Name of the Teacher: LEKSHMI SHAJI

Standard: IX

Name of the Subject: Mathematics

Duration: 45min

Name of the school: Govt.H.S.S Koickal

Unit

: Area

Topic

: Rectangle and Triangle

CURRICULAR STATEMENT:
The students develops different dimension of knowledge about the relation
between area of rectangle and area of triangle. {Which is inserted inside rectangle?}
CONTENT ANALYSIS:
TERMS: Rectangle, Triangle, Area.
CONCEPT: Area of triangle is half the area of the rectangle in which it is inserted.
FACTS:
Area of triangle which Height h and Base b is l/2bh Squints.
Area of rectangle with Length l and Breadth b is lb Squints.
In a rectangle, a point on its side is joined to the vertices on the opposite side to form a
triangle.
Principle: Area of a triangle inside the rectangle is half the area of the rectangle.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The students will be able to;
Recall knowledge related to triangles, rectangles, area of triangle and rectangle.
Recognize that the area of a triangle which lies inside the rectangle is half the area of the rectangle.
Compare the area of triangle and rectangle.
Apply the above concept in different situation.
Organise different elements fit in a situations.
Judge the appropriates of the above concept in a given problem.
Perform arithmetic and geometric skill.
Accept the beauty of mathematical principles.
Pre- requisites: Area of a rectangle, triangle and mathematical calculations.
Learning Aids: Chart.

TEACHER - PUPIL INTERACTION

Teacher: Today, we are going to learn in a different method. Ok?
Pupil: OK
Teacher: Suppose we have got a garden in our school and if its condition is not that
Good.....Like.....can you just imagine?
Pupil: Yes madam.....looking good flowers, dry laws, not well organized.
Teacher: Yes, but if we create a point inside the garden and lawn is made creatively it can be
compensated. What is your opinion?
Pupil: Thats true.
Teacher: Do you have any idea.....i mean about the shape of the pond?
Pupil: Can we create a circular pond near the garden?
Teacher: Yes, we can.....but it will look more catching if its a triangular pond......right?
Pupil: yeah.....can we make it outside the garden?
Teacher: Of course. What about creating inside? It will look more beautiful. What do you
say?
Teacher: I have brought a rough sketch of a garden.

Teacher: Can you identify the shape of the garden?

Pupil: Yes, its a rectangle.
Teacher: Good.
{Teacher now divided pupils into groups and asks each group to draw rough sketch of the garden
and plot the triangular pond in the sketch according to their creativity}
The figure drawn by the students from different groups are as below.

Group 1

Group 2

Group 3

{Teacher now checks the activity done by different groups}

Teacher: I like your ideas. But it will look more pleasure if its constructed at the centres of the
garden utilizing only half the area of the rectangular plot.
Pupil: {group:2} by drawing a diagonal the plot splits into 2. Each with same area and it will be half
the area of the rectangle.
Teacher: Thats true but we need to construct it almost in the center of the plot to be more
attractive. So, do you have any idea?
{Pupil thinks}
Pupil: No, idea
Teacher: lets do an activity, draw a rectangle ABCD with Length 6cm and Breadth 4cm. Then mark a
Point E at the midpoint of CD and joint EA and EB. Now draw a perpendicular from E
Towards AB.
Pupil does the same
Teacher: What is the area of a rectangle?
Pupil: 24 Sqcm
Teacher: What is the area of a triangle?
Pupil: 12 Sqcm
Teacher: Area of triangle is half that of the rectangle right. But to make it clear you can check it with
Different lengths.
{Pupil check it with different measures}
Pupil: So, if we find the midpoint of one edge of the garden and join it with the other 2 vertices on
The opposite edge of the garden we will get our required triangular pond.
Teacher: Yes, So. What can you conclude from this?
Pupil: Area of triangle is half the area of the rectangle in which the triangle is inserted.
3

Teacher: If ABCD is the rectangle and AED is the triangle. How can you state the relation connected t
Their areas?

E
D

Pupil: Area of rectangle ABCD is half the area of the triangle AEB
