You may as soon find a living man that does not breathe, as a living Christian that does not pray.
Matthew Henry
What is prayer?
We all know that prayer is talking to God. It is one way we communicate with Him. However, for
many, prayer tends to be a complicated and confusing task; which is why many tend to push it to
the side or avoid it altogether until they are in a crisis. The important thing to realize is that
prayer grows out of relationship, and for relationship and true communication to take place, both
parties must be involved.
Prayer is more than just talking to God; prayer is also God speaking to us. So while in prayer we
share our needs, sorrows, joys, thanksgiving and praise, we also need to take time to be silent and
listen for His voice; just as Mary sat at Jesus' feet and listened.
Prayer is talking to God and God speaking with us; and it is building a deep and lasting
relationship with the Creator of the universe!
Why do we pray?
Prayer is one way of developing a relationship with Jesus Christ. Relationship requires
communication and prayer is a vital part of that communication. While it is true that He speaks to
us through His Word, He also wants to speak to us through prayer. Communication happens
through many different means, and prayer is one of them. Prayer is a very intimate form of
communication with God because it is so personal.
Through prayer we have the opportunity to open up the deepest and most hidden areas of our
heart, areas that maybe no one else has seen. We can do this without shame, because He has
already seen those areas of our heart. It is also Him speaking directly to us a message that is
meant only for us. This intimate exchange of heart helps us to draw closer to Him. The closer we
draw to Him, the more like Him we become. The more we know Him, the
more powerful and effective our prayers become; which leads to a second
reason for prayer.
Prayer is also an effective means of extending the kingdom of God on earth. Jesus said, Let your
kingdom come, let your will be done. God often chooses to limit Himself to the prayers of His
people. While He is Almighty and can do anything, He often chooses to limit His might and power
to include us in the task. Through our prayers, hearts are softened to the gospel, people are
healed, lives are changed, and those bound to sin are set free. Prayer is partnering with God to see
His kingdom advanced on earth! We pray because we want to draw closer to Him; and we pray so
that others may draw closer to Him, as well.
How to pray:
There are 2 methods that you can use for your prayer time:
1. A.C.T.S. Prayer
This is a well-known form of prayer that is easy to remember:
A stands for adoration. Begin the prayer by simply adoring God for who He is.
C stands for confession. Spend some time confessing your sins.
T stands for thanksgiving. Take time to thank God for the blessings that He has given to you and
your family.
S stands for supplication. Lift up specific areas of your life in which you need God to supply for
your needs.
2. Five Finger Prayer
Thumb (people who are close to you) These are your close friends and family, often the first you
think about when you pray. Give thanks to God and ask his protection on your parents, siblings,
friends, and classmates.
Pointer (people who point the way) These are leaders in your life, such as teachers and pastors.
Offer God your thanksgiving for them and ask him to help them in their important work.
Tall Finger (people in authority) The big people in the world need prayer too. Ask God to give
wisdom to our government, military, and police.
Ring Finger (people who are weak) This is your weakest finger. We should remember others
who are sick, live in poverty, or are treated badly. Pray that Jesus would give them new strength.
Little Finger (your own needs) God wants to hear your needs too, especially when you put
others first. Pray for your own growth in mind, body, and spirit.
Dont pray when you feel like it. Have an appointment with the Lord and keep it.
A man is powerful on his knees.

Praying Scripture:
When you journal a prayer it is important to pray Gods word. Find Scripture to reinforce your
faith in the area you are praying. Write the Scripture in your journal as you make your request
known to Christ. How do you enter into Gods presence?
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.
~Psalm 95:2
God wants His people to call out to Him in prayer, independently and in a unified group, in times
of need or catastrophe, and to bring needs to him as a Father. We can journal these needs for
ourselves, our children, our families, our communities, our church, our leaders at GMG, our
leaders around the world, etc.
Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me?
Jeremiah 32:27
There is great power in praying the Word and inserting someones name. For example: May
______ be strong and courageous, not afraid; not discouraged, for the Lord will be with them
wherever they go (Joshua 1:9). The Bible is God's way of communicating. It's His Word. Quoting
Scripture is a spiritual language that God understands.
Pray your Scripture with song! Choose a verse that you have been meditating on. Put it to a
melody you already know or just sing it free-form. Sing it over and over. See what kind of effect it
has on you.
Make it personal Put I and me into the Scripture. For example: Lord, You are the Good
Shepherd and I hear Your voice. The voice of a stranger I will not follow.
(John 10: 27)

We have to pray with our eyes on God, not on the difficulties. ~ Oswald Chambers
