INDUSTRIE 4.0

From Vision to Reality

Background and Vision

The SmartFactoryKL is a manufacturer-independent demonstration and research platform and unique in Europe. Here,
innovative information and communications technologies and their application are tested and developed in a realistic,
industrial production environment. We aim to integrate sophisticated information technologies into factory automation. The devices and applications of consumer electronics that are already part of everyday life, e.g., tablet PCs,
smartphones, navigation devices and wireless communication systems, will enrich the traditional working methods
in industry and open the way for more flexible and efficient concepts in the future factory operation.
This brochure informs about the innovative production line which was developed together with the partners of the
SmartFactoryKL and impressively realizes the practical applications of the crucial aspects of INDUSTRIE 4.0.
The technology initiative SmartFactory KL e.V. was was founded in 2005 as a non-profit association to establish a network of industrial and research partners which initiate and implement together research and development projects
ranging from base technologies to the development of marketable products.

FESTO

INDUSTRIE 4.0
From Vision to Reality

MODULE ENGRAVING

Short description of our contribution

The module Engraving unloads the base plate of the business card holder and
applies an individual engraving to it via a CNC-controlled miniature milling
machine. Afterwards, the engraved base plate is rotated and provided on a
workpiece carrier for the further manufacturing process.

Why SmartFactoryKL
Festo joined the manufacturerindependent technology initiative SmartFactory KL e.V. in
2013. The membership enables Festo to closely cooperate with other industrial
enterprises and the science, as
well as adding a high practical
value because now we have
the opportunity to test and develop the interaction of intelligent components from
different manufacturers and
also their mutual networking
under real conditions.

Initializing the digital product memory via RFID

Rotating device for the engraved casing bottom

CoDeSys-Controller (Effectuator)

Workpiece magazines with controller

Our implementation of INDUSTRIE 4.0

As a preliminary stage of cyber-physical systems, the magazine modules
of the module Engraving are
equipped with compact CoDeSysControllers (effectuators) and Ethernet interfaces to achieve full
functionality and to also allow selfdiagnosis. During the process, the intelligent Festo handling modules
initialize the digital product memory
via RFID with a production order. This
production order is loaded through
a http-protocol by the web server of
the higher-level ERP-Systems via an
especially developed web client. According to the product memory, an
individual engraving is applied with
a CNC engraving control, which
means that the production of per-

sonalized products is implemented at

the module level. An integrated OPC
UA server guarantees the problemfree interaction of different modules
beyond proprietary limits. In this way,
information about plant topology,
workpiece-specific energy consumption, and status messages is transferred.

The broad application of INDUSTRIE 4.0 will require new

qualifications over the next
few years. Festo Didactic takes
account of this fact by developing and providing appropriate teaching and research
platforms. The SmartFactoryKL
membership ensures the
recognition of relevant content and their integration into
professional training and education after being didactically
prepared.

The presented, already available technologies offer advantages even today

regarding the development of modular and flexible production plants,
and very clearly point the way to
INDUSTRIE 4.0.

HARTING

INDUSTRIE 4.0
From Vision to Reality

MODULE FORCE FITTING

Short description of our contribution

The HARTING module Force Fitting is the place for central assembly of the two
casing elements. Therefore, the base plate with a mounted RFID transponder
and a holding bracket is provided from the adjacent module via integrated
conveying systems. Through a robot, the HARTING module places the cover
on the base plate and force fits the parts together.

Why SmartFactoryKL
INDUSTRIE 4.0 is taking off.
Summarized in one sentence,
INDUSTRIE 4.0 leads to a transformation of today's factories
into smart factories.

HARTING smart Power Network Unit to manage

the infrastructure

HARTING Module Force Fitting

The interior of a Han-Modular connector

Our implementation of INDUSTRIE 4.0

Continuous interface standardization is the basis for modularization
within the context of INDUSTRIE 4.0
and, therefore, the key for smart factories. HARTING faces this challenge
with a module in its own form factor,
which offers us the opportunity to
derive the special module task from
an existing modular system and to
consequently realize it. Furthermore,
module design according to the
modular principle involves an easy
and especially fast integration,
meaning interoperability, into the
SmartFactoryKL.
A smart factory requires a generic
module infrastructure. The HanModular connector forms the

electromechanical backbone. Our

smart Power Network Unit takes over
the management of data and power
and collects signals concerning the
operating status because only a
smart infrastructure ensures the administration of all industrial lifelines.

Therefore, we are developing

solutions and testing them
within the scope of smart
factories. The SmartFactoryKL
has a special status, because it
offers the possibility of comparing our competence with
other providers. This not only
results in a higher degree of innovation, but is also the basis
for the necessary standardization, because only in this way
interoperability between different automation modules can
be guaranteed. The client has
the ability to select the manufacturing module of the provider that is most suited to his or
her needs, and that is also
most effective at improving
their production efficiency.
Furthermore, the integration
into their own business IT applications increases production flexibility. This requires
interfaces like OPC UA, which
we are testing in the scope of
the SmartFactoryKL .

Today, we know that industrial

needs in connection with INDUSTRIE 4.0 will change significantly. Data volumes in every
area of automation technology
will increase because of intelligent machines, sensors and
actuators. The various manufacturing modules of diverse
manufacturers have to cooperate in complex production
lines. At the same time, the
highest standards regarding
data security and data reliability have to be guaranteed.

Our implementation of INDUSTRIE 4.0

The new SmartFactoryKL-Demonstrator fulfills these new,

industrial requirements for the

The new SmartFactoryKL Demonstrator requires an extremely efficient

communication technology. These
needs go far beyond the usual expectations of a production environment. Large volumes of data have to
be transported, preferably in real
time. Numerous individual participants have to be reliably integrated,
and a very high data security is required.

SPLM event driven technology CEE (Cyclic Event Evaluator) permits for continuous simulation to be run for a
analysis of system cycle time.

Using simulation models allows to visualize and verify concepts in early development
phases.

Our implementation of INDUSTRIE 4.0

For the development of cyber-physical production systems, it is essential
to control the continuous use of information and data across all stages
of development and added value.
Cyber-physical production systems,
in which individual production modules independently organize and
optimize parts of production, need
the ability to simulate processes in
advance. Starting with a conceptual,
digital modeling of the production
plant, every production system receives in parallel with its real development stage, a virtual representation
across all development stages. As
complete digital data about the
plant is provided to all decision makers, concrete models for specific
questions to be simulated can be de-

rived at any time. Due to this ability of

future autonomous production
plants, the technological complexity
in industrial added-value processes
will increase significantly compared
to today's level. The control of this
complexity requires the development
of corresponding software tools for
the design and construction of such
systems and plants and their operation. According to this task, SIEMENS
researches and develops the methodologies and modeling techniques
needed.

Digital Twin

A fundamental part of our activities as the market leader in

the field of industrial automation is the implementation of
an integrated engineering
process for our customers in
the sector of mechanical and
industrial engineering and
their customers, e.g., in the automotive industry. The task is
the implementation of the approach of "Digital Enterprise",
and SIEMENS develops and
provides the corresponding industry software. The INDUSTRIE 4.0 brought this issue
back into focus. Therefore, the
technology initiative SmartFactory KL e.V. offers a very
good demonstrator and research platform to illustrate a
clearly practical and gradual
implementation. It is absolutely essential that longterm development and
modification, which come very
close to real conditions, are intended.
