The terms of the Fourth Edition oft he Conditions of Contract for WorbofCi' il
Engineering Construction ha,-e been prepared by thf F~Mration lntNnationale
des lngo!nieurs Con-eils ~~-IDIC) and are re<:ommen<.led for general u>e for the
purpo>e of construction of ~uc'h worh where tenders are imited on an
international basis. The Conditions are equally ;uitable for use on domestic
contracts

In the preparation of the Conditions it was recognised that while there are
numerous Clauses which \\ill be generally applicable there are 1ome Clau.<es
whichmustnecessarily,arytotakeacwuntofthecircumstanc6andlocalit;-of
theWorks.TheCiausesofgeneralapplicationhavebeengroupedtogetherinthis
document and are referred to as Part I -General Conditions. They ha,-e been
printed ina form which will facilitate their indusion asprintedinthecontract
documents normally prepared
The General Conditions are linked with the Conditions of Particular
Application, referred to as Part II, by the corresponding numbering of the
Clauses, so that Parts I and lltogethercomprise theConditionsgoerningthe
rightsandobligationsofthepartie>

FIDIC anticipates publishing shortly a new edition of its booklet "Notes on
Document-> for Civil Engineering Contract>" (1977 reprinted 1979) which will
include comments on pro,tsions of the Fourth Edition of the Conditions. Users

ReclamationWor~

SpecialconsiderationmustbegiventoPartllwheredredgingandcertaintype<;of
reclamation work are involved. Dredgersareconsiderablymoreexpensivethan
most items ofComrac10r's Equipment and the capital valueofadredgercan
oftene"erothevalueoftheComractonwhichitisu~d

Forthisreason,itisintheinterestsofboththeEmployerandtheContractorthat
adredgcrisoperatedintensivelyinthemosteconomicfashion,subjecttothc
quality of work andanyotheroverriding factors. With this end in view, it is
customarytoallowtheContractortoexecutedredgingworkcontinuouslybyday
andbynightsevendaysaweek.Anotherdifferencefrommostcivilengineeringis
thatondredging,orktheComracrorisnotnormallyhcldro:sponsibleforthe
remedyingofdefectsafterthedateofcompletionascenifiedunderCiause48
