bowl. Use oil
to grease one large cookie sheet.
Spread mixture evenly onto cookie
sheet, pressing firm to seal throughout
cookie sheet. Place in the oven and bake
for 6-8 minutes, or until it starts to brown.
Let cool and then cut into bars.

EarthTalk

Dear EarthTalk:
Is it true that playing
on artificial turf fields
can cause cancer? If so, how
can I minimize exposure for my sports-loving kids?
~ Melanie Witmer, Syracuse, NY

ust when you thought it was safe to play soccer on

that brand new synthetic turf field, it may be time to
think again. Those little black dirt-like granules that fill
up the space between synthetic blades of grass and
make up some 90 percent of todays artificial turf fields
are actually ground-up car and truck tires. As such they
contain a host of potentially noxious chemicals that can
lead to a wide range of health problems.

Four of the constituent chemicals in these tire

crumbs (or tire mulch) as they are calledarsenic,
benzene, cadmium and nickelare deemed carcinogens by the International Agency for Cancer Research.
Others have been linked to skin, eye and respiratory ir-

ritation, kidney and liver problems, allergic reactions,

nervous systems disorders and developmental delays.
While the risk came to light recently when a University of Washington womens soccer coach began to
think it might be more than a coincidence that two of
her goalies were stricken with cancer, researchers have
known about such potential links for years. A 2007 report by the Connecticut-based Environment & Human
Health Inc. (EHHI) looked at several scientific studies
and found definitive connections between various
health problems and exposure to synthetic turf.
EHHI also reported that kids on playfields are likely
to face similar risks as line workers in the rubber fabrication and reclamation industries, where they say health
reports show the presence of multiple volatile organic
hydrocarbons and other toxic elements in
the air. Studies at tire reclamation sites report leaching of similar sets of chemicals
into the ground water, says the group.
The Synthetic Turf Council, an industry
group, maintains that there is considerable
evidence pointing to the health safety of
synthetic turf. But the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) isnt taking sides,
leaving it up to state and local jurisdictions
to decide whether or not to allow artificial
turf. The EPA would like to see more research done so parents everywhere can
have a better idea of the risks involved.
Of course, synthetic turf fields arent all
bad. For one, they dont need frequent watering (a grass playing field typically requires 50,000 gallons of water per week
during growing season) and doesnt require the application of potentially toxic pesticides. Furthermore, turf
is much more durable and less costly to maintain than
grass, and players suffer fewer injuries on it since it
doesnt turn to slippery mud when wet.

Europes 2015
Wine Harvest: On the
Verge of Greatness?

By: Chris Mercer

If even half of the excitement around
the 2015 wine harvest in some of Europe's best known regions, such as Bordeaux, Rioja and Burgundy, is reflected in the final wines, then the
vintage could be one to savour.
Rain has been a challenge in Bordeaux in September 2015, but the
mood is still very optimistic
Many winemakers in regions such as Bordeaux, Champagne, Burgundy, Rhone, Rioja and Tuscany must be close to running out of
positive adjectives to bestow on the 2015 wine
harvest.
Proclamations of greatness at this point are tentative, of course. Its tough to
generalise in a region let
alone across swathes of a
continent, and superlatives
are always open to accusations of commercial realpolitik; they would say
its great, wouldnt they?
In Bordeaux, where they
joke themselves of declaring
each year a potential vintage
of the century for the reds, it
is believed that for Bordeaux
2015 four of professor Denis
Dubourdieus five hurdles for a great vintage have been leaped in many
cases.
The fifth good weather during harvest looks negotiable. Olivier
Bernard, head of the classified chateaux union UGC, was offering writers
at Decanters 40th anniversary lunch last week a glimpse of the weather
forecast on his smartphone. It was all sunshine.
Theres been some rain, and more is forecast which may make things

trickier for later

ripening Cabernet Sauvignon,
if not bring a
smile to Sauternes but the mood in general is
David White
very upbeat.
In Champagne, Decanter contributor and author Michael Edwards believes it is a question of where the 2015 vintage
sits on a spectrum ranging from good to great.
Burgundy, too, is excited in its own understated
way. Decanter columnist Andrew Jefford wrote
late last month that Burgundy 2015 has the potential to be great, even if a temperate August
means it does not scale the heights of the very
best.
In Rioja, I would compare it to 2005, said
Rioja Alta winemaker Julio Saenz, in a nod to
one the Spanish regions best vintages. Saenz is
half finished with the picking already, with
many in Rioja starting harvest two or three
weeks early.
In Italy, wine council UIV has reported minimal problems with grape disease in the vineyards across the country and there are upbeat
tones in Tuscany and Piedmont.
If there is an issue, then it could be yields
which took a hit in some of the areas mentioned following an intense heatwave in July.
Sadly for producers, enthusiasm cannot be bottled, and so there is necessarily still much to play for.

Protect Us From Agency

Created to Protect Us
payday lenders, student debt, and more.
Take credit unions. No one thinks that credit
unions were responsible for the financial meltdown that began in 2008. Yet they have been hit
with over 6,000 pages of regulations since 2009,
with most coming from the CFPB. Big Wall
Street players, by contrast, have mostly gotten
off scot-free.
The CFPB is also working to shut down
payday lenders -- companies that make
small, short-term loans usually to
working families of various incomes.
Critics claim that payday
lenders take advantage of their
customers. But banks aren't
in the business of lending
$100 or $200 for a week
or two, until the next paycheck comes in. And if
they did they'd have to
charge disproportionately
higher fees.
Without the payday lending
industry, workers in need of
immediate cash might have to pay exorbitant late charges or turn to unregulated loan
sharks, or they might take a chance on writing
a hot check in the hope of finding money to
cover it.
If there are bad actors in the payday lending
industry, then go after them. But the industry
helps people who need small amounts of money

immediately.
Further, consider student debt. President
Obama and the CFPB are increasingly concerned about the growing burden of student
debt, which has exploded under the president.
Student debt now stands at $1.2 trillion -- over
triple what it was a decade ago.
The problem started when Obama decided the
federal government could do a better
job of handling student loans than
the private sector. Since Obama
took the guaranteed student loan
business away from private sector banks and put the federal
government in charge, students
have piled up more student debt
than ever.
Now the CFPB wants to
bring its regulatory overreach to
credit unions, payday lending
and other financial institutions.
But clearly, the entity most in
need of regulation right now is the
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Congress members -- and the
presidential candidates -- need to explain
how they will regain control over this out-ofcontrol agency. In short, who will protect us
from this agency created to protect us?

The Local News, October 15, 2015 hbnews1@aol.com 714.914.9797

By Merrill Matthews
naccountable government will be one of
President Obama's most regrettable
legacies. And the number one candidate
for the model of unaccountable government?
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau,
which just passed its fifth anniversary.
Texas Rep. Jeb Hensarling calls it "the single
most unaccountable agency in the history of
America." Indeed, Senator Ted Cruz and Rep.
John Ratcliffe have introduced the Repeal CFPB
Act to abolish the agency and send its regulatory
functions back to the agencies that originally
handled them.
Democrats created the CFPB as part of DoddFrank; no House Republicans voted for the legislation, and only three moderate Senate
Republicans did.
And yet Congress can't cut its funding, fire its
people or challenge it in court -- at least not easily. CFPB funding is controlled by the Federal
Reserve Bank, yet another unaccountable organization. Maybe CFPB really stands for Congress's Formula for Protecting Bureaucracies.
It's not doing much to help government overspending either. The size of the agency and its
budget have exploded since passage with no end
in sight. Originally, the CFPB budget was $123
million. By 2016 it could be as high as $632
million -- a 500 percent increase in five years.
And it's using that taxpayer money for mischief.
The CFPB is a regulatory monster, attacking
anything that manages money: credit unions,

DIY Peaks
In Real Estate

he real estate market is experiencing a

record number of for sale by owner
transactions. In this modern age where
instructions on how to do anything can be found
online, an increasing number of homeowners
are choosing not to use a real estate agent to sell
their home. Instead, they are opting to do it on
their own.
The primary reason for opting out of using a
real estate agent is to save on the commission.
In California, the average commissions for
real estate agents will cost a seller 6% of the
sales price 3% to the buyers agent and 3%
to the sellers agent. On a $400,000
house, that equates to $24,000. Its
pretty easy to see why a seller would
look to find a way to retain these proceeds if they are able.
The do it yourself, or DIY, market
has been made much easier with the influx of websites offering tutorials on
how to list a property yourself. While
Zillow and Trulia are the most popular,
there are hundreds of websites offering
assistance for the do it yourself homeseller. The increasing popularity of
these websites has helped push the
number of homeowners choosing to sell
it themselves to double in 2015 over last
year. And the trend is still growing.
Real estate agents will argue that they add
value to the transaction, and a good one will.
Properly staging and photographing a home can

sites now offer these services as add-ons to the

standard listing. Homeowners who list their
property for sale on many of these for sale by
owner websites can also opt to pay for independent contract services including a home
stager and a professional house photographer.
While these services do create additional expenses, the extra costs are typically only in the
hundreds of dollars. Compared to the thousands
of dollars of a real estate agents commission,
this is big savings.
If theres one area a website cant compete
with a real estate agents expertise, its in marketing a property. Each real estate market
is unique, and each property within
that market has a unique appeal. There
are a multitude of marketing strategies
that will very much influence how
quickly a property sells and ultimately
how much it will sell for. This is where
a good real estate agent earns their
money. Yes, real estate agents commissions will take 6% of the sales price. But
if they can sell the house for 10%, 15%,
or even 20% more than youd be able to
sell it for by doing it yourself, their services would be worth every penny.
And many homesellers realize this
value eventually. Nearly one third of all
will employ these tactics to help a property sell self-listings online end up cancelling the DIY
faster and at a higher price point than it other- process and relisting with an agent. Whatever
the reasoning, these individuals came to realize
wise would.
But online is catching up. Many listing web- the value of a good real estate agent.
make a big difference in how that home presents
when a prospective buyer is conducting their
search. Homebuyers look at dozens of properties online before deciding on the select few
they wish to view in person, effectively judging
the book by its cover. Professional staging and
photography can make a significant difference
in the traffic of prospective buyers a property
will attract. A good
