Remembering
Veterans

his edition of The Valleys Nickel is

dedicatedto all of of our men and
women who have served our nation
in the military. I served in the National
Guard and last month I found out I had been
reclassified to veteran status. My Father served
in World War II. Both sides of my family
served in the Civil War, one branch of the
family tree fought for the confederacy and the
other side fought for the Union.

The War in Afghanistan and the Iraq
War are ongoing. Technically, they have not
been officially declared as a war, but they sure
look like war to me and Im sure it feels that
way to everyone who has ever set foot near the
front lines. However, only history can evaluate
the relevancy and necessity of these conflicts. I
am focusing on the war of my generation, The
Vietnam War.

I originally sought service in the
National Guard as an alternative to fighting
in Vietnam. I was a photographer. Even so,
some of my unit ended up being activated and
I am sad to say that I do not know where they
ended up. But, like many of you, there were
some of my classmates who served in combat
zones, and I do know where they ended up.
They didnt all make it out alive, and this is
my tribute to them, to make sure their names
and their services dont go unnoticed as the
years carry on.

Tom Smiley was a teammate on my
high schools cross country team for Bullard
High School. He was the son of a doctor and
didnt have to go, he could have stayed in
college but he didnt he volunteered. Tom
died fighting in Vietnam.

Alan Binatena was wounded in
Vietnam. He laid on a dead pile for three days

Stay Local l Buy Local l (559) 472-7182

before anyone realized he was alive. When
he finally made it home, Alan spent a long
time recovering in a hospital in San Francisco.
Approximately five years ago he died of
meningitis. The anti-seizure medication he
took masked the symptoms of meningitis.
He was a gifted artist and his son told me he
had some of his fathers art. Once, I had asked
Alan while we were having lunch how it was
over there.His reply was simple,
You dont want to know

Max Contreras was a friend who
wrestled for McLane High School. Maxie, as
he was known, was a highly touted wrestler
and competed at the collegiate level before
going to Vietnam. He was awarded The
Bronze Star. Maxie and an officer repelled a
night attack on his base. The Viet Cong had
permeated the perimeter and cut the throats
of the American soldiers who had fallen
asleep. Max was one of the few who made it
home, he found his footing in everyday life
and became a computer consultant.

Those were my classmates, and a
friend whose story I know. There are 2 and
a half million stories of citizens who served
in Vietnam. Eleven thousand of them were
women. Over fifty eight thousand of them
died in Vietnam. Memorial day is a day of
remembrance. A day of honoring our veterans.

In closing, I hope my government
will choose their battles more wisely and take
the weight of the lives of our soldiers more
seriously, not sending them in droves overseas
without a real declaration. I also pray that my
government will spare future generations the
fog of war, for the only way to peace, is peace.

Charlie
Daniels
Entreprenuer and teacher.

ocal music isnt just confined to the

bands and artists performing at your
neighborhood venue, its also about the
music shops that are owned independently
and the faces behind them. The Central
Valley is home to a fair number
of talent, and often times there is
a combination of that talent with
entrepreneurship. Getting to know
Fresno, or any Central Valley city,
doesnt just mean getting to know whats
happening right now, it also means getting
to know yesterday, and the day before. In
other words, its history. For this issue of
The Valleys Nickel, I chose to highlight
Fresno local, Charlie Daniels. A man who
has been gifting music to Fresno natives for
nearly 30 years.

For 27 years Mr. Daniels
operated Charlie Daniels
Music just south of where
Gospel Music had been on
Blackstone, a few blocks south
of Shields. But his passion
for music didnt start there, he
had been living music his
whole life, starting from a
very young age. Charlie
Daniels family were a very
musicalbunch and he
was completely immersed
in music growing up.
His father performed
in the Chordsmen and

the Gospelaires. On weekends Charlie

accompanied his dad to gigs all over
California. At 18 he began teaching guitar
at Gospel Music in Fresno. After some time
being a teacher, Charlie decided to open
his own business, Charlie Daniels Music.
Juan Serrano, the internationally famous
flamenco guitarist, actually gave private
lessons at Daniels store for some time and
then became head of the guitar department
at Fresno State.

Eventually, spending more time with
his family became a priority for Charlie,
as well as having a desire to pursue other
interests, so he closed Charlie Daniels Music
to make room for these. However, it wasnt
long before Charlie was persuaded to work
for Sound Stage by long time manager, Jerry
Lisle. It was a good fit as Charlie continued
to sell and install PA systems for schools and
churches in the area. If youre familiar with
Sound Stage, you know that it was sold and
became what is now Legend Music, located
at the corner of Blackstone and Dakota.
Charlie not only provides his expertise in
helping others choose their next guitar, but
he also is available to teach how to play
them.

Curious about how many guitars
have passed through Charlies hands, I asked
how many of them he suppose hes found new
homes for? He replied with,
Thousands. All the top brands; Martin,
Gibson, Fender, Peavey and Ibanez.

For a guy who spent most of his life
surrounded and imbedded in to the world
of music, he must have a favorite guitarist. I
asked Charlie, who in his opinion is the best
in the world? Charlie thought long and hard
before giving his answer,
That is a difficult question because there
are so many styles of playing, but if I
had to name one it would be Doyal
Dykes.He is an amazing player.
Cited as one of the best finger style
guitarists in the world, Doyal Dykes is
mostly known for his American Country
style. Dykes lives in Cleveland, Tennessee
and is still performing around the world.

If youre thinking about learning the
guitar, refining your skills or looking for
some help in finding the right guitar for
you, Charlie Daniels can most likely help
you with that.

Charlie can be found
Monday thru Friday at Legend
Music located at Blackstone
and Dakota in Fresno. Stop in
and say Hi or even just give
him a call. He can be reached
at (559) 260-8262 or by calling

about seven years ago. It has remained one of
my go to CDs, and in all that time I havent
grown tired of it.As a matter of fact whenever
I put it on again I am amazed that it resonates
so deeply with me.

The title track,21st Century Blues is
a cascade of blues guitar with lyrics that amuse
and throw light on some of the new realities of
our world. Its lyrics are poetic and this writer
enjoys Heads use of language backed by an
edgy guitar and blues shouter voice.

Another tune that goes deep into
Heads anti war stance is Parade in the Rain. A
hauntingly beautiful ballad with an eloquent
guitar melody. By the end of the song I am
totally immersed in his emotional plea to stop
the parades of wounded soldiers. Why oh
why do we parade in the rain?

Vacation from the Blues is a jazzy
song about stopping overnight in a distant
city, and instead of sleeping. going out and

wandering about seeking companionship and

escape from the haunting midnight memories
of a lost love. Its a joyful hopeful song that
emphasizes that living and loving go on despite
our personal blues, and its better to join in the
celebration than to remain mired in the past.

Track 11 is my favorite. Titled Still
On My Mind. It explores one mans reflections
of love and how someone can still deeply love
someone who is no longer in their life. The
love song goes on in his heart even though the
relationship ended long ago.

With the power and passing that
pours out of this album, I hope this CD gets
reissued. During the original release there was
no budget for promotion. There is some world
class song writing here and if you run across
one of the extant copies, do yourself a favor
and buy it. My hopes are not entirely wishful
thinking, word on the grapevine is that there is
talk of 21st Century Blues being reissued.

The album was produced by two local
musicians, Randy Sharp, a Visalia native with
songwriting credits on Rebas and many other
hit CDs, and bass player Ray Haney. They did
an extraordinary job and I hope all blues fans
get a chance to experience some of the best of
our native sons.
