I will be examining the Chicano people. The Chicano people have experienced
discrimination.. They have been marginalized in a variety of ways This group has been profiled.
as if every Latino is a maid or a farm worker. After the Mexican Revolution in 1910 the Mexican
government could not improve the lives for its citizens. By the 1930s the crop fields became
absolutely nothing. So the Chicanos came to America. But the Chicanos complained because
of the abuse of their labor rights The type of marginalization that I will be examining is the
educational drawback of Chicano people.
One the main issues of bilingual education is language itself. According to PBS lot of
schools brought bilingual education in schools in the 1960s and 70s.Even though language has
been a major feature. of American education since the beginning. Today the debate is that
should immigrant kids be taught all in english or be taught in their native language however at
the same the kids would be taught english. Bilingual education supporters say that the school
should adapt the language not destroy the language and culture. The con people against this
say bilingual education ruins a child ability to learn english quickly. These people believe to
succeed in America you must master the language and its values.
Another issue is ethnic studies.According to Save Ethnic Studies In Tucson,AZ there is an
issue of ethnic studies being in school. The states attorney general Tom Horne who wants to get
rid of TUSD MAS program.. the tool that is going to get rid of this program is called HB 2281
which bans ethnic studies in school. Politicians have ignored the unpredicted success of the
Latino students in the program this program helps keep record of the success of Latino
students on standardized test in addition to sending more of them to college The political issue
is Arizona is a state where Republicans use scare tactics to get voters to think that the crime
problems are caused by Latinos crossing the border. This is a disservice to Latino students
because how are the kids going to get anywhere if the whole world thinks they're criminals.
The last main issue is this question. Do latino students want to go college? According to USA
TODAY 87 percent value higher education and 13 percent have a college degree.94 percent of
latino parents say that it is very important for there kids to go to college 74 percent it is important
for girls to go to college. However for boys it is 71 percent. Most reasons include Latinos do not
have enough money. But Latinos will not borrow money family obligations will interfere in
moreover to teachers who give little support and 54 percent of Latino parents do not care if
their kids to go to college or do not care either way
