Tra i progetti in cantiere il Tunnel del Gottardo sotto le Alpi Svizzere ha
l’obiettivo di realizzare il più lungo e veloce tunnel transalpino. La nuova linea
ferroviaria è basata su un sistema di gallerie di oltre 150 km inclusi il tunnel di
base del Gottardo (57Km), dello Zimmerberg (20Km) e del Ceneri (15Km), ha
un costo preventivo di 21 miliardi di Euro e il completamento programmato
per il 2017. Il nuovo collegamento diventerà il primo tratto ferroviario
transalpino "di pianura" (ovvero senza forti pendenze e curve) con
un'altitudine massima di 550 mt s.l.m. Sarà consentita una velocità di 250
km/h. Il tempo di viaggio tra Zurigo e Milano si ridurrà da 4 h 30’ a 2 h 30’.
