Welcome
To make any real, lasting life change, it requires one thing and one thing only, and that is a
commitment to being intentional. Sadly, most people who struggle with addiction and life
controlling issues want to get better, they want to change, but they never seem to be able to be
intentional and take the initiative to move. I believe that, inherently, the reason why many dont
make the decision to be intentional is that because, deep down inside, they know, either
consciously or unconsciously, that to do so is going to require them to get out of their comfort
zone.
Let me repeat this just so I am clear.
Making a real, lasting, positive change in your life is going to require you to
get out of your comfort zone.
Listen, the abundant life that Jesus promised you (yes he promised you, more on that later), is
not a destination that you will get to, perhaps, someday in the great by and by. The abundant
life is what you experience when you see progress toward your goals, namely deeper
relationship with God, and freedom from the things that are negatively controlling your life.
And today, Im excited and encouraged, because youve now done what most people dont do,
and that is youve taken your first step. Congratulations. Youve now become intentional!
A Little About Me
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come
that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:10
you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. John
8:32
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:36
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Galatians 5:1
If you are reading this and you have experienced or are experiencing any of the things I
mentioned above, trust me, I understand. But know that Jesus promises are for you. And He is
for you.
Thats why I created the L.I.F.E. in 90 Program, to take everything God showed me and to put it
in easy-to-follow, easy-to-understand format so that anyone struggling with pornography, lust
and sexual addiction, can find freedom once and for all. If you would like to learn more about
this program, I have included some information below, after the 11 principles.
Ok now let me go ahead and give you my 11 principles for overcoming pornography, lust and
sexual addiction. Here we go!
Next, focus on the why of your temptations. Are you are feeling hungry, angry, lonely, or
tired? If so, remember that you need to take care of yourself first, in healthy eating, exercising
patience with yourself and others, maintaining good positive social contacts, and getting
adequate rest.
In our program, L.I.F.E. In 90, we go over these things extensively and help you really zero in on
the things that trigger you the most and help you tailor a plan that fits you perfectly. Spend
some time on this. Really take time to reflect. Dont go overboard, but dont take it lightly
either. Remember, the steps you take here are to protect you, not limit you.
And one more thing to remember. These boundaries are not necessarily permanent either. As
your desires begin to change on the inside, your need for negative boundaries will decrease. So
think of this as healthy steps to take at the beginning as the Spirit helps you gain more selfcontrol.
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each
other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous
person is powerful and effective. James 5:16
Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2
Having accountability, again, helps us quench and snuff out the flames of temptation. Why?
Because secrecy is like gasoline on a flame, whereas accountability is like pouring bucket loads
of water, putting out the fire. I have never been able to deal with temptation on a long term
basis without having a small group of very trusted individuals in my life, who help me stay
accountable to both my negative boundaries (things to avoid), and positive boundaries
(spiritual practices I need to stick to).
So take some time this week and ask some close friends, people you trust, to help hold you
accountable. Ask them if they would be willing to take a call from you in times when you are
being tempted.
So spend ample time in Gods Word daily, long before any temptation arises. Know the
promises and the truths of scripture. The next time Satan tries to tempt you with lying words or
even twisted scripture, you will not only be able to say no! but you will also have the truth of
Gods word ready and on the tip of your tongue to back it up.
So for example, if I am in the midst of being tempted and I feel like I cannot stop the behavior I
am being tempted to do, realize that it is only a feeling. It is not Truth. Why? Because Gods
Word says in Romans 6:6-7
6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that
the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should
no longer be slaves to sin 7 because anyone who has died has
been set free from sin.
Feelings do not determine Truth. Truth determines Truth. We might feel as though we cannot
stop, that we have to give in to the temptation. But the Truth says that our old self was
crucified, and that we have been freed from sin. Faith is believing that what God says is true no
matter what. So over time, as we learn to trust God, and as our faith increases, we learn to
listen to Truth in the midst of our temptations, and not to our feelings. Its in these very
moments when we choose truth over the feelings of our temptations that we move
mountains with our faith.
Bottom line is this; Temptation follows feelings. Faith follows Truth. We are free from sin.
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our
faith Hebrews 12:2
8 Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirableif
anything is excellent or praiseworthythink about such things.
Philippians 4:8
10
1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts
on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For
you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
Colossians 3:1-3
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed
by the renewing of your mind. Romans 12:2
The message is clear. Dont dwell on the temptation, dwell on Christ! Set your mind on things
above (Christ, His promises, faith, etc.), not on the things on the Earth (the things that are
tempting you and making you feel as though you have to give in). So as you seek to keep your
mind on Him, dont let go. Persevere. Hold on to them and keep holding them. How long? For
as long as it takes. I promise you, the temptation will not last forever. Over time, and with
enough time, the power behind the temptation will begin to subside.
11
Learn to treasure Christ more than you treasure pornography, lust, and sex and whatever else is
causing struggles in your life. As your passion and taste for Jesus grows, you will notice
something miraculous begin to happen on the inside of you.
God, over time, will begin to change your desire system. You will begin to no longer desire the
same things you used to desire. Why? Because your love and desire for Christ will finally grow
to be stronger than your love and desire for anything else. Make it a part of your daily prayer to
say, like the Psalmist, Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice
and be glad all our days" (Psalm 90:14).
As you begin to have real encounters with God and see His activity in your life, then you will see
your heart begin to change. You will see what Paul describes as the fruit of the Holy Spirit,
begin to happen naturally from within you. The fruit of the Holy Spirit is the fruit of your
relationship with God. It is a fruit that grows as you learn to accept the passion and love that
God has for you.
As you accept the passion and love God has for you, you will begin to notice a growing burning
passion in you, for God. And its these very holy desires that, over time, begin to grow stronger
than your desires for porn and sex. As your passion and love for God increases, so too does
your heart become free.
12
Instead of going to pornography and sex to find a mere mirage of fulfillment, learn to go on
hikes through the woods. Take up fishing, hunting, or learning a new hobby or skill. Take walks
in the park, get together with good friends and play card games, etc. Find something good to do
with your time and do it with all of your might, and have fun doing it! I wasted so much time
when I was an addict, just pursuing one fix after another.
These days, I enjoy time with my kids, reading, going camping and fishing, learning outdoor
survival techniques, hanging out with my accountability guy friends, etc. Those things bring me
joyand lifea way greater life than what my addiction used to give me.
So, the next time you are tempted, tell Satan that he has no more control over your life. Tell
him he cannot steal, kill and destroy it any longer. Why? Because from now on, you plan to live
it!
13
discovered the 11 principles that you read above over a period of 15 years as I struggled in
an agonizing, life-destroying addiction to pornography and lust. It was not until God had
taken me through some intense, eye opening, and painful life experiences that the
11 Principles finally began to set my heart free from addiction.
If you are at all like me, and youve struggled with pornography and sexual addiction, then you
have a gut feeling that knows that sticking to principlesconsistentlycan seem almost
impossible.
Perhaps you are like I was 7 years ago. I was rock at rock bottom and sick of tired of being sick
and tired. I had tried everything I knew to do to be set free from pornography. And as a
Christian, the shame and guilt I felt threatened to overwhelm me. It seemed Satan had a
foothold in every area of my life.
I had gone to all the 12-step groups, been to counseling,
went to church, read my Bible, prayed, fasted, gotten on
various medications, practiced spiritual disciplines, went
to pastors, doctors and specialists, and in the end I could
never seem to live free from my addiction.
I had lost jobs, and my habit was causing me to spiral into
debt. My health was going down. I had pushed away most
of the people I loved, and some of my relationships with
family and friends had even ended. My marriage too, was
nearly over. And I was starting to get into legal troubles.
I knew that my life was spinning out of control, and I knew something had to change, and
change soonor Id be dead.
I felt alone. I felt hopeless. I wondered if I was even saved, if God really loved me. Or if I could
even change.
All this to say, if you know deep down inside that you struggle with pornography, lust, or sexual
addiction of any kind, and you want it to stop, then youre going to need help.
Because although freedom is promised to us as Christians, there is one thing I know for sure.
It cannot be achieved alone.
14
Many of my friends have gone down the road of trying to go at it alone and Ive watched in gutwrenching agony as they lost everythingtheir spouses, children, friends, finances, hopes, and
dreams, their healthand with some of them, even their lives.
But what if there was a better way?
What if we CAN be set free from the sinful patterns of addiction? What if we can actually live
the abundant life that Jesus said he came to give us, not sober from addiction, but completely
FREE from it?
