Answer all questions

Part A - (5 x 2 = 10)
1. What is principle of superposition?
2. Define thermal stresses.
3. Find the Youngs modulus of a rod of diameter 30 mm and of length 300 mm which is
subjected to a tensile load at 60 kN and the extension of the rod is equal to 0.4 mm.
4. Define Poissons ratio.
5. Define the following terms: (i) Shear force (ii) Bending moment
Part B - (2 x 16 + 1 x 8 = 40)
6. (a) (i) A block shown in figure weighing 30kN is supported by three wires. The outer two
wires are of steel and have an area of 100 mm 2 each, where as the middle wire is of
aluminium and has an area of 200 mm2. If the elastic moduli of steel and aluminium are
200 GPa and 80 GPa respectively, then calculate the stresses in the aluminium

(ii) A rod is 2m long is at a temperature of 10C. Find the expansion of the rod, when the
temperature is raised to 80C. If this expansion is prevented, find the stresses induced in the
material of the rod. Take E = 1.0 x 105 MN/m2 and = 0.000012 / C.

7.(a) (i) A simply supported beam AB of span 8m carrying concentrated loads of 4kN, 10kN and
7kN at distances of 1.5m, 4m and 6m from the left support. Construct the S.F.and B.M.
Diagrams.

(ii) A cantilever beam AB, 2m long carries a uniformly distributed load of 1.5 kN/m over a
length of 1.6m from the free end. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the
beam.

(i) A load of 2 MN is applied on a short concrete column 500 mm x 500 mm. The column is

reinforced with four steel bars of 10mm diameter, one in each corner. Find the stresses in the
concrete and steel bars. Take E for steel as 2.1 x 105 N/mm2 and for concrete as 1.4 x 105 N/mm2.

(ii) A steel bar 50 mm x 50 mm in section is 1.2 m long. It is subjected axial pull of 200 kN.
What are the changes in length, width and volume of the bar, if the value of Poissons ratio is
0.3? Take E as 200 GPa.
