LD-NCI process Overview

With the high-speed development of oil exploration technologies, seismic data processing
system (NCI) that based on GPU shows significant superiority than conventional
CPU-based processing system in Pre-stack time migration(PSTM), pre-stack depth
migration(PSDM), especially wave equation PSDM(WEM) and Reverse Time
Migraion(RTM/VTI-RTM/TTI-RTM). Comparing to traditional processing system,
computing time and power consumption of wave-equation-based seismic imaging can be
extremely shortened in GPU system, especially for huge mass data with more than
thousands of sq.kms and with size more than tens of TB. Besides lower computing costs,
a better image quality will be achieved.
Depending on a talented team grouping top specialists on geophysics and computer
science, LandOcean devoted huge human power and financial resources to develop the
CPU/GPU co-parallel seismic data processing system. The system was successfully
developed and putted into operation in 2009. It is the only integrated seismic data
processing system in the world which contains routine processing, GPU-PSTM,
GPU-PSDM, GPU-RTM and running on a CPU/GPU co-parallel computing system.

NCI software introduction

LandOcean processing center now owns more than 1000 GPUs, with more than 200,000
cores, 123 GPU monitor nodes and more than 1000 TB disk storage. Powerful
computational capability is the solid foundation for project performance. In LandOceans
recently finished several huge mass 3D seismic data processing (with data volume size
more than tens of TB ) projects from China and abroad, the final processing result
obtained from this processing system shows advantage over general purpose processing
systems in resolution, steep dip structure imaging and anisotropic processing ,etc.
By combination of the super strong heterogeneous parallel computing together with latest
technology like reverse time migration, etc., NCI seismic data processing system
enhanced the seismic imaging quality and computing efficiency. In application of
processing for different geological-complicated regions, the system presents high-speed
computing, high-speed storage and high-speed communication features.

3D velocity model from west china

NCI is an interactive seismic data processing system, developed based on concept of

integration of data processing and interpretation. With international popular QT
development platform adopted for the graphical interface, with interactive and batch job
submission, and optimized data structure, the system is easy to operate, and is concise
and efficient.
At the same time, with many new concepts of modern interpretation and software
development, the choosing of processing parameter will be easier to fit the trend of
subsurface geological variation. The system can be widely used in seismic data
processing for petroleum, gas, coal, and unconventional shallow oil and gas geological
engineering exploration.

including Demux, geometry setting, refraction first arrival based statics, amplitude
compensation, deconvolution, velocity analysis, residual statics, DMO, amplitude
preserving stacking, pre-stack/post-stack denoise, post-stack migration etc.,
among them there are some distinctive technologies:

NCI software interface

(1)

Software features:
High computing speed. For PSTM, the computing speed is 50 times faster than
conventional CPU computing, without I/O bottleneck.
High expandability. Computation speed in proportion with GPU nodes. Each GPU node
runs independently and suffers no impact from other nodes broken down.
A combination way of interactive processing and batch job submission makes the data
structure to be simple and easy to operate.
Hardware equipment cost is 20% lower than conventional CPU cluster with power
consumption being 70% and space consumption being 80% of the conventional one.
Whereas based on its powerful computing capability, PSDM (WEM/RTM) using one(two)
way equation solution become available.

2 . Kirchhoff PSDM
In current application of seismic imaging technique for complex structures:
Kirchhoff PSTM has become a routine processing module for industry production.
Kirchhoff PSDM and one-way wave equation PSDM are conventional technologies in
seismic data processing but cannot get satisfactory effect for imaging of complicated
subsurface structure, like imaging below salt body in marine data processing. The main
problem lies in processing low S/N ratio data and building accurate velocity model.

3 . One-way wave equation depth migration(WEM)

Features of shot profile one way wave equation module:
a. Parallel management
Single shot data can be distributed to slave nodes and images retrieved after
migration back to the master node. Performance status of each node can be
monitored. Migration can be recovered and continued when power interruption
and system breaking down occurs.
b. GPU migration
Successfully optimizing the 2D/3D wave equation depth migration in GPU system,
we brought the 3D pre-stack two way wave equation migration with highest
imaging precision into production, and provide solutions for seismic imaging of
complex seismic data.
c. Velocity model building and optimization
Initial depth interval velocity model is derived from time migration, and then use
integrative information from both seismic and geology, an accurate depth velocity
model will be built and optimized by using of cell-based topography.
d. Post migration processing and display
Convenient to display and output final migration result in SEGY format after
stacking

Pre-stack depth migration

18

LD- NCI TM process

CPU/GPU co-parallel seismic data processing system

4 . Reverse time migration (RTM)

In contrast to other migration method, RTM uses full wave equation for wave field
continuation and avoid the approximation of oneway wave equation, therefore no dip
limitation will be imposed. Theoretically speaking, RTM method can use turning wave,
prismatic wave or multi- reflected wave to obtain more accurate amplitude dynamic
information and get the amplitude-preserving imaging, meanwhile an accurate velocity
field will be estimated for complex structures. Also RTM can be used to contribute
engineering geological prospecting by providing stable angle domain CIP gathers for
steep dip reflectors.
However, in past years, several technical bottleneck prevent RTM from being used in
practice. On one side, its algorithm performance needs huge computational load. On
the other side, some other aspects like design of absorbing operator and solutions for
frequency dispersion will affect the image quality and also increase the computing
amount in an exponential order way, that is too slow and expensive for traditional
PC-cluster based processing.
Focusing on high intensive, high parallel computing mission faced in seismic data
processing, especially in PSTM and one (two) way wave equation PSDM(WEM/RTM),
LandOcean choose the GPU/CPU co-parallel computing system to support high
intensive computing need of those algorithm and solve the high computing time cost
problem. LandOcean self developed LD-NCI integrated processing system coded
based on GPU-CPU co-parallel computing. The system has largely increased the
seismic data processing capability of LandOcean and earned high praises from both
Chinese and international clients.

Features of LandOcean 3D pre-stack RTM software system:

1. Advanced algorithm

Advanced algorithms are solid foundation for efficient RTM computing and accurate,
reliable and precise RTM imaging. In LandOcean RTM software system, technologies
are adopted as below

Pseudo-spectrum method
High-end imaging technology
High efficiency GPU coding

Decoupling
REM method
PML absorbing boundary
Rapid optimization data storage arithmetic

For VTI-RTM and TTI-RTM, the wave equation can be decomposed into P wave equation
and S wave equation by decoupling equation to eliminate the shear wave term and solve
the shear wave interference problem.

2. Optimized CPU/GPU technology

The system can be run on any type of latest and

fastest Nvidia GPU video card came into market
for the timebeing, but without the storage
limitation of GPU video card.
Optional shot imaging gather output can largely
save the disk storage space.
Cost performance is 10-20 times higher than
conventional CPU-based system.
No temporary file produced during computing.

3. Full-function, easy to use

NCI applications
Depending on a talented team grouping top specialists on geophysics and computer
science, LandOcean devoted huge human power and financial resources to develop the
CPU/GPU co-parallel seismic data processing system. The system was successfully
developed and putted into operation in 2009. It is the only integrated seismic data
processing system in the world which contains routine processing, GPU-PSTM,
GPU-PSDM, GPU-RTM and running on a CPU/GPU co-parallel computing system.
The system has finished several huge mass 3D processing (2000 sq.km) projects in
China.
