Roman Catholic Cathedral is the second (after St. Alexander church) Ro-
man Catholic cathedral built in Kyiv. It was constructed in the beginning
of 20th century in a Gothic style featuring two 60 metre towers. Today
the Cathedral is shared by the Kyiv Latin Rite Catholic community and
the National House of Organ and Chamber Music of Ukraine and holds
concerts regularly.

foundation in 1015 and through subsequent centuries the cave monas-
tery was widely regarded as the historical centre of the Eastern Orthodox
Christianity in Eastern Europe. During the Soviet antireligious campaign
of the 1920s the Lavra was converted into museum, still after collapse of
the Soviet rule the jurisdiction over the site is divided between the state
museum, and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The museum is also in-
scribed as a World Heritage Site. The original Lavra cavern comprise a
complex system of narrow underground corridors along with numerous
living quarters and underground chapels.

thedral was built in 1037 and rebuilt in 1740 to its present look (a minor
modification of cathedral cupolas). The original Saint Sophia Cathedral
table model is exhibited in the central part of the cathedral. After the Rus-
sian Revolution of 1917 and during the Soviet antireligious campaign of
the 1920s, the government plan called for destruction of the 11th century
cathedral and transformation of the grounds into a park “Heroes of Pere-
kop” (after a Red Army victory in the Russian Civil War in Crimea). The
cathedral was saved from destruction with the effort of many scientists and
historians. Nevertheless, in 1934, Soviet authorities confiscated the struc-
ture from the church, including the surrounding seventeenth–eighteenth
century architectural complex and designated it as an architectural and
historical museum. The bell tower of the museum complex is open to public
with its 42 meters high 4th level view point to enjoy Kyiv bird’s eye panorama.
ST. VOLODYMYR CATHEDRAL
5a Tarasa Shevchenka Blvd. Universytet. Located centrally, St. Volo-
dymyr’s Cathedral is the mother church of Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
The church was built in 1882 to commemorate the 900th anniversary of
the baptism of Kyivan Rus by prince Volodymyr the Great of Kyiv (St.
Vladimir). The church feature traditional Byzantine architecture with six-
piered, three-apsed crowned by seven cupolas temple with colourful inte-
rior that particularly strikes the eye.

Museums & Landmarks

ANDRIYIVSKYI DESCENT (Andriyivskyi Uzviz Street)
Andiyivskyi Descent is one of the best known historic streets and a major
tourist attraction in Kyiv. The descent connects Upper Town and hisorical
merchant Podil quarter. The street is lined with museums, souvenir sellers,
galleries, restaurants. By way down there are St. Andrew’s Church, the
Castle of Richard Lionheart, Mikhail Bulgakov’s museum, the One Street
museum, and numerous other sights and monuments.
THE GOLDEN GATE OF KYIV (Zoloti Vorota)
40A Volodymyrska str, Zoloti Vorota. The Golden Gate was once a gate-
way in the ancient city walls of Kyiv. The gateway was constructed by
Yaroslav the Wise, Prince of Kyiv, in the 11th century. During subsequent
centuries the gate remained the entrance to the city although it fell into ru-
ins. In 1982, the Gate reconstructed to the 1500th anniversary of the city.
INDEPENDENCE SQUARE & KHRESCHATYK STREET
The central Independence Square (aka Maidan Nezalezhnosti) is well
known throughout the world as the place where supporters of Yuschenko
and the Orange Revolution camped for weeks on end in October 2004.
Throughout its history Independence Square was renamed six times.
Khreschatyk, in its turn, is the main street of Kyiv. The entire street was
completely destroyed during WWII by the retreating Red Army and rebuilt
in the neoclassical style of post-war Stalinist architecture. Today, the street
is the administrative and business centre of the capital, as well as a popu-
lar place for Kyivans and guests of the capital. During weekends and pub-
lic holidays, Khreschatyk is a car free zone and reserved for pedestrians.
Among points of interest situated along the street there are 50 metre Peo-
ple’s Friendship Arch dedicated to the unification of Russia and Ukraine
(called the people’s yoke by locals), 19th century National Philharmonic
building, National Musical Academy Concert Hall, City Council Building,
Kyiv Passage, Central Department Store, the 19th century Bessarabsky
Indoor Market and Bessarabsky Quarter.
