Keith Iyeh A. Gersalina

Introduction:
I was born in Tubod, Minglanilla Cebu City, where i
lived the most of my life, benefiting from a warm
and supporting family, and a province which provide
me with a sound education and opportunities for
personal growth.

Since my earliest school days i have been interested


in the pursuit of knowledge and truth, a search
which was inspired by my parents and enhanced by
my teachers.This has stayed with me into adult life,
and i know find myself realizing the importance and
beauty of such ideas and principles.

INTRODUCTION

Navigation-is

a field of study that focuses on the process of monitoring

and controlling the movement of a craft or vehicle from one place to another.

The field of navigation includes four general categories: land navigation,

marine navigation, aeronautic navigation, and space navigation.

Celestial navigation-also

known as astronavigation, is the ancient art and

science of position fixing that enables a navigator to transition through a


space without having to rely on estimated calculations, or dead reckoning, to
know their position. Celestial navigation uses "sights," or angular measurements
taken between a celestial body (the sun, the moon, a planet or a star) and the
visible horizon. The sun is most commonly used, but navigators can also use
the moon, a planet or one of 57 navigational stars whose coordinates are
tabulated in the Nautical Almanac and Air Almanacs.

The Nautical Almanac contains tabulations of the Sun, Moon, navigational


planets and stars for use in the determination of position at sea from sextant
observations. In addition, it gives times of sunrise, sunset, twilights, moonrise
and moonset, phases of the Moon and eclipses of the Sun and Moon for use in
the planning of observations. All the necessary interpolation and altitude
correction tables are provided as well as pole star tables and diagrams and
notes for the identification of stars and planets. Information on standard
times for most countries around the world is provided. A concise set sight
reduction tables and sight reduction form are also included .

CHAPTER 1 LEARNINGS

I learn that Polaris is a star close to the North Pole; it circles


around the pole at a distance or radius of 1.

In the Nautical

Almanac, the correction is tabulated in three quantities, a0 , a1


and a2 . They contain a constant that will give a positive value in
all cases; the sum of the constants is 1. In finding the LHA if it
is west it is minus and if it east it is plus.

CHAPTER 2 LEARNINGS

I learn that to Determining the latitude of a location from a


meridian observation of the sun is among the simplest celestial
observations to take and to calculate and Observed altitude, This
is the angle in degrees above the horizon that an observer
instrumentally measures for a celestial body. With the sextant the
captains usually measured the sun's upper limb; with the octant, its
lower limb.

CHAPTER 3 LEARNINGS

I learn that You have to use the pole star method


solving in order to get the azimuth and intercept. I
learn that in plotting the azimuth is used as a
course and the intercept is used as an speed/knots.

CHAPTER 4 LEARNINGS
I learn that
An outline chart, devoid of hydrographic information, of a spec

ific scale and projection, usuallyportraying a graticule and com


pass rose, designed to be ancillary to standard nautical charts,
and produced either as an individual chart or a part of a coord
inated series and it is process to know what latitude and
longitude are you staying.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

In this semester my knowledge in navigation is now fully


develop, i gain many techniques on how problems can be
solve by the correct solutions. Also my plotting skills also
develop.
