Guide to Personal Spiritual Gifts Assessment

(Due ____, 1-2 pages, double spaced as always)
Before you fill out one of the inventories, summarize your convictions from the questions 1-3a below.
After your summary, fill out an inventory and discuss the findings, reflecting on questions 3b to 6.
Do not simply copy/submit the inventory and results. That is not the point.

Write and submit this paper:

1. Convictions about Spiritual Gifts - We should have a clear set of biblically based convictions about Spiritual
Gifts. If you dont, it is appropriate to describe your present opinions or say Im not sure. State if you are open
to other points of view. What are your views on the following (please dont defend your views, just briefly state them):
a. Are miraculous/sign gifts for today? (Are they operating today or have they ceased?
This question is NOT "are miracles still happening today?")
b. How many spiritual gifts are there: Do you see the list of gifts in operation today as closed? (If so, how many
gifts are operating today?) OR do you see the list of gifts as open (there may be more gifts than those listed)?

2. Choose A Spiritual Gifts Inventory Which inventory did you choose? Give the name (and the author and
source if you can find it). Note several things about the survey:
a. How many gifts does it include 7, 9, 19, 20, 27, more? Compare this list to the class notes listing the
20 gifts from the major biblical gift lists (Rom 12, 1 Cor 12, Eph 4). What are the differences?
b. Does the inventory include any of the sign gifts (tongues, interpretation of tongues, miracles, healing) or any
of the somewhat controversial gifts of apostle, prophecy, word of knowledge, word of wisdom?
c. Does it include any of the Other Gifts celibacy, voluntary poverty, martyrdom, hospitality, missionary,
intercession, exorcism? If so, describe. Any others?
d. Does the spiritual gift inventory you used match your convictions/opinions about the number and kinds of
spiritual gifts operating today? If not, why not?

3. Use the Inventory

a. Before you fill out the inventory, what top 3 spiritual gifts did you think you have? What spiritual gifts or
ministry strengths have others affirmed, pointed out, thanked you for, or encouraged you in?
b. Now fill out and score the inventory. What gifts did the gift inventory identify as your top 3 strongest gifts?
Your other gifts?
c. Compare to your inventory results with the gifts you thought you had before you took the inventory. Why do
you think there are differences?

4. Breadth of ministry experience the most important means of discovering your spiritual gift(s) is actively
serving the Lord in a variety of ways and seeing what happens. As you grow and serve, in time you will realize
which kinds of service the Lord blesses with: spiritual power, impact in others, and passion in your own heart.
a. How long have you been a believer, and how long have you been actively serving in ministry?
b. How wide (what kind of variety) has your service been? Give a numerical answer and explain:
1
No Service
Yet

3
Focused on 1 or 2
kinds of service

Experienced several
kinds of service

Tried many kinds of

ministries, wide experience

5. Personal Motivation What aspects of ministry, the church, the work of God grip your heart and motivate you
the most? Which ministry skills have you seen develop the fastest in your life? Why is that?

6. Personal Strengths Consider your related strengths (temperament, natural abilities, acquired skills). What
other strengths do you have that relate to your primary spiritual gifts? How do they relate?
