IMPORTANCE AND ORGANIZATION OF SCIENCE LABORATORY

The new approach to science education gives prominence to the process of

acquiring knowledge. Since science is an activity oriented subject, a separate
specially arranged place is needed in higher classes for conducting the activities.
A school laboratory is essential to transact science in the activity based method.
There are few things to be remembered while organizing a science laboratory.
They are:
Make a list to be taken care of when equipping a Science
Laboratory.
Make a list of apparatus and chemicals needed.
It is good to have enough apparatus proportionate to the
number of students.
Glass apparatus need to be kept safely in separate
almirahs.
Arrange the chemicals in their alphabetical order.
Bottles must be labeled clearly.
After use apparatus must be cleaned and kept back in their
respective places.
The wall of the laboratory can be decorated with pictures
of scientists and diagrams of apparatus.

Useless substances, broken glass, chemicals, solid waste,

etc must be deposited in a separate basket.
A basket full of water must be kept not only when
experiments are being done but always.

ACCIDENTS AND FIRST AID

Accident may happen in the laboratory. So it is necessary to keep a first aid
kit. Possible accidents and their remedies in the laboratory are,
Wounds

: apply cotton dipped in tincture iodine.

Burns from fire

: cover the portion with linen dipped in Vaseline.

Burns from acids

: wash with plenty of water and then with sodium

bicarbonate solution.

Burns from alkalis

: wash with plenty of water and then with weak vinegar

or lime juice.

Burns from phosphorous : wash with water and then cover with cotton dipped in
silver nitrate.

Injuries to eye

: seek the help of a doctor as soon as possible.

Electric shock

: Switch off the electrical supply. Beat with a wooden

stick, admit to a hospital.

A first aid kit must contain the following:Rectified spirit, scissors, dressing gauze, linen, forceps,
bandages, plucker, eye dropper, plaster, glycerin, tincture iodine, acetic acid 1%,
sodium bicarbonate, milk of magnesia, carbolic acid and Vaseline.
The list of apparatus and chemical to be purchased must be
prepared with the details of the experiment to be performed by the pupils and
demonstrated by the teacher. It is better to buy a few additional articles to guard
against breakages. The list of apparatus may be divided into essentials and
desirable.

REGISTERS IN THE LABORATORY

Once the apparatus is received, the articles should be
properly checked and entered in the stock register at the same time. The types of
registers to be maintained are: Permanent stock register: which contains details of articles which are not
liable to broken or consumed.
Breakable stock register : It includes articles of glassware, flasks, test
tubes, beakers, watch glass, funnel, burettes etc.

Consumable stock register: It includes chemicals and other fluids liable to

be consumed.
Order register
: It includes the record of the order sent for the
purchase of new apparatus.
Requirement register
: This includes items required. For this priority
should be given to those of immediate need.
