Please follow all the Instructions to Candidates given on the cover page of the answer book.
All parts of a question should be answered consecutively. Each answer should start from a fresh page.
Assumptions made if any, should be stated clearly at the beginning of your answer.
Q.1 (a)
Q.1 (b)
Q.2.
Redraw the circuit shown in the figure 1 after replacing the 10V source with equivalent
current source
Calculate the current through the 20 resistor using superposition theorem.

Determine the current through the capacitor in the circuit shown in figure 2 using Thevenins
theorem.

Q.3. A 1000V / 200V, 50Hz, 10KVA single phase transformer when tested gives the following
readings, measured on the primary side.
[6]
Q.4 (a)
Q.4 (b)
Q.4 (c)
What are the conditions under which a self-excited D.C shunt generator will not develop
E.M.F?
A D.C shunt generator has 4 poles, 300 conductors wound as lap windings. Calculate the
E.M.F induced when the prime mover is running at 600 RPM. The flux set up by the main
field winding is 100mWb.
When the above mentioned generator is loaded, what are the reasons for the load voltage
to be less than the induced E.M.F?

Q.5. A D.C shunt motor, rated for 200V, 10 KW, 1450 RPM takes 2A on no load. The armature and
field resistance are 1 and 200 respectively.
[6]
(a) What should be the resistance to be connected in series with the armature so that the
starting current is not more than two times the full load current of the motor?
(b) When the motor is fully loaded, taking 50 A from the mains, calculate the speed and
efficiency of the motor.
(c) If the same motor is operated as D.C shunt generator, delivering 50A at 200V to a load,
calculate the efficiency of the D.C generator.
Q.6. A three phase synchronous generator has the following per phase specifications.
Terminal voltage per phase:
11KV
Phase current:
1000 A at unity power factor
Per phase resistance:
0.01
Per Phase synchronous reactance: 0.15
(a) Calculate the voltage regulation of the generator.
(b) Draw the phasor diagram.
[5]
Q.7. A 3 phase, 4 pole, 50 Hz induction motor runs at 1450 RPM on full load, taking 10 A per phase
with 0.8 pf lagging current from the mains
[5]
Q.8. Draw the wave form at the Node 2 shown in the rectifier circuit (figure 3) with proper
explanation (assume that diodes are ideal) and also explain how will be the output if the diodes
are non-ideal.
Figure 3
If the intention is to generate a smooth DC output of 2V (tolerance = 0.5V) from the circuit
shown in figure 3, explain what circuitry has to cascaded to the rectifier circuit above with
proper diagrams (assume ideal diodes only).
[6]
Q.9. A digital circuit has to be designed to automate the filling of overhead tanks. The overhead
tank has three level sensors S1, S2 and S3 (generate HIGH signal when water is sensed).
Sensor S1 is placed near bottom of tank, Sensor S2 at the middle and S3 at the top of the
tank. There are three separate valves V1, V2 and V3 controlled by three separate motors M1,
M2, and M3 respectively (ON when high is given to motor which in turn open valves) through
which water will flow into the tank. The system designed should meet the following
requirements
[6]
1.
2.
3.
4.
Three valves (V1, V2 and V3) should be open when water is below sensor A
Two valves (V1 and V2) should be open when water is below Sensor B and above
sensor A
One valve (V1) should be open when water is below sensor C and above sensor B.
All valves should be closed when the water reaches sensor C.
