November 2015

From the Pastor

WELCOME to the

Signal

The first weekend of October will

stick in our minds for the rest of
our lives. Few of us have ever witnessed destruction on such a wide
scale as happened in the torrential
rains and resulting flooding that affected our state. Our church family
jumped right in and began to help
minister in a number of ways to the
floods victims. Weve raised thousands of dollars that have gone
directly to helping those who lost
their homes, and were continuing to reach out in other ways, as
well. Go to our church website to
find out how you can connect with
ongoing ministry opportunities.
The fall has been busy for our
church family as weve asked you
to make several important deci-

sions. The administrative policies

and decisions weve been involved
in during these last few weeks are
sometimes tedious to work through,
but they have a necessary functionto provide a God-honoring
platform for Kingdom ministry to
take place. Our mission is to make
disciples of Jesus, not to write policies and procedures; our policies,
procedures, budgets and By-Laws
only exist to serve the mission.

-and-a-half to complete the work,

but thanks to a dedicated and passionate committee, the work got
done. The new By-Laws will serve
our church well for many years to
come.

Puzzles for Preschoolers

Our lives are like puzzles arent they? We have lots of the
pieces, and we keep getting new ones. However, we cant
see what the picture is going to look like
in the end. Only God sees the finished work. Only He
knows how they all fit together. Only He knows His plan
for us.
Thats what were teaching preschoolers
this month, that God has a plan for us. He gives us
pieces of our puzzle as we go through life, and they all fit
together. They are all part of His plan.

Coming Up This Month...

Every Sunday in November, our elementary kids are
learning about service. Our lessons are all based around
this big idea as well as Matthew 5:16 which says, In
the same way, let your light shine before others, that
they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father
in heaven.
In light of the catasrophic flooding across SC, this is a
great opportunity for us to help those in need. We are
encouraging our families to put feet to their faith and
serve as a family. Here are three practical ways to serve
this month.
1. Donate or lend a hand of service as our great state is
restored and people whove lost everything attempt to
rebuild their lives.
2. We will have boxes of brownie mix in the childrens
lobby throughout the month. We want families to bake a
treat together and deliver it to someone who may need
a smile- neighbors, family, and friends. As youre baking
or delivering, dont forget to share your photos with us
using the hashtag #lexkidsserve.
3. Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Collection Day is November 15. We encourage
families to pack a shoebox together. Check out the family guide at samaritanspurse.org
to making the most of this experience with your kids.

LBC Students & Volunteers, hard at work in the Gym sorting donations for flood victims

Student Ministry Families,

I want to take a few lines to share how proud I am of our LBC Students. October was filled with a
lot of highs and lows. We experienced so much devastation all across the state last month when
unprecedented rainfall hit South Carolina. We all saw the pictures of houses flooded with water
and businesses destroyed. Many families are still walking through the darkest times of their
lives. Somehow, in the middle of all the heartbreak and darkness, light could be seen through
the actions of people. I watched as your students spent hours and hours packing boxes and
loading bottle waters. These students could have been at the house playing video games, and
yet, they saw a need and jumped on it. I am so thankful for this church, and God continues to
be faithful through the storm.
Parents, I want to see your students get connected into this ministry. We meet on Sunday
Mornings at 10:30 a.m. and on Wednesday nights at 6:15 p.m. in the Family Life Center building.
God is doing some amazing things in the lives of these students. If you ever have any questions
or concerns, please feel free to email or call my anytime.

The Passage & a Wedding Invitation

One of our milestones in the student ministry here at LBC is The Passage,
designed for 7th graders and their parent/parents from April 22 to24. The
Passage is a celebratory time for you and your student as they enter into
their teen years. We would love to partner with you and meet challenges
that come with that head-on, in a way that glorifies God. The Passage will
be held at Ridgecrest Conference Center in North Carolina, and the cost is
$200 per family. You can register by simply emailing Kristen King at kking@
lexingtonbaptist.org. Please prayerfully consider adding this to your calendar this year and take
advantage of your student being a 7th grader in our ministry. There will be a mandatory parent
meeting for this trip on Jan 10 at 5 p.m. in the Family Life Center.

SENIOR ADULTS

& Congregational Care

Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in him, because we
trust in his holy name. Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.

- Psalm 33:20-22, ESV

Weve seen lots of images recently with the South Carolina state motto, While I breathe, I hope, written across
our state flag. Our motto, ignored or forgotten by many, surfaced this summer when the Charleston Nine lost their
lives. In the wake of the flooding that hit S.C. just a few short weeks ago, many South Carolinians clung to the banner of our state motto once again. As of writing this, many people in the Midlands do not have clean water, further
flooding along the coast is imminent and thousands are displaced from their homes. It is encouraging to see men
and women, students, boys and girls make concerted efforts to meet the needs of those who are in a desperate
situation. They are making these efforts even in the midst, perhaps, of their own desperate situations. Most are
grateful because no water breached their homes, power never failed and all their physical needs remained met.
However, theyve pushed back their time to grieve or fought through it by turning off the news and getting out of
their homes to do something, anything, to take their minds off of what has happened around them.
Now is the time to begin processing what weve been through. While I breathe, I hope. While I breathe, I recognize
from Psalm 33 that the Lord is my help and my shield. While I breathe, I thank God for his protection and his provision. While I breathe, I thank him for the strength of his arms to reach around us with grace and peace. While I
breathe, my heart is glad because I trust his holy name. I trust that God will do what he promises. I trust that by
believing and trusting in the name of Jesus Christ, my relationship with God will last forever.
I hope. I hope because I have faith that the good men and women of this state will help put roads
back together again. I hope because homes will be rebuilt. I hope because we will look out for one
another as weve proven time and time again. I hope because I do not hope alone. As a community of believers, we hope in Christ for his steadfast, unending, ever-enduring love will be upon us.
May we continue to find ways to open our homes and our hearts to those who need to breathe
and hope again.

Spending time with family and friends during the holidays can be enjoyable yet stressful. Having to face
the holidays with the memories of burying a family member can be dreadful. LBC will be hosting a Service of Remembrance on Sunday, November 15th at 4 p.m.in our Chapel. We are inviting any who have
lost a loved one (this year or years past) to join us for this special service which includes special music, a
message of hope, as well as an opportunity to light a candle in memory of your loved one. You are invited
to bring a picture of your loved one to display in the Chapel before and during the service. The service
will conclude with light refreshments in the Reception Hall (adjacent to the Worship Center). Our prayer
is that this service will provide hope and comfort with the coming holiday season. Will you make plans
8 now to join us for this special service?

Missions at LBC
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
- 1 Corinthinans 13:3
I am writing this update on October 11th, just a few days after the 1,000 Year Flood. Last week, I
witnessed LBC stand up as a collection and distribution site with no notice. I saw hundreds of our church
members and volunteers from across the community come together in our Family Life Center to unload,
process, sort, and then move tons of much-need relief item across the Midlands. I traveled to numerous
disaster shelters across our area where I met volunteers pouring themselves into helping others. I have
been to homes where scores of volunteers were enduring the tough task of throwing peoples worldly
possessions into piles at the curb and, all the while, the home owners were expressing how blessed they
felt that they and those they loved were safe.
Yes, I have seen faith and hope in the last two weeks but more than that, I have seen love. I have seen
people loving like Christ loves in a genuine, pure, and sacrificial manner. My prayer is after the flood
waters have receded and everything is back to our new normal that as a church we will continue to love
as we never have before.

On October 19th, I will be leaving my position here at LBC to take a staff position with the American Red
Cross as a Disaster Program Manager. We will still be in the area and attending church
here. I must say that serving on the staff here for 19 months has made me even more
committed to LBC. My feelings are a direct reflection of my wonderful relationships
with folks like you.
Thanks for everything.

Orphan Sunday
November 8, 2015

All throughout the month of November, we will be focusing on our

ministry to orphans. Our Families of Hope Ministry is putting
together some wonderful opportunities to inform and inspire us
about how we can love and serve orphans, foster children and
foster and adoptive families.
On Saturday November 7, Johnny Carr, renowned orphan care
advocate and author of Orphan Justice, will be presenting a
community-wide seminar at 5 p.m. in the LBC Fellowship Hall.
Dinner will be provided. This event is free.
On Sunday November 8, we will be having a special Orphan
Sunday worship service at both morning services. Additionally,
there will be an informal drop-in luncheon after the second
worship service to welcome Johnny and get more information about his ministry.
More information about Johnny Carr and his ministry can be found at http://orphanjustice.com/
johnny-carr/
If you would like to be involved in the events on November 7 and 8, please contact Jennifer OCain,
the Families of Hope coordinator at theocaincrew@aol.com.

Our Operation Christmas Child Collection week will be from November 15th through November 22nd
beginning with our special collection service at LBC on the 15th. Collection center hours are posted on
page 11 of The Signal. We have increased our responsibilities with Samaritans Purse from a relay
center to a collection center this year, so the need for volunteers will be even greater. If you would like to
help out with Operation Christmas Child, please contact Jennifer Steele at jennilynn0528@gmail.com.

The Importance of Disciple-Making

Mark 1:16-18 says, As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew
casting a net into the lake, for they were fisherman. Come, follow me, Jesus said, and I will make you
fishers of men. At once they left their nets and followed him. When we read this it becomes very clear
what we have to do in order to become a disciple of Jesus. We have to respond by doing the unthinkable.
Did you notice what the fisherman did when Jesus called them to follow him? They responded by dropping
their NETS and following Him.
Consider for a moment what that meant for those fisherman to drop their nets. It meant leaving behind
their livelihoods. It meant changing who they were and what they had been trained to do. It meant
stepping away from the security they knew and stepping into the uncomfortable. It meant a change of
scenery. It meant a change in priorities. However, it led to a journey they could never have imagined. This
is one of the greatest examples of faith in all of scripture. It took incredible faith to walk away from their
nets and become a follower of Christ.
Put yourself in their place. What will it take for us to become like the fisherman Jesus called? What will
it take for us to drop our nets and follow Christ as His faithful disciples? To be a disciple of Christ means
we will have to respond to Jesus, change our priorities and step out to be a part of an incredible journey.
Let me encourage you with a few ways to leave your nets and become faithful disciples.
1. Disciples identify the NETS in our lives we need to release: Dropping the nets of our lives that entangle
us will allow us to freely follow Christ as a disciple.
2. Disciples become Fishers of Men: We have to become outspoken evangelists armed with the Gospel
of Christ.
3. Disciples read and study Gods Word: Make time daily for reading and studying the word of God. Make
Sunday school a priority each week. Studying Gods word with other believers enriches our lives.
4. Disciples have a dynamic prayer life: Prayer is more than just talking to God; Prayer
is also listening for Gods response.
5. Disciples Make Disciples: When we become a disciple we are actively pursuing ways
to replicate ourselves in the lives of others.
