Task 1

You want to assess a lesson taught during your teaching practice. By what criteria will
you evaluate it? Make a list of possible criteria for evaluating lesson effectiveness and apply it to
your lesson. Dont forget to attach your initial lesson plan.
Among the criteria that should be taken into consideration when evaluating lesson
effectiveness I would include the following:

The progression of the lesson

The effectiveness of each stage of the lesson
The variety of activities and of interactions
Classroom management skills
The teachers attitude towards the students possible learning difficulties
The use of materials/ resources
The achievement of the initial aims of the lesson
Applying the above mentioned criteria to my lesson, I would evaluate it as follows: The

stages of the lesson were effective, the lesson progressed fluidly, but the passing from the
reinforcement of telling the time to the new lesson, namely adjectives describing physical
feelings, was a bit abrupt and it should have been done by using a link, such as asking the
students how they feel at a particular time of the day and eliciting answers that would introduce
the new lesson smoothly.
There was enough variety in the activities, as the pre-reading activity and the postreading activity proposed different exercises for the students, such as making hypotheses about
the dialogues by using visual information, matching the dialogues with the corresponding
pictures, identifying the main idea of each dialogue and identifying specific information in the
dialogues through a multiple choice activity. The presentation of new vocabulary was also
followed by a variety of exercises such as finding the opposite adjectives in a crossword, using
some of the adjectives to describe themselves, matching the adjectives with their definition,
describing their desk mates using 5 of the adjectives and providing reasons for their choices. The
types of interaction were sufficiently varied as well, as there has been teacher whole class
interaction, teacher student interaction and student student interaction.

In organizing the class, the teacher managed to engage the students in the activities,
expressed the instructions clearly and made sure that every student understood the tasks. The
teacher also changed position appropriately, making sure that the students can complete the tasks
without problems.
The students learning difficulties were well anticipated and the teacher responded to
them by offering further explanations in the target language, contextualizing the unknown words
and when required using the translation of the words which the students did not understand.
The teacher used audio and visual materials: the CD for listening to the dialogues, the
course book, the board and handouts for presenting the new vocabulary. All the materials used
were suitable and relevant for the lesson.
The aim of the lesson was successfully achieved as the students solved without problems
the exercises proposed for the pre-reading activity and for the post-reading activity and they were
able to use correctly the new vocabulary.
