Kris Trevorrow is the math specialist at Thurmont Primary School
in Thurmont, Maryland. She is in charge of testing students that may
need math interventions or fall under tier 2 or 3 RTII. I was able to
observe Ms. Trevorrow administer a diagnostic test. She was working
with a first grader that was in her targeted math group last year.
Targeted Math is a Tier two intervention. It is an after school program
that focuses on math activities to help kids get back to grade level.
Mrs. Trevorrow administered this diagnostic test to the student
around 10:15am. Mrs. Trevorrow asked the student if I could sit in the
test. She told him, You are going to show Miss Locke how hard and
how much you know about math today. Mrs. Trevorrow administered
the test in the back of her empty room. They sat at the semicircle
table. Mrs. Trevorrow sat in behind the table and the student sat on the
end. She set up the flipbook assessment in front of the student. Her
materials were to the side of her, and her computer was in front of her
so that she could record the students answer.
Fredrick County Public Schools uses TEAM by McGraw Hill to
assess their targeted math students. TEAM is a Direct Instruction
assessment. Direct Instruction means, everything is written out for the
teacher, Figure 1. As the student would answer Mrs. Trevorrow would
record the answer on the computer. She records if the student
answered the question correct, incorrect, or if the student did not
respond. They also have to report the strategies the students used. If
the students used the manipulatives, if the students counted on their
hands, etc. Mrs. Trevorrow often asked the student, did you use any
math strategies when you figured out the problem. So she could
record it. An example of the teachers computer screen during the
assessment could be found in figure 2.
After she was complete with the assessment she walked him
back to the room. When she came back she printed out the student
report. This showed that the student she was working with had a math
level below kindergarten, and he was in first grade. The results were
also broken down into categories, so that teachers can see what the
student really struggled in. Figure 3. Online it will also use the
students score and it will give recommendations on how they can help
boost the student knowledge. They give recommended lessons and
activities that the student can use to score better.
Mrs. Trevorrow, will also administer TEAM to the student again
throughout the year to see if the student has mastered the standards
he was lacking. They are also looking to see if the student has made

improvements in areas that he was behind. The ultimate goal is to get

the student on grade level, and no longer in targeted math.
