2. GLOBAL TRADE - KEY FINDINGS

Belgium dominates in the global sawnwood trade. In 2014, Belgium exported
23.2 thousand tonnes of sawnwood totaling 43.7 million USD, 4% over the
previous year. Its primary trading partner was the Netherlands, where it
supplied 43.3 % of its total sawnwood exports in value terms, accounting for
55.0% of the Netherlands total imports.
Overall, the global sawnwood trade reached to 216 million USD, with a CAGR of
17.7% from 2007 to 2014. In physical terms, it showed steady growth, rising
from 20 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 320 thousand tonnes in 2014.
In 2014, China (12.4%), the United Kingdom (19.7%), Belgium (11.9%), the
U.S. (9.8%) and the Netherlands (10.1%) were the leading destinations of
sawnwood imports, together making up 63.8 % of global imports. The share of
the United Kingdom increased significantly (+20 percentage points), while the
share of the U.S. illustrated negative dynamics (-4 percentage points).
Belgium and Germany were among the other main global suppliers of
sawnwood in 2014 with a combined share of 28.0 % of global exports.
However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were the
Netherlands (+30.7% per year) and the U.S. (+12.1% per year). Germany
significantly dropped its position in the global export structure, from 33% in
2007 to 8% in 2014.
