NOTES

W O R S H I P

It is not uncommon for a passage of Scripture to serve

as the textual foundation for a hymn. Psalm 103 served
as the primary course material for Praise, My Soul, the
King of Heaven. The first stanza summarizes verses
1-5 of the Psalm. The praise offered is personal. The
soul (for the Jew, that was the heart, mind, and will)
has personally been ransomed, healed, restored,
and forgiven. How can we not sing His praise? The
second verse of the hymn enlarges on the ideas
expressed in verses 6-12. The reference is to Israels
difficulties in Egypt (and to ours in this life) and their
rebellion towards God (and to ours in this life) and
Gods grace and mercy extended to His Chosen
People (and to us). The next two verses draw our
attention to something a little unusual in the Old
Testament, the idea of God as Father, rather than the
more usual King, Judge, or Creator. Here the hymn
writer uses the beautiful phrase father-like he tends
and spares us. The thirteenth verse of this psalm
is one of the most tender phrases in all of the Old
Testament. There is actually another verse to this
hymn based on verses 15-17 of the psalm, which our
hymnal has eliminated. Then the final verses of the
psalm frame the thoughts for the last verse of the
hymn. We join with the angels and all the heavenly
host in the concluding words of worship of this
glorious psalm and hymn. The book of Psalms is the
Old Testament hymnbook and is meant to be sung
and has been the backbone of worship for 3,000
years, including this morning. Join with the millions of
people that have sung them before you.

people who are going through a challenging
season of life.
These seasons range from grieving the
death of a loved one or facing an illness to
adjusting to having a newborn baby at home
or transitioning into retirement.

might become a Stephen Minister, call
Tammas Smith at 407.423.3441 x1455 or
