Ground Control
Frequency at KLAX: 121.65

Ground Control owns all ground movement areas of the airport, including all taxiways and inactive or
closed runways, except for those taxiway located between the left and right runways of the north and south
complexes, which are owned by the Tower controller. Ground control does not own any active runways,
and may not taxi aircraft across an active runway without prior approval from the Tower controller.

Responsibilities of the ground controller

1. The ground controller only has the right to provide taxi instructions only after he has been issued
the correct IFR or VFR clearance.
2. The controller must provide correct taxi instructions to the correct runway based on their direction
of flight.
3. Advise aircraft, if they don’t contact you with the current ATIS or they “have numbers”, the
current wind and altimeter settings, and also provide VFR aircraft with the ceiling and visibility if
the weather is below VFR conditions.
4. If there is a gate hold on an aircraft do not allow the aircraft to startup until their release time is
reached.

When should certain runways be in use?

1. 25 L- ILS and visual approaches
2. 25 R- Departures
3. 24 L- Departures
4. 24 R- ILS and visual approaches
5. Noise Abatement Operations
a. 25 L- Departures
b. 25 R- Closed

Working with Helicopters and Airships

Both helicopters and airships are capable of vertical takeoffs and landings, the use of a runway for landings
and departures are not necessary or desirable (in most cases). As most helicopters are not equipped with
wheels, taxiing a helicopter involves two methods.
1. Hover Taxi- This instructs the aircraft to proceed at a slow speed above the surface, normally
below 20 knots in ground effect.
2. Air Taxi- This allows the aircraft to proceed expeditiously from one point to another, normally
below 100 feet AGL at airspeeds above 20 knots.
