FOR BACTERIAL CELLULITIS OF THE EYE

It suppresses protein synthesis by binding to 50 S


subunits of bacterial ribosomes, and therefore
inhibits other antibiotics that act at this site. The
effectiveness can be evaluated by whether or not
the infection is being eliminated.

Fever, serum sickness, sensitization, swelling of


face, myalgia, superinfections, proctitis, vaginitis,
pain, induration, sterile abscess, thrombophlebitis
(IV), hypotension, cardiac arrest, diarrhea,
abdominal pain, flatulence, bloating, nausea,
vomiting, C. Diff, leukopenia, jaundice, abnormal
LVTs, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, skin
rashes, pruritis, dryness, and oily skin.

4. What are the important nursing considerations


related to administering this medication?

Caution use in patients with a hx of GI disease,


severe hepatic disease, atopic individuals, older
adults, during lactation and in pregnancy (class
B). Monitor BP and pulse when giving
parenterally. Monitor diarrhea, can lead to C. Diff.
5. Are there any other special considerations related
to administering this medication based on the
patient population? (i.e. if giving an IM injection to a
newborn, what size needle is needed. If giving a
medication to a pediatric patient, how will it be
given?)
