a one-time grant from the
NEA for the purpose of
finding, educating, and
creating a very small cadre
of IEA Qualified
Bargainers.

9:15 AM to 9:45 AM

If you are interested and


selected to participate, you
will be provided with the
most extensive collective
bargaining training and
education the IEA has ever
offered. Upon successful
completion, you will be
designated an IEA
Qualified Bargainer,
signifying that you have
completed the training and
are fully qualified to advise
and lead and/or assist a
successful negotiations
team.

communicate these interests, while implementing
traditional and non-traditional styles of bargaining

Determine the best type of data needed to
change the attitude of the school district

Work with financial facts and not a crystal

IEA/NEA continues to organize

qualification will be valuable when
supporting the expertise of a
UniServ Director. In addition, you
will have expert knowledge and
excellent communication skills
that can be utilized in order to
strengthen your local.

What the
Bargaining
Institute is about
In order to empower members, an IEA
Qualified Bargainer will have a wealth of
knowledge and have expertise in all aspects
of bargaining, including best practice.
UniServ Directors, affected by the creation
of a new local in their work assignment, will
be able to request an IEA Qualified
Bargainer to assist with bargaining in any
local. If selected, an IEA Qualified
Bargainer will receive a stipend.

How well you do in bargaining has more to


do with how much power you have rather
than your negotiating skills. The most
experienced bargainer cannot get a good
agreement if the union has no power.
Start preparing long before negotiations
begins
Build leverage / power / strength
Have a unified bargaining team
Understand the other side
Know technical aspects of bargaining
Be skilled in communicating across the
table
Set framework for bargaining sessions
Have techniques for reaching agreements
