Inspirational
Sharing of
the Year

It is in this phase of the annual string that

we are made to realize we have already seen
the fullness of blessings being bestowed upon
us, even if the year is not over yet.
The visit of Pope Francis to the United
States last month (September 22 to 27) has
helped us arrive at such realization. And to
think of it, with the grace of our faith, the
miracles we are expectant of may just be
waiting to be bestowed upon us.
To recall
It was on Wednesday, March 13, 2013,
when a white smoke was emitted from the
famous chimney in Vatican which the world
incessantly watched with thrill and suspense.
It signalled the election of a new Pontiff and,
indeed, as the bells rang and the new Pope
emerged through a window overlooking St.
Peters Square, jubilation became loud. As he
was being introduced to the world, chants of
Viva Il Papa followed and increased in
intensity. The former archbishop of Buenos
Aires, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was
surprisingly but significantly brought to the
papacy with his election to lead the world's
1.2 billion Catholics. He became Pope
Francis I.
The first Angelus prayer of Pope Francis I
was delivered on a Sunday, March 17, 2013.
On March 19, 2013, the Pope had set his
inauguration. World leaders from various
parts of the world arrived to attend the
occasion.
During his six-day stint in the U.S., Pope
Francis moved us with his inspiring words
and left us dumbfounded with his good deeds.
Mankind is thankful for his concern as he
showed once again that God is Love.
Today, we share with delight the goodness
which the Holy Father brings to the world,
wherever his visitation finds fulfilment as his
presence is cherished by those with whom he
is together with.

The Fall of Damascus: A Novel

This book should be in the shelves of a

person who values prayers. Father Ladras
collection is beautifully assembled, an
inspiring guide and serves as a treasure chest
for those who adhere to their faith and
embrace hope for a variety of concerns that
they have in life.
A glimpse of the pages thereof will reveal
a diverse assemblage of prayers fitting for
every occasion a selection is intended. It is
really a companion that raises confidence in
its possessorthat he is not without a guide
in every step he makes.
It should be procured by every faithful
and lean upon it for his daily endeavour.

The huge passenger aircraft shot up to the

sky over Istanbul early in the afternoon of the
fourth of July, 2012. It was bound for Zurich,
Switzerland. One of the passengers on board
was Omar and this unexpected trip gave him
more questions to ponder upon rather than
obtain satisfaction with what he had
unearthed as to the previous ones. The taking
off of the plane from the Turkish land was felt
by him as a lift to send him to new heights.
The disclosures of the Floralman were too
strange for him to accept but the same could
not be farther from the truthespecially
when considered from the manner of how
they were told.
Omar attempted to close his eyes,
intending to take a nap as the plane which
would carry him to his destination continued
to dash through the bluish sky, but his mind
would not let him. The puzzles that bugged
him in the past few days were somehow
pieced together but there were some links
missing.
Thus:
So, Saul did what he had tofor a
personal, filial motivation.
Hakim and Omar himself were rightfully
remunerated, perhaps even more. But how
would the former get his share?
The Syrians mistook them for an opponent,
of which they werent.

And it seemed the opponents were the ones

who accomplished their missionon their
behalf. But why Sandiko too?
Omar could not deny to himself: he was on
board this plane not because he wanted to
communicate with the doctor and elicit vital
information from himnot even for whatever
thrill the contents of the safety deposit box in
a bank in Zurich could bring him. It was all
because of Sandiko.
Several minutes having gone by, Omar
resolved that his mind needed a respite, and
by way of a diversion, he took out the diary
from his knapsack which he handcarried. The
pocket planner need not be browsed anymore.
It had accomplished its purpose.
He flipped through the pages of the diary
again and came up with the choice on the
verse to read.

One morning in an early December,
2011weekend, I woke up to a sleazy day and
reached out for the things I necessarily would
have to as part of my daily routine: a prayer
book, a cup of coffee and the switch to put
my computer on. After viewing the days
headlines on the Web, I turned to the
bathroom for a shower.
The first drops of water hitting my torso
and abdomen suggested it was unusually cold
that morning. When the crystal-clear fluid
splashed on my left shoulder, I sensed a
penetrating rush of chill that traveled
downward to my hips. I didnt mind it but
instead continued with the bath until I rinsed
the soap away and wiped my body dry. When
I got back to the computer, I was daunted to
discover I could not pound on the keyboard
anymore.

Writ of Habeas Data, When Untenable

In G.R. No. 189155, Sept. 7, 2010, the
Supreme Court said
The writ of habeas data was conceptualized as a
judicial remedy enforcing the right to privacy, most
especially the right to informational privacy of
individuals. The writ operates to protect a persons
right to control information regarding himself,
particularly in the instances where such information
is being collected through unlawful means in order to
achieve unlawful ends.
Needless to state, an indispensable requirement
before the privilege of the writ may be extended is
the showing, at least by substantial evidence, of an
actual or threatened violation of the right to privacy
in life, liberty or security of the victim. This, in the
case at bench, the petitioner failed to do.
The main problem behind the ruling of the Court
of Appeals is that there is actually no evidence on
record that shows that any of the public respondents
had violated or threatened the right to privacy of the
petitioner. The act ascribed by the Court of Appeals
to the public respondents that would have violated or
threatened the right to privacy of the petitioner.

In this edition, the author features certain

developments in the subject of human rights
as viewed from the perspective of
international law with aspects on the matter
where resort to litigation was had before the
courts of justice in the Philippines.
Jurisprudence in the Philippine context
provides insights on the wisdom, guidelines,
precepts and reference which a citizen may
avail in understanding the niceties of
international law. The author thus finds it a
rare privilege to be able to share to the rest of
