Veterans Service Officer

Work Schedule: 8:00am-4:00pm, M-F

Incumbent serves as Service Officer for Veterans Affairs, responsible for providing assistance
and information to eligible veterans, their spouses, dependents, and/or survivors. Incumbent will
be charged with the responsibility of transitioning the County to the electronic claims
management system, when approved by the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs (IDVA).
Duties:
Assists veterans, their spouses, dependents, and/or survivors with filing applications/claims for
benefits (in, including interviewing, evaluating needs, providing information, literature and
counseling, and completing application forms. Forwards completed application forms to
Veterans Administration (VA) or other appropriate agencies.
Assists in obtaining supporting evidence for benefit applications as needed, such as birth and/or
death certificates, divorce records, and military service records. Assists in fling appeals of
unfavorable decisions.
Ensures maintenance of confidential records for each client. Maintains log of assistance provided
to veterans. Prepares and submits activity summaries and statistical reports to Indiana
Department of Veterans Affairs (IDVA) and/or County officials as required.
Represents veterans concerns to city/county agencies as needed. Makes public speaking
presentations to various groups as requested. Maintains a working relationship and supports
local Veterans organizations such as VFW, American Legion, etc.
Maintains frequent communication with IDVA personnel, including inquiring about delayed
benefits, resolving conflicts, and determining appropriate procedures and actions.
Maintains Current knowledge of regulations governing veteran benefits, maintains inventory of
current reference materials, and distributes brochures, forms, and applications, and related
materials to local community organizations and individuals. Prepares/submits press releases
regarding changes in benefits.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
High School Diploma or GED
Must be able to provide proof of completion of at least 6 months of active service in the armed
forces of the United States and honorable discharge status.
Must be a citizen of the United States.
Must be a resident of Indiana for at least 5 years immediately preceding employment in the
position.
Must meet all other applicable hiring and retention requirements of Indiana State code, including,
but not limited to, ability to satisfactorily complete oral and written examinations for
certification/recertification.
Ability to supervise and direct assigned personnel, including interviewing applicants, making
hiring recommendations, planning/making work assignments, providing training and corrective
instruction, evaluating performance, and maintaining discipline.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing; ability to work on several tasks at the
same time and complete assignments effectively amidst frequent distractions and interruptions.
Ability to work autonomously with little to no supervision.
Must be computer literate with experience in applications such as: Word, Excel, Power Point,
Outlook, Adobe, etc.
