Utah URI

In 2009 the Utah URI continues to support the Utah

Interfaith Power and Light in its efforts through education,
energy audits, and special programs focusing on climate
changeSee: http://www.utahipl.org/uri.html
Utah URI continues to
Support Africa in 2009
Utah URI continues also, its direct association with Father Centurio
in Uganda and Interethnic Health Alliance (IHA).

Engineers without borders has joined with IHA and Fr. Centurio in
Uganda and many places, also the Temple of Understanding (a URI
CC in NewYork) has also helped with a large amount of funds for
Father C. having known him for some time.  They have solar power
in the Uganda Orphanages and Father has a field now for growing
crops for the children it has made a big difference. Carry Ritchey
and Marsha Pilgeram went to Uganda some time ago and Carry
had raised enough money at her school to buy mosquito nets for all
the childrens beds. They were the first three woman on the
mountain which is next to the Elgin Volcano.  Dr. John Shavers
(IHA / Utah URI) has been to Uganda twice now with Engineers
without borders and met with Father each time, most recently last
summer with work on solar PV and
solar ovens.

A fundraiser is scheduled for March 27, 2010 and it appears that

Father Centurio may very well be in Utah in June.  Events will be
planned; see the website way above for more info. Father Centurio Olaboro from

additional classrooms, six teacher offices, to compliment the

o Install a solar water pump

In addition the project will explore possible new programs and projects to to educate the larger global
public on the need and value of supporting education programs in Africa.
UPEC

Summary of Major Activities

for the Utah Population and Environment Coalition (UPEC) for the year 2009.
Prepared by Wayne Martinson, Chair, Utah Population and Environment Coalition

1. A major effort was to begin the research for the Utah Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) study for Utah. This study will be a valuable
companion piece to the Utah Ecological Footprint Study. Erica Gaddis and Gunseli Berik are the project leaders. A technical team was
formed and a meeting held on August 11, 2009. Other individuals have also worked on the report. A draft report will likely be ready in early
spring 2010 and a final report will likely be released to the public in late spring, or early summer 2010. Funds were raised to pay for the
completion of the report. Additional funds will be sought in 2010 to help with dissemination.

2. In June 2007, UPEC completed the study on Utah’s Ecological Footprint. The report is on the website at www.utahpop.org/vitalsigns.
Presentations regarding this study continued. Sandra McIntyre presented on Utah’s Ecological Footprint at a Stegner Center Green Bag
Lunch on Jan. 20. On October 29, Sandra McIntyre presented at a U of U environmental studies class. There were about 25 students in the
class and there was good interest. Information about the Ecological Footprint was distributed at the various booths and was on the UPEC
website. Wayne talked about population, the ecological footprint study and UPEC at a class that Missy Bird teaches at the University of Utah
on Nov. 17.

3. There were two Roundtable lunches in 2009. The February 17 Roundtable lunch had approximately 30 people in attendance. Erica Gaddis
did a great job of presenting on the upcoming Utah Genuine Progress Indicator Report. At the Sept. 22 Roundtable lunch there were
approximately 35 people. Dr. Hans Ehrbar presented on, “Starting a Vision for Utah: A Prosperous and Dynamic Economy without
Growth.” People were interested in the topic and the food was great.
UPEC
Summary of Major Activities for 2009 continued

4. UPEC had booths or information at six different major events in 2009. Andy Schoenberg shared UPEC information including the Utah Ecological
Footprint for an Earth Day event at the Ogden Nature Center. On July 18, Andy and Mieke Schoenberg brought the eco-trike and UPEC materials to
an “I Love Utah” event at Thanksgiving Point. We did not have a booth at the UEA convention on Oct. 1 and 2 as in previous years. However, the
Utah Society for Environmental Education booth did have the Utah Ecological Footprint flyer available. On October 24, UPEC had a booth at the
350.org event at the Main Salt Lake Library. Andy brought his eco-trike and UPEC materials. The event was well attended. On Nov. 6, UPEC had a
booth at the Share Fair at the Bioneers Conference at Westminster College. UPEC had a booth at the Utah Society for Environmental Education
conference on Nov. 19 though Nov. 21. On Nov. 20 Andy was at the booth during the Share Fair.

5. Ann O’Connell and Wayne Martinson represented UPEC on a planning committee for the Stegner Symposium on sustainability. (This symposium
will be March 12 and 13, 2010 and the brochure which came out in Jan. 2010 says “The Wallace Stenger Center appreciates the contributions of the
Utah Population and Environment Coalition, . . . in organizing and planning this symposium.”

6. UPEC worked extensively with Steve Ritchey to update its website. The updates were mostly completed in 2009.

7. UPEC is listed in the 2009 Re-Direct Guide as “Promoting sustainability in Utah.” The Re-Direct Guide provides information on sustainable
practices and businesses along Utah’s Wasatch Front.

8. UPEC signed on as a Coalition Partner for a Campaign for a Nuclear Weapons Free World.

9. In November 2009 a letter was sent in support of the Utah Museum of Natural History Utah Futures Project. The Utah Futures Project could
include the Ecological Footprint information.

10. Information about population and sustainability was shared at UPEC Board meetings. A major report came out titled Prosperity without Growth
by Tim Jacobson. The book by Lester Brown called Plan B 4.0 came out in 2009. Lester Brown says that he does not think the world will be able to
support the 9.1 billion people that the U.N forecasts as a medium population projection for 2050. Plan B 4.0 has a goal of supporting eight billion. Al
Gore has a new book out called Our Choice. The book includes a chapter on population.
UPEC
Summary of Major Activities for 2009 continued

11. In Utah, Radio West on KUER had a program on how a person could reduce their ecological footprint by having fewer children, thanks to a
study from Oregon State University. Elize Lazar had an opinion piece on population in the Sunday Salt Lake Tribune. The Salt Lake Tribune had two
opinion pieces by Casey Jones regarding population. Andy Schoenberg responded to one of these on the Tribune website. A December 2, 2009
article in the Salt Lake Tribune was titled, Utah’s latest baby boom dwindles. The article said that Utah mothers had significantly fewer babies for
“the first time since the early 1990s.” Although, Utah women remain the nation’s most fertile, though, averaging 2.5 children.”

12. UPEC board meetings were held monthly in 2009, except for February and July. During these meetings there was planning for various efforts
mentioned. We also talked about working more closely with other organizations such as Sustainable Utah.

13. Board members and others attending meetings are frequently involved in other sustainability efforts including solar power, Utah Interfaith Power
and Light, family planning, community gardens, and legislative items. These involvements are shared at Board meetings.

14. An annual meeting was not held in 2009. Election of board members was postponed until 2010.

From the above information an estimated 2,000+ people were involved in or impacted by UPEC activities in the year 2009. This is from direct
contact at meetings, presentations and booths as well as people using the UPEC website including the Ecological Footprint information.

ArtForms
Summary of Major Activities for 2009 from
Sabina Zunguse, Project Director

The Art Forms program continues to expand with

new partnerships this year with Salt Lake
Community College Women’s Business Institute,
the Utah Refugee Coalition, and the Arts Council

This past year in addition to teaching the African

refugee woman sewing skills to develop a skill,
the program also offered two courses in:

o textiles
o entrepreneurial financial literacy

The women learned how to make their own dresses. They attained a certificate for completing the sewing classes
taught by an adjunct professor of Salt Lake Community College who was paid through and Arts Council grant.

The women in the program are continuing to become more self sufficient and self-reliant and are working to
eventually open their own business.
