STRATEGIC PLAN & IMPLEMENTATION MAP

2013-2016
School Vision
Every student achieves his/her greatest potential through cooperation and
collaboration among school staff, families, and community and builds a solid
foundation for future success in a complex society.
School Mission
We are committed to educating the whole child by ensuring positive and
diverse learning experiences in a safe and nurturing environment that
promotes a passion for life-long learning, respect for self and others, and an
appreciation for individual differences.
School Beliefs
At Knotts Island Elementary School, we believe in the following ideas:
Student learning is the chief priority of the school.
A safe and secure learning environment contributes to academic and
personal success.
A variety of instructional approaches should be utilized to support
student learning.
The use of current student data is necessary to assess student
performance and meet the learning needs of each student.
A learning environment is provided where all students are actively
engaged in the learning process.
Professional learning communities are established where school staff,
parents, and the community share the responsibility for advancing the
schools mission.
Professional development for staff is necessary in order to enhance
student learning.
Students should be encouraged to participate in regular physical activity
and healthy eating habits to help enhance learning potential.

Transforming Initiative 1: Implement instructional lessons and activities
that enhance student learning through problem-based/project-based learning,
utilization of critical thinking skills, and the integration of 21st Century skills
into instructional practices.
The instructional model of passively learning facts and reciting them out of context is no
longer sufficient to prepare student to survive in todays world. Solving highly complex
problems requires that students have both fundament skills (reading, writing, and math) and
21st Century skills (teamwork, problem solving, research gathering, time management,
information synthesizing, and utilizing technology tools). With this combination of skills,
students become directors and managers of their learning process, guided and mentored by
skilled teachers.

Transforming Initiative 2: Establish processes or procedures for setting

expectations and problem solving for increased student achievement.
In schools with higher levels of student achievement, the school is aligned
with and supportive of non-negotiable goals and expectations (for instruction
and behavior) and use data in an ongoing problem-solving process to improve
student achievement and instruction. Progress towards these goals is
continually monitored and is the driving force behind the schools actions.
