Ihaveworkedwithmanyorganizationsandfiguredoutthatthemostimportant
elementinsafetyisthecommitmentfromtopleadership,withoutleaderships
commitment,noorganizationcanachievethelevelofsafetytheydesirefor.Itgives
employeesasenseofresponsibilitywhentheyseetheirleaderpreachingand
practicingsafetyineveryaspectofbusiness.
Inanyorganization,itisalwaystheleadershipwhodrivestheculturalchangeby
inspiringandinfluencingotheremployeeswiththeiractionsandFeltLeadership.
Manyleadersshowtheircommitmentbutgetsinconflictwhenrestoftheemployees
seetheiractionsandwordsarenotaligned,insimplewords,theydonotwalkthe
talk.

Employeesatalllevelsshouldunderstandtheirroleinsafetyandparticipatein
safetyimprovementinitiatives.Leadershipshouldholdemployeesaccountablefor
nonperformanceorengaginginunsafeacts.
Allemployeesmustunderstandthattheultimategoalofimplementingsafetyrulesis
tosavelives,andattheendofthedayitisbeneficialtothem,nooneelse.Ihave
neverinmycareerseenapersonwhotellsme,tonight,Iwanttogohomewitha
brokenarm,whichmeanspeopledounderstandthatsafetyisgoodfortheirhealth
butstillneedssomeonetoreenforcerules.
4.Understand,analyzeandeliminaterisksinvolvedintheprocess,
technologyandfacility
Manyleadersaskmethisquestionouremployeeshavetherealsenseofpersonal
safety,whydotheystillgethurt?Well,ifyoureemployeesarewellcommittedto
personalsafetybutstillgettinghurt,thantheremustbesomethingwrongwiththe
process,technology,orthefacilitytheyoperatein.
ThisisoneareathatcanbeaddressedbyawellbalancedProcessSafety
Managementprogram.ManyorganizationsjustperformaHAZOPofPHAstudyand
feelstheyhavecompletedtheircomplianceobligation.ProcessSafetyismuch
broaderthanjustHAZOPorPHA.Itcontains14elementsthathelporganizations
completelyeliminatehazardsfromanyoperations,suchasPSSR,Mechanical
Integrity,IncidentInvestigation,EmergencyResponseandPlanning,Management

approachestowardssafety.Toalignyourapproachwithyourvision,youneedto
