THE BASIC RULES OF BLACKJACK
Blackjack is a card game played against 'The House' or a 'deal
er.' The ob ject is to get card s totaling as close to 21 as poss ible
without go ing over 21. Card values are:
2 thro ugh 9-each card count s face value
10 through King -each counts 10 points
Ace -counts 1 or 11 po ints, whichever give s the best hand .
PLAY- Play begins by plac ing bets against the house. After all
bets are in, the 'dealer ' deal s each player and the house two
cards . The dealer 's second card is face dow n.
The dea ler will then ask you if you want a 'hit: or another card .
You can take as many hits as you want to try to get as c lose to 21
as po ssib le withou t going over. If you go over 21 on a hit, you
have 'busted' and lose your bet. If you do not want another card ,
you 'stay: and the next player gets asked for hits.
After ask ing all players for hits, the dealer will take hits depend
ing on his card count. The dealer will 'hit ' unti l his point tota l is
over 16. The dea ler has to take a hit on 16or a 'soft 17' (a 17 made
with an Ace valued at 11 points). The dea ler has to stay on a
'hard 17.'
After the dea ler has taken enoug h ca rds, a comparison is mad e
of the point total of the de aler 's hand and of the player s that
stood . If the dea ler busts or if the stand ing playe r has more
point s than the dealer, the player wins. If the dea ler has not
busted and he has more points than the playe r, the p layer loses
his bet. If both the dealer 's and player 's po int tota l is the same ,
the hand is a tie. If a playe r busted earlier when taking hits and
then later the dea ler busts, the player still loses.
If you get a 'b lack jack ' (two ca rds totaling 21 poin ts -an Ace
and a 10 point ca rd) and the dealer does not, you automa tica lly
win 1V2 times the amo unt of you r bet. If the dea ler gets a
blackjack and neither player does , the players automatically
lose. If both the dea ler and a player get a blackjack, it is a tie.

busted or have blac kjack , the hand is over. If not, the
dealer will take cards until his point total is over 16. The
dealer must hit on a soft 17 and stay on a hard 17. After the
de aler has taken enough ca rds, a compari son is made of
the point total of the dea ler 's hand and the players that
stood . Winners get a W by their bet, losers get an L and
tied players get a T. The totals are then adjusted . Notice
that if a player busted earlier and then later the dea ler
busts, the player still loses. If you go broke , you are out of
the game (see Borrowing from the House).
After the totals are adjusted , the hand is over. A CUT?
