The Great Holy Feast of The Entrance into the Temple of the Blessed All Holy
Infant Virgin Mary, is also referred to as The Presentation at the Temple.
This is one of the Great Holy Feast Days of the Eastern Orthodox Church, which is
celebrated on 21 November or 4 December, according to the Gregorian, Julian
and Revised Julian Calendars.
According to Holy Tradition and Custom, the Blessed Virgin Mary was presented by
her elderly, Righteous Parents St Joachim and St Anna according to their
Solemn Vow of Dedication to the Lord our God, at the Temple in Jerusalem, at the
very young age of three years.
This unique young Child lived happily within the confines of the great Temple until
She reached puberty, which was when all the young Virgins who had also been
Dedicated to the Service of God at the Temple had to leave in order to be married
and begin to bear children.
Although it seems heart-wrenching to most of us, parents who had prayed for many
years for the Divine Gift of children, when at last Blessed with offspring, would
dedicate their beloved young girls and boys to God by presenting them to the
Temple in Jerusalem and leaving them there to serve God and to receive Spiritual
Education and Enlightenment.
At the time of our Lady Theotokos infancy, the Great Temple of Jerusalem was being
refurbished and restored, so much help was needed of many different skills.
One of the earliest sources of these accounts is the non-canonical Protoevangelion of
St James or the Infancy Gospel of St James.
Having been weaned from Her adoring Mothers breast, the little girl who was to open
the Doors to our Eternal Salvation according to the Divine Will of the Holy
Trinity, was led in a joyful procession to the Temple in Jerusalem, where a
familiar relative of Hers waited to welcome Her.
He was the High Priest, St Zacharias, who would in later years become by the Divine
Grace and Will of Almighty God, the Righteous Father of St John the Baptist and
Forerunner to Christ our Lord and Saviour.
The extraordinary Ever Blessed Virgin Mary, never ceased to amaze all who watched
Her grow up and become our most Perfect Example of genuine, natural Humility
and Obedience to God in all ways possible two of Her Holy Virtues that far
exceeded even the Most Unique and Exceptional Honour of being the Mother of
God Incarnate, our Lord Jesus Christ, which He particularly pointed out many
years later.
With unbridled, innocent Joy, that tiny Holy Virgin entered the confines of the great
Temple - unafraid and confident, as though She could not wait to begin Her
Divine Mission!
Many of the most exquisitely woven and embroidered Liturgical Vestments and
Temple Adornments, were made by the hands of our Lady Theotokos, as well as
all the other young girls who resided there with Her.
So it was, that upon crossing that Hallowed threshold, She astonished everyone by
running all by herself up the steep steps into the Holy of Holies (which under
normal circumstances was closed to everyone except the High Priest who entered
only on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) to offer the Blood Sacrifice for his
own sins as well as the sins of all the people.)

Those who understood the Holy Prophecies must have gasped in wonder, for She
would, Herself, become the Holy of Holies while carrying our God Incarnate in
Her Most Holy Womb.
She would become the Living Sanctuary and Holy Temple or Dwelling Place of the
Divine Child Who would take on Her flesh and bone, and become our Incarnate
God-Man our Eternal Saviour.
Thus the Holy Orthodox Church also regards this Great Feast as that which marked
the end of the physical Temple in Jerusalem as the only Dwelling Place of
Almighty God.
Until She reached maturity and would have had to leave the Temple together with all
the other young women, our Lady Theotokos was the best example to Her
companions of how to study Holy Scripture, how to pray throughout the hours of
the day, how to apply oneself to all labours and tasks no matter how humble or
demanding.
She applied Herself with great attention to all Her duties - to God especially - and to
others both young and old. She seldom ate but Her Nourishment was
maintained by Mysterious means. Her sweet nature and disposition made Her
Beloved by all who came into contact with Her, and this continued throughout
Her earthly lifespan and even now, continues in Eternity.
Just as She was the best model for Her companions to imitate and follow in all aspects
of their life at the Temple and even afterwards, so too, do we strive to attain Her
most beautiful Virtues and Her unconditional Love for others.
But the most exceptional Virtue whereby She was elevated by God as even higher,
more glorious and more honourable than the highest Orders of Heavenly Angels,
was Her absolute Humility and Obedience that drew all the other Holy Virtues to
Her soul.
From a very young age, compelled by Her utter Love of and devotion to God, our
Lady Theotokos had made a Vow of Chastity, which She fulfilled forevermore
thereafter.
Today, we celebrate this extraordinary human being who shows us so clearly the
kind of person whom God created us to be.
She did not possess anything different from us. She did not have superhuman
powers. She also had the ability to commit sin - and She must have been tempted
to a far greater degree than any of us will ever be, yet She resisted and She
concentrated on all the Goodness and Love of God.
If She did ever fall, I am sure She would have immediately Repented and corrected
Herself without fail!
Although our Lady Theotokos had received the best possible education available at
that time, there must have been so many things that She could not understand,
but She trusted implicitly in the Lord our God, knowing without any doubt that
He would Enlighten Her whenever necessary.
Today, as we celebrate this delightful Feast Day, let us keep in our heart and in our
mind let us contemplate - those extremely Wise Words that our Beloved Lord
Jesus Christ spoke, when He referred to the superior Virtue of His All Pure Mother:
Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and keep it!
With Love in Christ
