Answer 22 Various communities have evolved different techniques for storing rain
water.
In hilly regions, people have developed channels known as kul or gul for diverting the
river bodies for the development of agriculture.
In arid regions of Rajasthan, people collected rooftop water in order to store water in an
underground structure. They also used the agricultural fields as water storage structures.
This made the soil moist. People built johad, a rainwater storage tank which collected
rainwater and was used for drinking purposes of humans and cattle.
In Bengal, people built various channels for diverting the river or canal water to their
agricultural fields. This ensured regular supply of water.

Answer 24 Though per capita income is generally used as an index of measuring the
development of a country, it is not exactly the flawless measure. Apart from per capita
income, other important aspects of developments are the literacy and health ratio of the
people in a country. This can be explained with the help of a table given below:
Per Capita
Income for
2002-03 (in Rs)

Infant
mortality
Rate
(2003)

Literacy
Rate (%)
(2001)

Net Attendance

State

In this table, we find that the state of Punjab has more per capita income than the state of
Kerala. However, the infant mortality rate in Punjab is much higher than the state of Kerala.
Similarly, the literacy rate and the net attendance rate in Kerala are higher than Punjab.
It is clear from the table that though the average person in Punjab has more income than
the average person in Kerala but lags behind in crucial areas like literacy rates. Therefore,
per capita income is not a correct index of measuring the development of the country.

Answer 25 In the proto industrial system, the merchants were based in towns but the
work was done mostly in the rural hinterland. A merchant clothier in England purchased
wool from a wool stapler and carried it to the spinners; the yarn that was spun was taken
in subsequent stages of production to the weavers, to the fullers and then to the dyers. The
finishing was done in the city of London before the export merchant sold the cloth in the
international market. London, therefore, came to be known as the finishing centre in this
proto-industrial system, while the rural areas worked in close co-ordination to justify this
epithet.

Answer 28 Earlier, only men were supposed to engage in public affairs, vote and contest
for public office. However, gradually gender issues were raised in the political arena.
Women in different parts of the world organised themselves and struggled for equal rights.
These feminist movements demanded enhancing the political and legal status of women
and improving their educational and career opportunities. More radical movements even
demanded an equal status in personal and family life.
Answer 29 The processes of urbanisation and industrialisation affected the institution of
family in a profound way. It loosened the ties of the family and led to a gradual breaking
down of the institution of marriage among the working classes. On the other hand, upper
and middle class women faced increasingly higher levels of social and interpersonal
isolation. At the same time, their lives were made much easier by the practice of hiring
domestic maids for cooking, cleaning and babysitting. Women of the lower classes,
particularly those who worked for wages, had some control over their lives. However,
many social reformers felt that women needed to be pushed back into homes in order to
save and reconstruct the institution of family.
