RESIDENT PROFILE

Ken and Shirley Underwood

Ken and Shirley Underwood are proud to call Port Elgin,
Ontario Canada their home and currently live there, while
adding some fall and spring months in Festival.
Ken grew up on the family dairy farm, which his great
grandfather built in 1906. Shirley was raised in the Fruit Belt
of Ontario, the Niagara Peninsula. They met at Agricultural
College, where Ken was getting an Agricultural Degree, and
Shirley studied Home Economics. They were married in
November 1978 (after the crops came off!) and are
celebrating 37 years this fall.
Ken ran the family dairy farm until 2007 when they sold the
cows. He still operates 300 acres, cash crops the land, and
manages their other real estate properties. He is also an
additional tractor trailer driver for the local milk transport
company. Shirley started working as a travel agent, learning on the job, managed the business, and then started her
own financial planning practice in 1993. During this time
they had four children- three daughters and a son. They
now have three granddaughters. In their early farming years,
they ran a Bed & Breakfast in their home, and farm vacation
holidays in a Century Stone cottage on the same property.
Ken has been very active in dairy organizations at the local
and provincial level, and Shirley has been a Rotarian, and
on the Board for Habitat for Humanity for 12 years. They
are both Global Village team leaders, and Shirley hosted the
first Canadian Global Village Team in 2007. They have both
done Team builds in Cambodia, Ken has been the leader
for two of them, one in Phnom Penh and one in Siem Reap.
They have participated several times building in New
Orleans, and have already completed the initiation course
for the Phoenix Affiliate, and are regulars at the Restore.

started their hunt
for a retirement spot
many years ago, as
they are avid travellers, having visited
Arizona in 1998 with
their children, on a
circletrip from Phoenix to Las Vegas and
the Grand Canyon.
In the interim,
having travelled to
most of the worlds
continents, they knew that winters in their later years
needed to be in the south. The desert and predictable sunny
weather were the deciding factors. They purchased their
Festival home in May 2014, with the prime factor being
green space and privacy.
Ken and Shirley have joined the Players Club and the Swimmers Club and have already competed in their first meet last
November. As hikers, they started by visiting the Maricopa
County Parks this past spring and are keen to do more.
Shirley started up the new sand volleyball interest group
in April 2015, and several great games have already been
played. She has attended Fine Arts Club classes, and Ken is
interested in the Car Club, as they drive their Corvette here
for fun!
Not yet retired from their obligations in Canada, they are
looking forward to spending the full winter in Sun City
Festival starting in the fall of 2016.

Digital Photo Club

- Meeting Information

As a club, we are comprised of residents interested in improving our

photographic skills and willing to share our knowledge with others.
We hold weekly meetings and classes on Tuesday mornings from 10
- 11:30 am. We offer optional day or overnight trips to locations with
photographic value. Club dues are $10 per year for individuals, or
$15 for households. We welcome all Festival residents to attend up to
three club meetings as guests to learn more before making the decision to join. For

Softball Club

- Join us for the 2015-16 Winter Season

The SCF Softball Club will be playing or hosting games
at the Del E Webb Memorial Softball Field, Monday
through Friday starting November 9 until March 2016.
We take Thanksgiving week off, as well as the weeks
of Christmas and New Years.

Monday, Wednesday and Thursday games start at 8:30 am and run until 3:30 pm.
Teams from Festival and other senior communities in the Phoenix West Valley play
each other. Tuesday and Friday games start at 8:30 am through 12 noon. Teams
from Festival play each other.
All Festival residents and guests are invited to come out and watch our games.

The heart, or cardiac muscle, is the strongest, most resilient muscle in

the human body. Over a lifetime, the heart works
24-hours a day. On an average day, the heart beats
100,000 times and pumps about 2,000 gallons
of blood. Over a 70-year lifetime, the heart beats
more than 2.5 billion times.
Sadly, heart disease is the number one or number
two cause of death (and most preventable) for
people in the United States age 25 years or older.
Heart disease includes congestive heart failure
(CHF) in which the heart is weakened and cannot
pump enough blood throughout the body to meet even basic requirements.
Another form of heart disease is coronary artery disease in which the blood
supply to the heart muscle (myocardium) is reduced or stopped due to
blockage in the arteries feeding the muscle. This can lead to death of the
heart muscle and heart attack.
Risk factors for heart disease include age, gender, smoking, obesity,
inactivity, hypertension (high blood pressure), high blood cholesterol, and
diabetes. The good news is that most of the risk factors are controllable.
Exercise and/or medications can control many risk factors and prevent
development of heart disease.
Aerobic or cardiovascular exercise is a great way to
prevent heart disease. A simple daily brisk walk of
30-minutes or more can help control blood pressure,
cholesterol and diabetes. Ideally, we need aerobic
exercise most days of the week for 30-minutes or more.
Brisk walking, bicycling, swimming, jogging, hiking or
other aerobic exercises need to be done at a moderate
effort to elevate the heart rate and bring about some
feeling of exertion. Done consistently over time, aerobic
exercise makes the heart stronger and more efficient
while minimizing the risk factors for heart disease.

Nine and Dine

As part of Troons partnership with Phoenix Childrens Hospital
