BURMA & LAOS

WAT THAT LUANG, VIENTIANE

DEAR ADVENTURER
Join me on a journey to some of the least-explored regions of Indochina: Burma (Myanmar)
and Laos. Relatively new to tourism, these two fascinating Buddhist lands offer a vast array of
dazzling historical sites and natural splendors. We begin in the Burmese capital of Rangoon with
a visit to the Shwedagon Pagoda at sunset—an ethereal complex of striking golden-spired temples
and a mecca for Burmese Buddhists. In fabled Mandalay we explore its superb wooden architec-
ture, pagodas, monasteries, and tapestry workshops, then board a restored colonial riverboat for
a cruise down the Irrawaddy River to the 11th-century capital of Pagan. Comprised of literally
thousands of temples, we visit many stunning ancient exa mples, including revered reliquary
shrines, a glistening whitewashed Mon temple, and a Bamar-style brick pagoda. Additional high-
lights and a phenomenon found nowhere else in the world, are the floating gardens of Inle Lake,
as well as the unique boaters who row dexterously with their legs, and a lakeside cave housing
thousands of Buddha images.

As we continue toward Laos, enjoy two nights at Antantara Golden Triangle Resort, one of the
most luxurious spa resorts in all of Th ailand. A two-day cruise into the rarely visited heart of
inner Laos down the Mekong River offers a view of daily rural life and we visit colorful markets
where we have the opportunity to meet the lovely minority tribes-people. We also stop to explore
the famed Buddhist caves at Pak Ou and spend a night right along the banks of the Mekong at a
serene teakwood lodge. Our cruise finishes in the charming town of Luang Prabang, once home
to the royal family. Its palace, pagodas, lovely temples, and truly exotic markets make this World
Heritage Site Laos’ top attraction. Our last stop is the capital of Vientiane, where an unforgettable
experience awaits us as we explore the city’s monuments, temples, and markets. As one of the first
tour leaders to some of these regions, I look forward to sharing my knowledge and passion for the
natural and cultural wonders that we explore. Most of all, it will surely be the encounters with
the welcoming people who make this magical corner of the world an unforgettable and highly
meaningful experience.

Warmest regards,

Gary Wintz
Expedition Leader
